OCTOBER 15: TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDI- NARY TIME Is 25:6-10a/Phil 4:12-14, 19-20/Mt 22:1-14 or 22:1-10 We are all invited to the banquet, but do we accept the invitation? Jesus is speaking about the Kingdom of God in today's parable, but in a similar way, it also applies to Mass. Look at the excuses people in the parable give for not attending the celebration: they are too busy with their own plans to be interrupted by this generous invitation to the banquet. How often do we look at Mass as a burden or see it as an interruption of our other scheduled events - sporting events, chores that need to be done around the house or even work that we need to finish up - almost as if we are saying to God: "I will show up if it is convenient or if I have nothing better to do..." Even if we do show up for Mass, are we fully present? Or are we like the guest who came without a wedding garment? Do we spend that hour giving God the worship he is due by our active participation at Mass, or are we planning the rest of our day, thinking about our to-do lists?

You are welcome to attend any one of the meetings or all of them. Loving Mother, 100 years ago you appeared to shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal with a message of penance, prayer, and peace. As we in the Diocese of Ogdensburg prepare to celebrate the anniversary of our Cathedral dedicated to your Assumption and consecrate the entire diocese to your Immaculate Heart, we desire to become like those young shepherds. May we have spirits courageous to face any opposition to the faith, minds made pure of the corruption of the world, and hearts open to your love both to be received and to be shared. In a special way during this novena, I ask your intercession on this intention ( add your personal intention.) Lord Jesus, we honor those who bravely built up the Church here in our diocese and around the world. We praise you the one sure foundation of the Church and of our lives this day and always. Hear our prayers: Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us, Our Lady of the Assumption, pray for us, Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

4 Note From the Pope: Pope to Academy for Life: the Church must participate in the current cultural revolution This was the welcome Pope Francis received when he kicked off the Pontifical Academy for Life's workshop, Accompanying Life: New Responsibilities in the Technological Era. Surrounded by the academy's president, Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia and Fr. Renzo Pegoraro, he spoke about his desire for the Church when facing the current cultural revolution. POPE FRANCIS There is a real cultural revolution on the horizon of history at this time. The Church must, first and foremost, be part of it. In this perspective, it is essential to honestly recognize her weaknesses and shortcomings. Forms of subordination that have sadly characterized women's history should definitely be abandoned. A new beginning must be written in the ethos of the peoples, and this can be done by a renewed culture of identity and difference. He also spoke about current pressing ethical issues, including the gender identity crisis and gender dysphoria. POPE FRANCIS The understanding of man and woman is not right. Instead of countering the negative interpretations of sexual difference, which harm the irreducible value of human dignity, now the goal is to actually erase this difference, proposing techniques and practices that make it irrelevant for the development of each person and human relations. Then, as Pope Francis continued on the theme of human dignity at every stage of life, one of the smallest in the crowd also voiced his opinion. POPE FRANCIS Almost without realizing it, we now build cities increasingly hostile to children and communities increasingly inhospitable for elderly. The residences have walls without doors or windows, and while they should protect, they only suffocate. In the two days of the conference, discussions take place on the ethical approach to subjects such as the impact of technology on human life, the anthropological aspects of parenthood, the cultural features of the civilization of efficiency, and the relationship between technology, justice, and economic resources. OUR TITHING PARISH TWENTY SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME This Year $ 7, Last Year $ 9, Youth $ Electronic Giving (Sept) $ 2, MONTH OF SEPTEMBER This Year $ 37, Last Year $ 34, Thank you for your continued generosity! Next week, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Each year, the entire Church is invited to support the young mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay leaders serve the poorest of the poor. This year, we are invited to Chat With the Pope Learn more about his missions at ChatWithThePope.org. There are envelopes for this collection next week in your envelope packet or at the doors of the Church. Thank you for your support of World Mission Sunday. Note from the Pastor, The 2017 Bishop s Fund Appeal, One Bread, One Body, One Family, is winding down. Holy Family has always been very supportive of the appeal. The parish actually raised $49, last year and the parish goal last year was $48,000, so I don t believe it is unreasonable to make this year s goal $50,000. The easiest way to achieve the goal is to raise the number of parishioners who participate. The participation goal is 300. However the average number of parishioners who receive envelopes is 500. From where I sit, the participation goal ought to be closer to 400 not 300. So far 107 families have made a donation or pledge totaling $26, towards our goal of $50,000. The Bishop s Fund Appeal supports ministries, activities and programs that serve people throughout the diocese in ways that we as an individual parish could never do alone. Please prayerfully consider supporting this Appeal with a pledge or one-time gift. Convenient four payment plans are available and you can also make your gift on line at and click on the donate now tab found on the tool bar on the left. Any gifts received after the Appeal reaches its goal will be used to further supplement the Bishop s Good Samaritan Fund. So that you know that I put my money where my mouth is so to speak, my personal contribution to the 2017 Bishop s Fund Appeal is $2,750. As I have explained in the past, my car is paid for, so not having car payments every month allows me to be more generous to this worthwhile effort. Fr. Steve

5 October 2017 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Every October, the celebration of World Mission Sunday leads us to the heart of our Christian faith mission. In this year s Message for World Mission Sunday, Pope Francis explains that the Church s mission, directed to all men and women is based on the transformative power of the Gospel. We urgently need the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Holy Father reminds us of countless testimonies to how the Gospel helps to overcome narrowness, conflict, racism, tribalism, and to promote everywhere, and among all, reconciliation, fraternity, and sharing. This annual appeal is the Church s global effort to provide for the building up of over one thousand local churches in Asia and Africa, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe. Through the work of these churches, the Gospel of Jesus is proclaimed. The poor receive practical help and experience God s love and mercy, His hope and peace. I ask you to open your hearts as we reach out this World Mission Sunday to every corner of the globe with Christ s message of hope and peace. In carrying out our mission, we draw inspiration from Mary, Mother of Evangelization, who welcomed the Word of life in the depths of her humble faith. With the Holy Father, we pray, May the Virgin Mother help us to say our own YES, conscious of the urgent need to make the Good News of Jesus resound in our time. May she intercede for us so that we can acquire the holy audacity needed to discover new ways to bring the gift of salvation to every man and woman. Grateful always for your generosity of spirit and heart, and confident of your missionary commitment to share the joy of the Gospel and the hope it brings, I pray for God s blessings upon you and your families. Faithfully yours in the Lord, /lar Most Reverend Terry R. LaValley Bishop of Ogdensburg TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 15, 2017 Many are called, but few are chosen.
