4 Note From the Pope, In his daily homily at Santa Marta, the pope explained that the Guardian Angel is like a compass to guide one's journey in life. He said they push the lazy to get on the road, correct those who make mistakes and takes them out of the dead ends where they live trapped. POPE FRANCIS The angel is the daily gateway to transcendence, to the encounter with the Father: that is, the angel helps me to go forward because he looks upon the Father, and he knows the way. Pope Francis said that the guardian angels are companions, protectors, to whom every Christian should turn to frequently. EXTRACTS OF PAPAL HOMILY There is the danger of not going on the journey. And how many people settle down, and don t set out on the journey, and their whole life is stalled, without moving, without doing anything It is a danger. Like that man in the Gospel who was afraid to invest the talent. He buried it, and [said] 'I am at peace, I am calm. I can t make a mistake. So I won t take a risk.' And so many people don t know how to make the journey, or are afraid of taking risks, and they are stalled. But we know that the rule is that those who are stalled in life end up corrupted. Like water: when the water is stopped up in a place, the mosquitoes come, they lay their eggs, and everything is corrupted. Everything. The angels help us, they push us to continue on the journey. And the Lord says, 'Have respect for their presence.' The angel is authoritative; he has authority to guide us. Listen to him. 'Hearken to his voice, and do not rebel against him.' Listen to the inspirations, which are always from the Holy Spirit but the angel inspires them. But I want to ask you a question: Do you speak with your angel? Do you know the name of your angel? Do you listen to your angel? Do you allow yourself to be led by hand along the path, or do you need to be pushed to move? Our angel is not only with us; he also sees God the Father. He is in relationship with Him. He is the daily bridge, from the moment we arise to the moment we go to bed. He accompanies us and is a link between us and God the Father. The angel is the daily gateway to transcendence, to the encounter with the Father: that is, the angel helps me to go forward because he looks upon the Father, and he knows the way. Let us not forget these companions along the journey. CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE Total Pledges and One Time Gifts $404,000. Total Participating Households 157 Let s keep up the good work! Our goal is $ OUR TITHING PARISH Month of September Electronic Giving $3, Pennies From Heaven Critical Needs 299 Food Pantry 100 This Year $ 42, (5 weeks) Last Year $ 37, Thank you for your continued generosity! Note From the Pastor, What happened to the old school garage next to the play ground? Jake Johnson approached me because he wanted to purchase the garage and some property from the Church to provide parking for his State Street Market on the corner of State and Winthrop streets. I explained I could not sell church property but we might talk about leasing it. Jake has removed the building and prepared the lot for paving and when it is finished it will provide up to 30 additional parking places which we will also be able to use. Looks to me like a win win for the parish. The old garage was just a catch-all for junk and was in need of repair. I would be interested in your thoughts. The Parish Council thought it was certainly a good deal. I received two quotes for a new phone system for the rectory; one was almost six thousand dollars the other was almost ten thousand dollars. Of course we would purchase the less expensive system. The current system is over 20 years old, but the problem is we do not have the money. Nor do we have the money to pay an insurance bill that is over twelve thousand dollars. I just thought you ought to know what is going on; sharing my headaches with you. Please consider the notion of each day doing at least one holy moment where you allow your patience and generosity to be evident to your friends and family, or perhaps your coworker's. It could even be to those who assist you at the grocery store. Think about doing even more than once a day. Fr. Steven Murray Pornography After listening to Matt Fradd s Augustine Institutes CD Protecting Innocence, I am convinced that as parents you need to be aware of the very real danger posed by the availability of porn for children and young people. Did you know that the average age a child is exposed to porn is 8? The best filter for the protection of our children is Covenant Eyes. I suggest you investigate it and install it on your computers ASAP. Porn is very detrimental to everyone. For more information, google Matt Fradd, and his blog Integrity Restored. He also wrote a book explaining the danger called: The Porn Myth. I had no idea what was happening and how addictive pornography is.

He is our compassionate high priest (2) in whom we have placed our hope (Ps). Lucile Nadelen Richard Rick Martin, Jr. ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP: Respect life calls us to treat the earth as if your life depends upon it, because it does! (Genesis 2:15) Pope Francis calls us to show mercy not only to each other but to the earth. A true ecological approach always becomes a social approach so as to hear BOTH the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor. (Laudato Si On Care for Our Common Home. #49) How do you see these connected in your life? What is one act you could do this week to respect life?

6 October 2018 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: The weekend of October our diocesan family joins Catholics across the globe in celebrating World Mission Sunday. We join our sisters and brothers around the world who will gather at the Lord s Table to celebrate our common vocation as missionaries. In his message for this year s celebration, Pope Francis tells us that life is a mission and he reminds us that each one of us is called to reflect on this fact: I am a mission on this earth; that is the reason why I am here in this world. (Evangelii Gaudium, 273) I invite all of us to see World Mission Sunday as a special moment to live out the mission we share as God s children, the mission to bring the Gospel to the whole world. I encourage you to be a voice for mission through your prayers and through the help that you are able to offer in support of the priests, deacons, consecrated religious and lay pastoral leaders who work tirelessly, proclaiming the Gospel, building the Church, and serving the poor in more than 1,100 mission dioceses in Asia and Africa, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe. The prayers and material aid generously given to the collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith on World Mission Sunday, the Pope tells us, continue to support the preaching of the Gospel to every nation, thus contributing to the human and cultural growth of all those who thirst for knowledge of the truth. Mission revitalizes faith, St. Pope John Paul II wrote in Redemptoris Missio (#2). May your commitment to the Lord s continuing mission renew your faith and be a blessing in your life. God bless you for responding generously to this special appeal for the missions. Gratefully yours in Christ, A short summary about the CD Reaching Out to Todays Culture In this highly relevant talk, Fr. Robert Barron shares observations from his dialogue with critics of his You Tube videos. He eloquently illustrates how well equipped our Catholic intellectual tradition is to access and clarify the confusion that is so prevalent in our culture about matters of Christian faith and life. Parishioner Comments: Most Reverend Terry R. LaValley Bishop of Ogdensburg Fr. Barron s four points to engage those who want to challenge our Catholic Faith provide sound advice and guidance. Charlie-Greensboro, NC This CD is awesome! I wish every pastor and every catechist could listen to this. We all need to understand this dynamic so we can be better evangelists! Sue-Doylestown, PA SUNDAY OCTOBER 14: TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Readings: Wis 7:7-11/Heb 4:12-13/Mk 10:17-30 or 10:17-27 What is it that keeps us from following Jesus more fully? The rich man was attached to his wealth and position. He placed his security in his possessions. In our day we place a great deal of value on our independence. We have our plans and ideas, our retirement funds and our bank accounts, our houses and even our relationships which we often place ahead of our relationship with Jesus. Yet everything we have is a gift from God. Is there something that Jesus is calling you to let go of so that you can more freely follow him? Perhaps it is some material thing, perhaps it is something else you have been holding on to, like a grudge or resentment. What is it that Jesus is asking you to surrender?
