3 ACTIVITIES AHEAD IN OUR PARISH RESPECT LIFE COLLECTION: The weekend of January 26/27 is the annual Respect Life Collection. Last year twenty-one grants were awarded which benefited those working to build a Culture of Life in our diocese. It's important with this year's legislative climate that we provide alternatives to abortion and help to educate the next generation. The collection provided funds for 7 Gabriel Projects, Plattsburgh Crisis Pregnancy Center, Birthright, Right to Life affiliates, 4 pilgrimages to the DC March for Life (two high school, one college and one family bus), 3 Pro-Life County Fair Booths as well as other pro-life efforts. Thank you for your generosity to this collection. THE ST. JOSEPH CUPERTINO FRATERNITY OF THE 3RD ORDER OF SECULAR FRANCISCANS next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 27th, 1:30PM at McGivney Hall (new location). Are you looking for a way to come closer to Christ? Come join us CONFIRMATION YEAR I next session is Sunday, February 3rd at 11:00AM-2:00PM. PRAYING THE ROSARY the Legion of Mary will be praying the Rosary Saturday, February 9th beginning at 4:45PM. Everyone is invited to this prayer gathering before the 5:15PM Mass. JANUARY 20: SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Readings: Is 62:1-5/1 Cor 12:4-11/Jn 2:1-11 Both the first reading and the Gospel use wedding imagery: God rejoices in Israel just as a bridegroom rejoices in his bride. Jesus inaugurates his ministry at the wedding of Cana. This gospel is rich in details: Mary alerting Jesus to the lack of wine, and then telling the servants to do whatever he tells them. The empty water jars to be filled with water which Jesus will turn into wine. The superabundance (more than 120 gallons!) of the most excellent wine and the fact that this first sign or miracle lets the disciples begin to believe in Jesus. How have we experienced the abundance of God? How do we share this good news with others? 4 Note From the Pope, In his weekly General Audience Pope Francis continued his catechesis on the Our Father prayer. This week he focused on the need for perseverance in prayer. The pope said that in the Gospels Christ's entire life is 'steeped in prayer.' He noted how Jesus every action is guided by His communion with the Father and the Holy Spirit. The pope used the examples of when Christ prays for Peter's perseverance in faith and for forgiveness when on the cross. He stressed the need for this constancy of prayer and unwavering trust that the Father will answer our petitions. The pope added that even though God's saving plan remains mysterious one can be assured that He is the loving Father who longs to fulfill the desire for happiness in every human heart. SUMMARY OF POPE'S CATECHESIS Dear brothers and sisters, In our continuing catechesis on the Lord s Prayer, we now consider Jesus teaching on the need for perseverance in prayer. We see from the Gospels that Christ s entire life is steeped in prayer, born of his communion with the Father and the Holy Spirit who guides his every action. Jesus constant prayer is seen above all in the events of his passion. At the Last Supper, he intercedes for Peter s perseverance in faith (cf. Lk 22:32), and his last words from the cross are a prayer for forgiveness and a confession of trust in the Father s will. When the disciples ask Jesus to show them how to pray, he gives them the words of the Our Father. But he goes on to tell two parables that teach the need for constancy in prayer and unwavering trust that the Father will answer our petitions. As a good Father, God answers every prayer in his good time and according to his saving plan. Though the unfolding of that plan remains mysterious, we can be confident that, in the end, ours is a loving Father who longs to fulfill the desire for happiness present in every human heart. I welcome the English-speaking pilgrims and visitors taking part in today s Audience, especially the groups coming from the United States of America. Upon all of you, and your families, I invoke the joy and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ. God bless you! Note From the Pastor, OUR TITHING PARISH THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD This Year $ 8, Last Year $ 7, Youth $ MONTH OF DECEMBER This Year $ 52, Last Year $ 51, Thank you for your continued generosity! CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE Total Pledges and One Time Gift $426,000 Total Participating Households 183 This is 76% of our goal with only 19% of parishioners participating. Let s keep up the good work! Our goal is $ The Meals on Wheels Program of the Watertown Urban Mission faces challenges even though everyone regards the service as a real benefit to those individuals who use the program. A few facts concerning the good work done by Mission staff and the wonderful volunteer drivers: On average there are 75 recipients, within a five mile radius of the City of Watertown. Meals on Wheels delivers an average of 2,700 meals per month and more than 33,000 meals each year. So the program relies on donations and grants along with what individuals are able to pay. Meals on Wheels is a critical service, not only because it delivers nutritious meals to local elderly and disabled individuals. It s also critical because it provides a safety net for a vulnerable population-our volunteers provide a regular presence in their lives every day. For many recipients, their volunteer deliverer may be the only person they see every day. This is important not only for their mental and emotional well being, but also because we may be the first to notice when someone has suffered a fall, or an illness. For many, Meals on Wheels is what keeps them living in their home; without this service, they may have to live in a nursing home or other institutional settings. What I am proposing is an :Adopt a Senior Project to assist our elderly and home bound neighbors. With the average cost of $5.00 per meal supporting a senior; for 3 months would cost $450. dollars; for 6months $900. dollars and for 1 year $1,800. dollars. However what ever help a individual could provide would be appreciated. So for example one month would be $150. dollars and one week would be 35.dollars. I would appreciate your thoughts and input on this matter. Fr. Steve
