Your donations of lap robes, slip-proof slipper sox and new this year tote bags for wheelchairs or walkers are being accepted at the Rectory during business hours. The tote bags for wheelchairs and walkers may be purchased, or use your crafty skills to create one. Keep in mind that buttons and other fasteners may be difficult for many with arthritis. These special gifts will be distributed to our parish shut-ins just before Christmas. Thank you for remembering those who are not able to be out and about. NOVEMBER 5: THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Mal 1:14b 2:2b, 8-10/1 Thes 2:7b-9, 13/Mt 23:1-12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, but whoever humbles himself will be exalted. How hard it is, especially when we have been places in a role of authority where people notice us, to be humble. How hard it is not to want people s approval and to look good in the eyes of others. But what matters is to do the will of the one master, Christ our Lord. Everything we have is his, and every good we are able to do is pure gift. So let us work and pray so as to please the Lord, and everything else will fall into place.

3 ACTIVITIES AHEAD IN OUR PARISH PENNIES FROM HEAVEN the Knights of Columbus will be at the doors of the Church after all Masses the weekend of November 11th and 12th collecting for our Seminarians. Please give generously. MUSICAL MISSION Please join us and the interfaith community for a celebration in song of God's love. We will be hosting the MUSICAL MISSION on Sunday, November 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. in our beautiful church. There will be refreshments. A free-will offering will benefit the Watertown Urban Mission. Please come and bring friends. CONFIRMATION YEAR I next session is scheduled for Sunday November 12th and Confirmation Year II will be Sunday November 19th. Both classes meet in the Greystone Building at 3:00PM. FINANCIAL/PARISH COUNCIL MEETING will be Monday, November 13th, 7:00PM in the Rectory. Dinner for adults is $8.00, children 3 and over $4.00 and children under three eat for free. Take outs begin at 4:00PM. Please bring your own containers. You may purchase extra sauce at $5.00 per quart and extra meatballs are $.75 each. YOUTH BUSES FOR LIFE: High School Pilgrimage to the March for Life in Washington DC Online registration opened October 1st for the educational and spiritual high school pilgrimage to the DC March for Life. Three coach buses will depart the North Country on January 18th and return Jan 20th. Pickup locations- Northern bus - Massena, Canton and Gouverneur; Western bus - IHC in Watertown and Eastern bus - Our Lady of Lourdes in Schroon Lake. $150 per person includes transportation, hotel, breakfast, two dinners and shirt. Bishop LaValley will be joining the buses in DC! (All chaperones must be Virtus/Protecting God's Children trained.) 4 Note From the Pope: Pope in Santa Marta: Conversion is changing a worldly heart with the strength of Christ In his homily at Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis explained that Jesus asks each person to carry out an interior change. POPE FRANCIS Your heart, which was worldly and pagan, now becomes Christian with the strength of Christ: to change, this is conversion. It's to change your manner of acting; your works must change. It is a change, but it is not a change that is made up with make-up. It is a change that the Holy Spirit does from within. In conclusion, the pope said each person must pray and ask the Holy Spirit for this change. He also added that Christians must fight for their faith, because easy-going Christians, who don t fight, don t exist. EXTRACTS FROM THE PAPAL HOMILY Changing our way of thinking, changing our way of feeling. Your heart, which was worldly, pagan, now becomes Christian with the strength of Christ: to change, this is conversion. And changing your manner of acting: your works must change. It is a change, but it is not a change that is made with make-up. It is a change that the Holy Spirit makes, within. And I have to make it mine so that the Holy Spirit can act. And this means a battle, fighting! Easy-going Christians, who don t fight, don t exist. Those are not Christians, they are lukewarm. The tranquility necessary for sleep can be found even with a pill, but there are no pills for inner peace. Only the Holy Spirit, can give that peace of the soul that gives strength to Christians. And we must help the Holy Spirit, by making space in our hearts. A daily examination of conscience can help us in this. It can help us to fight against the maladies the enemy sows, which he called maladies of worldliness. The fight Jesus wages against the devil, against evil, is not something old, it is a modern thing, a thing of today, of all days, because the fire that Jesus has come to bring us is in our hearts. So we must allow Him to enter, and must ask ourselves, each day: how have I passed from worldliness, from sin, to grace? Have I made room for the Holy Spirit, so that He could act? The difficulties in our lives are not resolved by watering down the truth. The truth is this: Jesus has brought fire, and struggle. What am I going to do? 5 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which to look out Christ's compassion