1 Messiah Messiah Lutheran Church Mounds View, MN O C T O B E R, Sharing The Savior Developing Disciples N E W S L E T T E R Staff FAMILIES MOVING FORWARD Oct Once again Messiah will be hosting up to four homeless families for one week. FMF is part of Beacon Interfaith who work to help find affordable, adequate housing for families in the metro area. At any given time there are 10,000 homeless people in this area. Fmf specifically works with families by assisting them in the many areas it takes to help them become self-sufficient. They are housed at the day center in No Mpls during the day and in the evening transported to various churches where they are given dinner, safe environment to sleep, breakfast in the morning and transported back to the center. Messiah is one of those churches. They are housed in Luther Hall, where rooms are set up for each family. We provide our guests dinner, an activity and breakfast. We need assistance in each of these areas. Most of the areas require less than four hours. You have someone with you, training is provided and, most important, the rewards of being with our guests is well beyond expectations. We need approximately 50 volunteers to make this happen. Ext. 2 GRIEFSHARE We have a Griefshare group meeting on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. here at Messiah in the Fireside Room (September December). If you are grieving the death of a loved one or know of someone who is, this is the invitation to come. We view a video which shows how Christians handle their grief and also view counselors who have worked with grieving people. Then we discuss the video and support each other. If you have questions, you may call the church office at or call Karen Hagford at or Jim or Kay Kinzie at You may also just come you will be welcome! Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms. For the Lord is the great God, And the great King above all gods. Psalm 95:2-3 BLOOD DRIVE Blood Drive Here at Messiah on Tuesday, November 10th is the day of the upcoming Red Cross Blood Drive. It goes from 2:00 7:00 p.m. You will have an opportunity to sign up for an appointment time between services on October 25th or you can make an appointment at redcrossblood.org. You can also just come and you will be taken as soon as possible. Remember blood donations are life-saving and we thank you in advance for your willingness to give yours! 2
3 Managing or Mismanaging Over the course of a lifetime, many of you will handle a fortune. The following chart indicates various income levels and the potential earnings over a lifetime. Income Per Year Total Earnings if working for 40 years $25,000 $1,000,000 30,000 1,200,000 40,000 1,600,000 50,000 2,000,000 60,000 2,400,000 70,000 2,800,000 80,000 3,200,000 90,000 3,600, ,000 4,000,000 Does your lifestyle reflect the proper management of money, or are you mismanaging the money God has given you? Are you honoring the Lord by showing gratitude for all He has given you by giving to your church and those in need? Are you saving a good portion of your income? A basic and essential decision on how to manage your money is how to allocate your money to giving, saving, and spending. That allocation tells a lot about a person. How you handle your money tells where your values, interests, and priorities lie. Your financial condition, when it is all said and done, is a spiritual and character issue. How interesting it would be if everyone during a particular church service had his or financial profile flashed on a screen for everyone to see. If you bank statement was shown some of you would be embarrassed, because it could show that you spend more on bowling, golfing, or other recreation interests than you give to the Lord through your church. It also could show a lack of discipline relating to spending. As Jesus said in Matthew 6:21 Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. What does your check register say about you? Where is your treasure, and, therefore, your heart? Are you honor God? 3
4 BAZAAR IS NOVEMBER 7, 2015 Many projects were submitted for Women of Messiah to consider in using the proceeds from this year s bazaar. Hopefully, these goals will be reached. 5 OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD This Christmas season, you can share joy and hope with a needy child in a country troubled by natural disaster, famine, war or terrorism by participating in Operation Christmas Child. Each child receiving an OCC shoebox will receive not only the enclosed gifts, but the Gospel message in that child s own language and an invitation to learn more about Jesus through a local church. Your gifts can be placed in a regular shoebox, gift wrapped or not (top and bottom wrapped separately), or placed in a plastic shoebox-size snap lid container lined with tissue (the plastic container can be used as well). Fill your box, add a label indicating the age range and gender the box is meant for, and enclose a check for $7 made out to Samaritan s Purse to cover the expenses to get the box to its destination; when the lid is in place, close the box up with a rubber band but do not seal it shut. Suggested contents for the box include school supplies (pens, pencils, sharpener, markers, paper, crayons, etc.); hygiene items such as soap in a ziplock bag, washcloth, comb, brush, toothbrush, toothpaste (also bagged); small-scale toys, including cars, dolls, stuffed animals, slinkies, Etch-a-Sketch, balls, ink pads and stamps, stickers, puzzles, craft kits, coloring books and picture books; wearables such as t-shirts, sunglasses, caps, jewelry, hair ornaments, socks and watches; treats, such as hard candies, lollipops, mints and gum (all ziplocked); and you may also include a personal note and a photo if you like; occasionally a gift giver will get a letter in return. DO NOT INCLUDE liquids, lotions, items that can melt, medicines, war toys, breakables or used items; these will be removed at the processing center. If you are paying the shipping, please place your envelope in the top of the shoebox; if you are packing more than one shoebox, a check covering the entire group of boxes may be placed in one box. Another option is to pay your shipping online (samaritanspurse.org/occ), print out your label(s), and you will receive an when your shipment reaches its destination. Your box(es) may be placed in the designated area outside the church offices no later than Sunday, November 22. If you have questions about packing your box, please contact Denise Rust, Look for additional ideas, labels, boxes, etc. in the gathering space. 5
6 WOMEN OF MESSIAH Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 13th. We will start with a potluck at 6:00 followed by our business meeting. We will also be making candy wreaths for the bazaar and wrapping shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child/Samaritan s Purse. Don t forget the bazaar on November 7th (see the separate article for more information). Mark your calendar now for Advent by Candlelight on December 1st. We will have music by Tara Brueska. This is always a beautiful evening of fellowship, entertainment, and delicious desserts. Everyone is welcome to attend. Watch for signups closer to the date to host a table or attend. LWML October 4th is LWML Sunday. Did you know that the Lutheran Women s Missionary League has set a goal of 2 million dollars to fund mission grants on the National Level for the biennium. Minnesota South District has set a goal of 260 thousand dollars. 75% of the mites collected by LWML groups in our district go to the district mission pledge and 25% go to national. You can read about the work of the national LWML and who will receive these grants at There is also information on the district missions in the Women on a Mission newsletter available on the LWML bulletin board. The money is collected through the use of mite boxes based on the Biblical account of the widow s mite (Luke 21:1-4). Look for the large mite box on LWML Sunday to contribute. Women of Messiah are part of the LWML Minnesota South District. This is further divided into conferences and zones. We are in need of a delegate from our guild to attend conference and zone events. There will be a Capital Conference Zone Rally at Trinity Lutheran Lake Johanna on Saturday, October 17th. 6
