3 ACTIVITIES AHEAD IN OUR PARISH CAPITAL CAMPAIGN will be the second collection at all Masses next weekend. Please use the envelopes in your envelope packet. If you don t receive envelopes, there will be envelopes for this collection by the doors of the Church. THE PARISH NURSES will be in the Gathering Area of the Church the weekend of October 7th and 8th to take your blood pressure. Stop by and have your blood pressure checked! PRAYING THE ROSARY The Legion of Mary will be praying the Rosary Saturday, October 14th, starting at 4:45PM. Everyone is invited to this prayer gathering before the 5:15PM Mass. PENNIES FROM HEAVEN The Knights of Columbus will be at the doors of the Church after the Masses the weekend of October 14th and 15th. Please be as generous as you are able for this collection for our Seminarians. CONFIRMATION YEAR I Sunday, October 15th, 3:00PM-6:00PM in the Greystone Building. WATERTOWN MISSION CRITICAL NEEDS Holy Family Church is collecting personal care items for the Critical Needs Program of the Watertown Urban Mission through mid October. These are items that cannot be purchased with Food Stamps. Some suggested items, but not limited to are shampoo, soap. razors, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, dish and laundry soaps and paper products. Please put your donations in the baskets inside the doors of the Church. CHURCH TOUR Learn about the historic stained-glass windows, paintings and religious items in our Church. Gary Charlebois will conduct a 45 minute tour Sunday, October 29th after the 9AM Mass. All are welcome. OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH The Catholic Churches of Watertown are organizing an Hour of Prayer everyday in October across from Planned Parenthood on Stone St. The Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet and other prayers and hymns will be recited from 12:00PM-1:00PM. Everyone is invited to participate. If you need a ride please call Richard at Altar and Rosary Newzbytes It s time for the Altar and Rosary 50/50 raffle. The drawing will be just in time for Christmas shopping. You may use the raffle ticket printed in the bulletin or purchase yours after the weekend Masses. Proceeds from ticket sales are used for purchasing candles, Altar linen and vestments, wine and other supplies for the Altar. Also, a parish youngster was sponsored for a week at Camp Guggenheim. As you can see, your support is greatly appreciated. ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE OUR PARISH BEREAVEMENT MEETING Monday, September 25th, 7PM at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph, 1425 Washington St., Watertown. The speaker, Mr. James Monaco, local psychoanalyst will talk on Mourning Your Loss. ST. ANTHONY S SPAGHETTI SUPPER Thursday, September 28th, 4:30PM-7:00PM at Msgr. Sechi Hall. Adults $8.00, children over 3 $4.00 and children under 3 no charge. Extra sauce may be purchased for $5.00 per quart and extra meatballs are $.75 each. Take outs begin at 4:00PM. Please bring your own containers. DIOCESAN BLUE MASS This year Bishop Terry R. LaValley will celebrate the Diocesan Blue Mass on Sunday, October 1, 2017 at 2:30 pm at St. Patrick s Church, 123 S. Massey Street, Watertown, NY The Blue Mass is the Church s way to offer thanks to God for the dedication and sacrifices made by the women and men in Law Enforcement/Corrections and to pray for their safety, as well as, for their families and communities. 4 Note From the Pope: Pope in Santa Marta: avoid the temptation of spiritual masochism Resuming his daily Masses in Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis spoke about two particular temptations. One is to only follow Jesus, without the Cross, thus only wanting a spiritual teacher who can offer consolation. The other temptation, he explains, only leads to depression and lack of hope. POPE FRANCIS The other temptation is a cross without Christ, that is, the anguish of remaining down, depressed by the weight of sin and without hope. This is a type of spiritual masochism: only the cross, without hope and without Christ. The Cross is a mystery of love; the Cross is faithful; the Cross is noble. Finally, he encouraged believers to ask themselves the following questions: Is Christ crucified a mystery of love? Do I follow a cross without Jesus? Do I follow Jesus without a cross? EXCERPTS OF THE HOMILY IN ENGLISH Jesus comes down from Heaven to raise all of us up to Heaven. This is the mystery of the Cross. Jesus descent is to the lowest point, even unto humiliation. He emptied himself for love, and because of this God exalted him and made him go up. Only if we succeed in understanding this complete descent can we understand the salvation which this mystery of love offers us." A Christ without a cross is not the Lord: he is a teacher, nothing else. This is perhaps what Nicodemus, without realizing it, was seeking. It is one of the temptations. Yes, Jesus: What a good teacher, but without the cross, [only] Jesus. Who bewitched you with this image? Paul is angry. Jesus Christ is presented but not as crucified. The other temptation is a cross without Christ, that is, the anguish of remaining down, depressed by the weight of sin and without hope. Today we should take a minute to ask ourselves these questions. Is Christ crucified a mystery of love? Do I follow Jesus without a cross: a spiritual teacher who fills me with consolation and good counsel? Do I follow a cross without Jesus, without complaining, with this masochism of the spirit? Do I let myself be carried by this mystery of lowering, that is, of total emptying and lifting up of the Lord? 5 News From the Living Stones Committee The Living Stones Committee has prepared a series of questions and answers from all three parishes. We have presented the final questions at this time in this issue of the bulletin. Parishioners can view the entire set of questions and answers by going to the parish website News Living Stones Committee. These questions will address such items as pastoral ministry, unity, finances, timelines, schedules etc. Parishioners are invited to mail or their questions to the pastor for eventual inclusion among these questions.

6 FAITH COMMUNITY NURSES NOTES There is a program offering free Cancer screening through Lewis County Public Health for Jefferson County residents who are under insured or uninsured. The screenings offered are free. They include mammography, Pap smears and colon-rectal screenings. For more information call (315) PRAY FOR OUR SEMINARIANS: The Diocese rejoices in five new Seminarians who will join our other four men in discerning what God is calling them to do! God is good! Please continue to pray that God will send more workers into the vineyard to serve as priests, deacons and consecrated religious! Our parish s Bishop s Fund Appeal is coming to a close. If you have not made a gift or pledge, please pray about your decision and make a pledge or one-time gift. Pledge envelopes are located at the back of the Church. Emily Theisen The Lord asks of us: "Are you envious because I am generous?" We live in an entitlement culture. We often grumble when others receive accolades and honors. We envy the success of others. How much energy do we waste keeping up with the Joneses, or hanging on and worrying about our possessions, when everything we have is a gift. Rather than imitating the Joneses, can we follow Christ in giving of ourselves. Can we be grateful for all he has given us and give in return by showing mercy and kindness to our neighbor. For it is in giving that we receive. Let us not be afraid to serve others, for in serving we will find true peace and joy.
