3 ACTIVITIES AHEAD IN OUR PARISH URBAN MISSION FOOD PANTRY During the month of May, the Evangelization Team is collecting spring cleaning products. Special boxes are by the doors of the Church for your donations. The Food Pantry continues to need can openers. These may be placed in the special donation boxes also. The Team thanks you in advance for your generosity. PENNIES FROM HEAVEN COLLECTION will be the weekend of May 20th and May 21st. The Knights of Columbus will be at the doors of the Church after the Masses collecting for our Seminarians. Thank you in advance for your continued support. IMPACT YOUTH GROUP The next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, May 21st at 3:30PM-5:00PM at the Greystone Building (across from Holy Family Church). The meetings are open to all students in grades 6th-12th. We learn about and discuss our faith. There will be pizza, soda and games. Come with any ideas you have for future activities. Hope to see you there! FINANCE AND PARISH COUNCIL MEETING Note Date Change: Monday, May 22nd, 7:00PM in the Rectory. THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION is scheduled for Wednesday, May 24th at 7:00PM. CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL will be the 2nd collection at all Masses the weekend of May 27th and May 28th. Right now, over 40% of dioceses in the US are considered home missions because they are unable to fund essential pastoral work needed in their communities. ENTERTAINING ANGELS: A Parish Hospitality Workshop Saturday June 3 from 8am-4pm at SUNY Potsdam. Join us for a day-long workshop sponsored by the Offices of New Evangelization and Formation for Ministry that explored how we as a Catholic Faith Community welcome people. A hospitable community doesn t just happen. Hospitality takes effort and intentionality and work. It isn t just the responsibility of a select few on a hospitality committee. It requires each and every one of us. Please join us for a practical one-day workshop at SUNY Potsdam to learn how you can make a difference in how your parish community opens the doors to Christ. 4 Note From the Pope, Pope at the General Audience: Pope Francis reflected on his trip to Egypt. He thanked all those involved, while stressing the importance of peace. Recalling his meetings with different Christian denominations and other civilian leaders, he explained that peace is the fruit of an education to wisdom that respects the religious dimension of our existence. After witnessing the beauty of the Church in Egypt, he encouraged Egyptians to continue to persevere in the Gospel. He also reminded all Christians that peace is a civil order in which all have a part to play. Dear Brothers and Sisters: My recent Apostolic Journey to Egypt took place at the invitation of the President of the Republic, the Coptic Orthodox Patriarch, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and the Catholic Coptic Patriarch. I thank all those who helped in its planning and organization. My meeting with the Grand Imam, and my message to the International Conference for Peace, recalled that peace is the fruit of an education to wisdom and a humanism that respects the religious dimension of our existence. Our covenant with God, grounded in the commandment of love of God and neighbor, inspires our efforts to build a just and peaceful civil order in which all have a part to play. Egypt s great cultural and religious heritage gives the nation a special role in this work of peacemaking. In my meeting with the Coptic Orthodox Patriarch, Pope Tawadros II, we reaffirmed our mutual commitment to unity and prayed together for the victims of the recent attacks. At Mass with the Catholic community, and in my meeting with priests, religious and seminarians, I saw the beauty of the Church in Egypt and I encouraged everyone to persevere in the hope of the Gospel. May the Holy Family, who once found refuge in Egypt, bless and protect its people with prosperity, fraternity and peace. I greet the English speaking pilgrims and visitors taking part in today s General Audience, particularly the groups from Ireland, Denmark, Finland, New Zealand, Singapore, India, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Canada and the United States of America. In the joy of the Risen Christ, I invoke upon you and your families the loving mercy of God our Father. May the Lord bless you all! Note From the Pastor, When looking at the figures for last month, you might think wow, look how well we are doing and I am really pleased. However, remember we had an extra week and both Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday are in this month and they were in March last year. I am still very pleased by your generosity. The suffering of the Syrian people is heart breaking, so whatever we can do to assist them we will do. Please remember the Bishop Chbeir, Priest and people of Lattakia in your prayers. The priests of the Diocese will be in Lake Placid for our annual presbyterial convocation from Monday May 15th thru Wednesday May 17th. Please pray for the priests of our Diocese and for vocations to the priesthood for our Diocese. The work of the Living Stones Committee, the consolidation of parishes, is because of the shortage of priest, in case you haven t figured that out yet. Fr. 5 St. Mary s and St. John s Pilgrimage to National Shrine of Saint Kateri Tekawitha and The Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs Tuesday, June 6, 2017 Join parishioners from St. Mary s in Clayton and St. John s in Lafargeville for a day trip to Auriesville to visit the National Shrine of Saint Kateri Tekawitha ( and The Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs (auriesvilleshrine.com) on Tuesday, June 6. The day will begin with a 7:00 A.M. departure from St. Mary s (possible Watertown pick up) and include talks and tours with guides and a visit to the gift shop at each shrine, and a mass with our pastor, Fr. LaBaff, at the Coliseum on the grounds of The Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs. Cost for the day is $100, which covers coach transportation from St. Mary s, a donation to each shrine, a catered lunch, and dinner at Symeons near Utica on the way home. Arrival back at St. Mary s is expected to be 9:00 P.M. 6 MAY 14: FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Readings: Acts 6:1-7/1 Pt 2:4-9/Jn 14:1-12 In today s Gospel, Philip asks Jesus to show him the Father. He has been a disciple of Jesus since the beginning and still doesn t recognize Jesus as being one with the Father. It is easy in today s culture to see Jesus just as another teacher or religious leader. It is harder to recognize him as Lord and God. How many of us, even after years of going to Mass, fail to recognize Jesus. It is sometimes difficult to trust that he will come back for us and lead us home. Yet he has promised that he will prepare a place for us. He is the way, the truth and the life. In him is our way to the Father. In him is our home. ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP Easter Season: A time of new life and rebirth. We find ourselves wanting to clean out, whether it is in our closet, basement or garage. Remember that those things that are clutter for us can be a new beginning for someone less fortunate. Donate to a local organization, have a garage sale or recycle at a transfer station. Reuse. Recycle. Reduce.