to the world. Yours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good. Yours are the hands with which he is to bless men now. These beautiful words from St. Teresa of Avila remind us of our baptismal call to serve God and one another. Every parishioner contributes to the vitality of one s parish. Each of us is to be the hands and feet of Christ. Our talents, gifts and resources are uniquely our own, selected specifically for us by God. We, as stewards of these gifts, are called to accept His gifts with gratitude; to develop and nurture His gifts responsibly to share His gifts with generosity and have a willingness to accept His call without counting the cost. Next weekend on Stewardship Sunday, I ask you to prayerfully reflect upon your unique gifts and talents. I invite you to open your heart and ask yourself: How will I respond to God s call? How can I use my gifts and talents to serve my parish, community and God? ow can I be the hands and feet of Christ? I am thankful to the many women, men and children who serve in our parishes in a wide variety of ministries throughout the year. I encourage those who might be hesitant, to talk with your pastor about those ministries in your parish where you can participate. Please also take a moment to encourage and invite others to share in your parish ministries. Many times, a kind word of encouragement will plant the seeds of faith in others as we answer God s call to serve. See us also on Facebook or at PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY There are many opportunities for participation here at Holy Family Church. One of these is the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Prayer Shawls have been made for many centuries. They are universal, embracing a symbol of an inclusive loving God. They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace, shelter and compassion to those who make and receive them. JoAnn Coursen, a Holy Family parishioner, has knit dozens of Prayer Shawls. She gives these away to anyone who needs one. Joann is always looking for helpers in this Ministry. You can each her at if you would like to be part of this Ministry.

6 Watertown Catechetical Board Religious Education Program for Persons with Disabilities The Religious Education Program for Children and Adults is sponsored by the four Catholic Parishes in Watertown. Sessions for members of the Catholic faith are held on Saturday mornings at the IHC Intermediate Building on Massey St. The Interfaith component of the program is held on Tuesday nights at the First Presbyterian Church. In addition there is also an Outreach component for those persons who are not able to attend the onsite sessions. The program presently ministers to one hundred and fourteen persons with disabilities. If you are interested in learning more about the program or would like to become a benefactor, you can contact Sister Diane Marie Ulsamer SSJ, Program Coordinator, at WATERTOWN URBAN MISSION The winter coats can be dropped off in the box in the Church. We will make sure they get to the Watertown Urban Mission. Thank you for your continued support of the less fortunate especially during the cold, winter months. PARISH SCHOOL NEWS CHRISTMAS GREENERY SALE Whether we are ready or not, the Christmas season will be here soon. We hope that everyone who decorates with greenery will place an order from us in support of Immaculate Heart Central School. All wreaths and novelties are made from Balsam and are decorated with pine cones, red berries and your choice of ribbon. Order forms may be found in the back of the Church and all order forms with payment must be returned to the IHC School office by Monday, November 6th. Checks should be make payable to IHC Elementary. Items can be picked up in the school gym of the IHC Primary Building, 122 Winthrop St. on Thursday November 30th and Friday December 1st, 2-6PM and Saturday December 2nd, 10AM-noon. Thanks for your support! IHC CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR is scheduled for Saturday, November 18th, 9:00AM-4:00PM at the Immaculate Heart Intermediate School. Admission is $2.00 and age 12 and under enter for free. Vendors will have a variety of items for purchase including jewelry, children s toys, wooden signs, ceramics, home made fudge and much more. Support local artists and IHC and kick start your Christmas shopping! The cold weather will be upon us before we know it. The Food Pantry at the Watertown Urban Mission will be in need of hot foods for families, such as canned soups, canned stews, canned spaghetti, canned chili, hot chocolate mixes. When grocery shopping, please put extras in your cart for the Urban Mission Food Pantry. ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP Are your leaves falling yet? They can be rich nourishment for next years garden, if you have a simple compost bin. If not, check with your local village to see, if they have a common compost site where they bring your leave collection and where you can pick up rich compose in the spring. Don t have one; make a suggestion to create one. Committing to the purchasing of recyclable paper bags instead of plastic bags can reduce the amount of plastic that go to the landfill, and reduce the amount of oil needed to produce them.
