May 6: SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Readings: Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48/1 Jn 4:7-10/Jn 15:9-17 Love one another. Love is not the warm fuzzy feeling but the gift of self to others. As Jesus has loved us, by his total self-gift, so we are to love others. This is our mission, this is what our Lord commands. Love one another. It is through this love that we will bear fruit and others will come to follow, for love knows no bounds. Everyone is welcome. May 10: THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD (Solemnity) Readings: Acts 1:1-11/ Eph 1:17-23 or Eph 4:1-13 or 4:1-7, 11-13/Mk 16:15-20 Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved. Whoever does not believe will be condemned. This is the urgency of the gospel. It isn't just a nice bit of knowledge or gee, wouldn't it be nice if we all believed. It is all about our salvation. It is all about eternal life with Jesus and to never be separated from him who is life. For without him, we have no life in us. But we do not have to share the good news on our own. We have the Holy Spirit to give us the words and the inspiration that others may come to know him and be saved by through faith. ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE OUR PARISH PILGRIMAGE TO ST. 4 Note From the Pope, The pope arrived in Molfetta by helicopter. He then started his tour in the popemobile, greeting the thousands of people who were waiting for him on the promenade. Pope Francis celebrated Mass in this city, where Tonino Bello was bishop. In his homily, the pope reflected on two fundamental elements of the Christian life: the Bread and the Word. POPE FRANCIS He is Bread broken for us and he who receives it in turn, becomes broken bread. They do not become inflated with pride, but give themselves to others. They stop living for themselves, for their own success, to have something or to become someone. They live for Jesus and like Jesus, meaning for the others. Living for others is the mark of those who eat this Bread, the 'trademark' of the Christian. The pope quoted Tonino Bello, the so-called "bishop of the poor," on several occasions. He had said the Eucharist without charity is "an incomplete sacrament." That is why Pope Francis asked this question. POPE FRANCIS We can ask ourselves: is this sacrament realized in me? More concretely: do I like only being served at God's table or do I get up to serve, like the Lord? Do I give in my life that which I receive at Mass? And as a Church we can ask ourselves: after receiving communion so many times, are we becoming people of communion? Pope Francis assured that the Eucharist converts Christians into constructors of peace. Additionally, he explained that the Word of God must be heard and put into practice. POPE FRANCIS How can the Gospel resolve the world's problems? What is the use of doing good in the midst of so much evil? So we fall into the mistakes of those paralyzed people who argue about Jesus' words instead of preparing to welcome the life change that He asks of us." Finally, the pope encourages all Christians to be bearers of hope, the "Cyrenean of joy," as Bishop Tonino Bello said. It's a reference to Simon of Cyrene, who carried the cross with Jesus. NEXT SUNDAY S READINGS Acts of the Apostles 1: 15-17, 20a, 20c-26 Psalm 103: 1-2, 11-12, John 4: John 17: 11b-19 As a witness of Jesus resurrection, Matthias is chosen (1) to replace him who was destined to be lost (3). Let us bless the Lord (Ps) who has so loved us and in whom we are called to love one another (2). OUR TITHING PARISH FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER This Year $ 7, Last Year $ 9, Youth $ Pennies From Heaven (April) $ Food Pantry Donations (April) 658 Critical Needs Donations (April) 280 Thank you for your continued generosity. Note From the Pastor, As we embark on the Diocesan Capital Campaign, our own Capital Campaign will come to an end. This will present us with a problem because income from our own campaign has kept us afloat for the past several years. Needless to say, we need to reflect on increased stewardship for our regular collection, and at the same time consider the Diocesan Campaign. The good news is that 75% of the monies raised in the Diocesan s campaign is returned to us. I hope this will make it possible for us to purchase the Lennox property on the corner of State & Winthrop Streets, providing us with much needed parking in the future. We would also be able to do some preventative maintenance work on our magnificent stained glass windows, protecting them for the future. I am also hoping to do some exterior insulation of the addition on the back of the rectory. I have been told that it would be the most cost effective means of solving the situation, which occurs when we have sudden or severe drops in exterior temperature. This past winter when the temperature dropped to between 20 &30 degrees below zero in that part of the rectory, it was only 58 to 60 degrees. Considering what we were able to accomplish in our own campaign, well over ten years ago as you may well remember, we raised 1.5 million in the active phase of this campaign. So our goal of 750 thousand for this new campaign should be easily doable as they say. If any one has any concerns please contact me. Fr. Steven Murray The Roman Catholic Diocese of Ogdensburg is seeking a full-time Director of Safe Environment Office and Charter Compliance Coordinator. The position oversees and monitors implementation of the USCCB s Charter for the Protection of Children & Young People and diocesan safe environment policies by Diocesan parishes, schools, offices and entities. On-site visits to parishes and schools throughout the diocese is required. Applicants must have a bachelor s degree with a minimum of 2-4 years experience in business or teaching, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Candidates must have excellent communication skills, good decision-making skills and proficiency with PC software. Submit letter of interest, resume and three professional references to: Human Resources Office, Diocese of Ogdensburg, P.O. Box 369, Ogdensburg, NY or ksnover@rcdony.org. Deadline for application is May 22, 2018.
5 Dear Friends in Christ: Pope Francis behavior exemplifies faith in action. His declaration of the Year of Families calls on each one of us to live the gospel with a special emphasis and recognition on the family, the Domestic Church. Mercy, Compassion, and the values that we so often associate with being both inclusive and communityminded begin in our families. Catholic Charities, as an agency reflects these gospel values and strives each day to address the many needs of the poor and marginalized of our North Country. As a community of believers, we can all participate in Christs mission of love and hope; charity is an essential component of this mission and you can help through providing a generous gift. Your donation can make a vital difference in the lives of individuals and families who struggle with unintended economic hardship. Catholic Charities also help those with emotional issues and provides counseling to families that want to more effectively communicate with one another. These people are not strangers but in so many cases are your neighbors, friends, co-workers and even family members who have knocked on Catholic Charities and asked for help. Catholic Charities depends on your financial support to continue reaching out to those who need us. Our programs and services express our Christian and Catholic priorities. As your Bishop and chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Catholic Charities, I am graciously asking you to consider making a generous gift to this wonderful organization. The Mother s Day Annual Appeal for Catholic Charities will take place in all our parishes on the weekend of May 13, Thank you for generosity and your support. ALTAR SERVER SCHEDULE MAY 12TH & 13TH 5:15 Daniel McCullouch 9:00 Jack and Samuel Charlebois and Bennett Pistner 11:00 Samantha Booth, McKenna and Keely Cooney 5:15 Gratefully yours in Christ, Most Reverend Terry R. LaValley Bishop of Ogdensburg
6 ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP Mother s Day Pay It Forward. Plant a tree in your mother s memory as a gift that will be enjoyed for years to come. Trees help to purify the air that is being polluted by carbon emissions. They provide us with a healthier planet for all creation to enjoy. Another option for planting your own tree is to donate to some organization that plants trees; for example, Food for the Poor, Bread for the World, Heifer International, to mention only a few.
