3 ACTIVITIES AHEAD IN OUR PARISH EVANGELIZATION TEAM is collecting personal care items for the Watertown Urban Mission. Items needed are toilet tissue, shampoo, soap, dish liquid, laundry detergent, razors, toothpaste, tooth brushes and deodorant. These items can not be purchased with public assistance vouchers. Please put your donations in the baskets inside the doors of the Church. CONFIRMATION YEAR II class will meet Sunday, September 30th, 11AM-2PM in the church for Mass and then the Greystone Building. OUR PARISH NURSES will be in the Gathering Area of the Church the first weekend of October to take your blood pressure. Stop by and have yours checked. This is a very important Ministry that is offered to us. PLANNED GIVING: Capital Campaign When you are prayerfully considering your gift for the It s Our Church, It s Our Future Capital Campaign, there will be a variety of giving options for you to think about. There is a pledge option of up to four years with payments ranging from monthly, quarterly, semiannually or annually. A one-time gift option is also available. As you reflect upon your level of support, please remember that the 2018 Bishop s Fund Appeal is included in this gift. The Bishop s Fund Appeal will return in September 2019 to provide its support to the annual ministries and program needs of the Diocese. LaValley, Sunday, September 30th, 2:00PM at St. Peter s Church, 114 Cornelia St., Plattsburgh. The Blue Mass is the Church s way to offer thanks to God for the dedication and sacrifices made by the women and men in Law Enforcement./Corrections and to pray for their safety. ROSARY CRUSADE You are cordially invited to the 4th Annual Citywide Family Rosary Crusade sponsored by the Watertown Curia Legion of Mary at St. Patrick s Church in Watertown, on Tuesday, October 9th. The Crusade begins with celebration of Mass at 5:15PM, followed by all four Mysteries of the Rosary. The theme is Mary s Immaculate Heart Will Conquer. 4 Note From the Pope, After an exhausting day, the pope met with Sicilian youth in a central square in Palermo. When he came down from the popemobile, this young woman hugged him, as a representation of a hug from everyone. Then, three young people greeted him on behalf of everyone and asked him questions. How can a young man or woman of our time hear the voice of the Lord?" How does God want us to live in our land as young people? In an intense speech, the pope asked them not to be carried away by pessimism, and not to be afraid to be personally involved in the construction of the future of their land and of the Church. Therefore, he explained that in order to know God, one must decide to be generous with people. POPE FRANCIS How do you listen to God? Where does the Lord speak? Do you have His phone number to call Him? The Lord cannot be heard sitting on the couch. Do you understand? 'Sitting, in a comfortable life, doing nothing, but I want to listen to the Lord.' I assure you, that you will hear everything else, except the Lord. Dream big, dream big with big dreams. In those dreams you will find many, many words from the Lord, who is saying something to you." Using an example from Spanish literature, he told them that it is better to be good idealists like Don Quixote, than lazy and unrealistic like Sancho Panza. POPE FRANCIS "Jesus does not want you to stay on the bench, he asks you to go out into the world. He does not want you behind the scenes, spying on others, or in the audience commenting on the play. He wants you in the scene. Jump into the game! Are you afraid of making a fool of yourself? Mess up; have patience. We have all done it many times. Embarrassing yourself is not a drama. What is drama is not doing anything. Now that is a drama! It's a drama that you do not take risks in your life. He concluded asking them to be people who build bridges in a society that is composed of wars and confrontation. Pope Francis told them that being at the service of others changes the world. POPE FRANCIS No to resignation. Everything can change. 'But father, where should I call to change everything?' Call your heart, your dreams, your capacity as a man or woman to bear fruit, to generate. In the same way you will generate a son or daughter tomorrow; create a new civilization, a welcoming civilization, a fraternal civilization, a civilization of love. Everything can change. Our goal is $ Note From the Pastor, I had discussed with everyone the three projects which we had decided would be our goals here at Holy Family for the IT S OUR CHURCH ITS OUR FUTURE Capital Campaign. Our first project was purchasing the lot at the corner of Winthrop and State Streets to improve parking. That has become extraordinarily expensive, so I suggest we plan on air-conditioning the church instead, something we will all benefit from especially as our summers continue to be so much warmer. Those who do not want us to lose the opportunity to purchase the lot should understand it is only of value to us. It is not valuable to anyone but us. So you might ask how can I make that statement? Twice I have been contacted by developers wanting to buy our parking lot because the lot on it s own is to small. I was even offered $100,000. for the parking lot and that is all the corner is worth. The owner has other ideas. On Monday, September 24th, the four parishes of Watertown follow the Holy Fathers call for a day of Prayer for Healing for the victims of clerical abuse. This will take place at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church. There will be a Holy Hour from 5:30 until 6:30. A mass will follow at which I will preside and preach. I have spoken with victims of abuse. Their stories are heart breaking. They need to know that we care and are doing everything in our power to prevent this in the future. I encourage you to lend your prayerful support to this effort. Some may be tempted to leave the church. I would encourage them to instead lead the church to a better safer and more supportive organization for all who suffer unnecessarily in so many ways. Fr. Steven Murray

6 SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 23:TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Readings: Wis 2:12, 17-20/Jas 3:16 4:3/Mk 9:30-37 The apostles argue about who is the greatest. They are looking for places of honor. They are looking to see what they are going to get out of following Jesus. But Jesus teaches them that this is not to be the way with them. Paradoxically, it is when they stop worrying about what they can get out of it, and rather focus on taking care of and providing for the least in their midst that they will receive the most: they will receive God himself. Can we humble ourselves and reach out to the least in our midst: those who are alone, those who do not fit our picture of "a good Catholic", and those who need, more than anything, someone who will listen to their story and help them to come to know Jesus. Can we be humble and vulnerable as a child and simply be present to them? ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP: Fashion is an industry that harms the environment especially Fast Fashion which is clothing that is produced quickly and inexpensive. Items of clothing thrown away are filling up landfills at an alarming rate of 12.8 million tons of textile. Repurposing clothing you have outgrown can give others less fortunate something to wear. Works of love directed to one's neighbor are the most perfect external manifestation of the interior grace of the Spirit. Pope Francis
