SUNDAY OCTOBER 28: THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Readings: Jer 31:7-9/Heb 5:1-6/Mk 10:46-52 Bartimaeus, although blind, could see by the light of faith that Jesus was the Son of David. He totally places all this trust in the Lord, even to the point of dropping his cloak, possibly his only real possession and his protection from the elements. Once he is brought before Jesus, Jesus asks him a rather silly question: What do you want me to do? But by asking, Jesus shows respect for the blind man's freedom. Bartimaeus has to ask and by asking to show his act of faith. What a beautiful example of faith and prayer. Do we want a relationship of trust and freedom with Jesus? Then let us ask him to be able to see with the eyes of faith, trusting in his mercy until we see him face to face.

3 ACTIVITIES AHEAD IN OUR PARISH BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENING Our Parish Nurses will be in the Gathering Area next weekend taking blood pressures. Stop by and have yours checked. BAPTISMAL PREPARATION CLASS will be Monday, November 5th, 7:00PM in McGivney Hall. Please call the Rectory at during business hours if you are planning on having your child baptized. 7TH ANNUAL MUSICAL MISSION is scheduled for Thursday, November 8th, 6:30PM-8:30PM at Holy Family Church. Performers include: Turning Point-Islanders Men s a Capella Chorus; Indian River Strings+Honors Group; The Eleventh Hour Folk Group from Holy Family; Watertown High School Singers; and Leona & the Pistol Whippers Jazz Group. A free-will offering will benefit the Watertown Urban Mission. There will be refreshments. PRAYING THE ROSARY The Legion of Mary will be praying the Rosary Saturday, November 10th, beginning at 4:45PM. Everyone is invited to this prayer gathering before the 5:15PM Mass. PENNIES FROM HEAVEN The Knights of Columbus will be at the doors of the Church after Masses the weekend of November 10th & 11th collecting for our Seminarians. Thank you for your continued support. 4 Note From the Pope, During his weekly catechesis, Pope Francis continued to explain the Ten Commandments. This time focusing on the fifth command You shall not kill. He said there are different ways of killing a person than just physical. Anger, insult, scorn and indifference toward others can kill the unseen spirit within a person. The pope stressed the importance of doing the opposite of what Cain did to his brother Abel in the Old Testament. He said everyone is each other s keepers, protectors and guardians. The commandment not to kill is a call to love and mercy to live according to the life of Christ. Pope Francis concluded by reminding people life is a gift from God and Christ resurrected to restore everyone back to life. SUMMARY OF POPE'S CATECHESIS Dear brothers and sisters, In our continuing catechesis on the Ten Commandments, we turn now to the fifth: You shall not kill, which reveals how precious human life is in God s eyes; we are made in his image out of his infinitive love for us. However, we learn that there are other ways of killing a person: anger, insult, scorn and indifference towards others can kill, perhaps not their physical bodies, but rather the unseen spirit within them. Although the opposite of killing might seem to be not killing, that is only a first step towards loving. We need to do the opposite of what Cain did to Abel: we are each other s keepers, protectors and guardians. For this we need Christ s love and mercy. The commandment not to kill is a call to love and to mercy, a call to live according to the life of the Lord Jesus, who gave us life by rising to life; this life is the Father s gift to each of us. A Note From Our Organist: A parishioner recently asked me about the chances of having a choir again. The last time I called for singers, two years ago, only two showed up. One was a 5th grader and the other had been singing in the choir for 60 years or more. If you are interested in singing in a choir, here is what you have to do: make your way upstairs to the organ gallery 15 minutes before mass and have a seat, open your missal and sing! Once I get 6 women and 2 men who can sing to show up 15 minutes before mass on a regular basis, then we can talk more about putting a choir together. A church choir is a spiritual practice that takes time (preparation) and dedication. Rehearsals are minimally 90 minutes one night a week and ideally, you have to be prepared and at church 30 minutes before mass. Perhaps, with so many young families with children, this is why we don t have a choir. I have seen a great benefit in not having a choir with an increase of congregational singing. A choir is not meant to take the part of the assembly of the people. The parts of the mass are to be sung by the entire community. The same as with the Communion hymn; a song of prayer from the heart to be sung by everyone at the Lord s table. Now that you know the requirements, whether we have a choir or not is totally up to you. If you would just like to sit around one or two nights or afternoons a month and sing hymns, that would be fine with me also. Note From the Pastor, Please consider the notion of each day doing at least one holy moment where you allow your patience and generosity to be evident to your friends and family, or perhaps your coworker's. It could even be to those who assist you at the grocery store. And the great thing is that it is replicatable then. You can do it again the next day or even more than once a day. As the cold weather approaches, it is time again to get out our winter clothing. By that I mean hats, boots, scarves, gloves or mittens, coats, and ski pants, for children and adults. We are accepting donations of new or gently used items for the Watertown Urban Mission. I ask that you please make sure the gently used items are clean. I have in the past laundered some items but you could do this yourself before you donate them. There is a large bin next to the confessional where you can place your donations. Just a suggestion, you may have outerwear that you have not used in years or you bought and never used because it was in the back of a closet and you forgot you had it. This might be something to donate. If this sounds to you like an experience I might have had myself you could be right, because there are times I find it difficult to pass up a real bargain. As a friend of mine has said to me, you can t resist buying something especially if you think you are almost stealing it. So now that is my latest confession. Now go and search through your closets and see what you can come up with. There are two books in the Gathering Area that I recommend. They are $4.00 each. 5 ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP: Did you know that in the first half of the 20th century people consumed more non -renewable resources than in all of humankind s previous time on earth? Consider this week what non-renewable resources that you use. Are there any that could be reduced? I.e. Studies show up to 30% of the difference in miles per gallon is due to driving habits alone. We could save more than a ton of CO2 per year by accelerating slowly and smoothly, driving the speed limit, maintaining a steady speed and anticipating stops and starts.
