1 Messiah Messiah Lutheran Church Mounds View, MN Sharing The Savior Developing Disciples J U L Y, N E W S L E T T E R America Prayer Rally Update On June 16th, twenty-three members from Messiah rode a school bus to Franklin Graham s Decision America Prayer Rally at the State Capitol in St. Paul. This was an eventful day for us standing together with all denominations of Christians confessing to God we are all sinners. We are all responsible for the secularism that has and is happening in these United States in the past 40 years. We have had a lackadaisical attitude about government in letting others represent us. We may have voted for people without knowing if they have a Biblical background. We are sinners. We are lazy with an attitude of trusting those who run for government positions. How do we change our attitudes? We ourselves become more active and study the roster of people running for government positions. What is their biography? What is their history? Do they have Biblical values and principles which will represent us and our Christian beliefs? Maybe, our prayers will lead us to run for a position ourselves. We are losing our freedoms as Christians by letting secular laws come into being. What did Franklin Graham urge us to do this election year? Pray, pray, pray for ourselves and our nation and become active in government. Start at the lower levels run for a school board position, city council, mayor, commissioner, etc. God gave us this great country these United States of America. Pledge your allegiance to it and do your God given duty and VOTE and PRAY, PRAY, PRAY FOR AMERICA! Marlene Bast Staff Ext. 3 XYZ GROUP XYZ in the remainder of XYZ (extra years of Zest) does not have any membership, but is open to any member of Messiah and their friends who want to come along and learn more about this wonderful area where we live. We don't always have an event every month, but we get close. For the rest of 2016, we do have some fun plans made. As we get closer to the date of each event, we post a sign up sheet on the bulletin board by the elevator. In July, we'll be going to a Saints game for which the tickets have already been ordered and paid. On August 24th, we're going to Fort Snelling to learn more about a familiar site by going on a tour called "Beneath the Surface at Fort Snelling". We'll find out what the archeologists are discovering that tells about all the uses of Fort Snelling through the centuries. Cost is $16 for seniors. More information as we get closer. On September 22, we'll go an a Upper St Croix leaf tour cruise which includes lunch. Cost will be $ On October 18, we've scheduled a tour of the new Viking stadium. In November, we will have a tour of the Martin Luther Art and Reformation exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. This exhibit is sponsored by Thrivent and is in the Twin Cities for a limited showing. It's traveling outside of Germany for the first time. We will publish our date later. Come along for any or all events. For information or questions, see Hitzemans or Leverkuhns. Sign Changer Jerry Garner Altar Guild T. Vosika N. Miller D. Rademacher S. Remme 3 Ushers 7:30 R. 4 IT S CHRISTMAS IN JULY! Christmas is always a busy season for everyone, but also very special! It s a time of shared fun, joyful giving, memory-making, as we remember how God sent us the best gift of all.jesus. We enjoy getting and giving other people gifts and spending time together. Why not start celebrating early during a slower time of year? You can wear shorts and sandals, instead of coats and mittens! There s always great response to collecting filled shoeboxes for the Operation Christmas Child program every fall. Families, couples, individuals enjoy putting together a shoebox filled with items for children in need. As part of Messiah s 75 th Anniversary Celebration we re having a Christmas in July party with an Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Packing Event. Instead of going shopping and then bringing in a filled shoebox, as we do in the fall, you can come to this event and put together a shoebox right here! Just bring your enthusiasm and a heart for helping others. There will be stations with a collection of different items where you can choose what you would like to go into the shoebox. You decide if you re packing for a girl or boy and what age group. You can write a note or color a picture to include in the shoebox as well. The completed shoeboxes will be taken to OCC where they will be shipped to children in need around the world, along with a Gospel message. There will also be fun activity stations with crafts and games for children as well. DATE: Saturday, July 23 TIME: Come anytime between 8:30-11:30 am. (Please note this is a time change from the original listing to allow people to be able to come early before pursuing other summer activities.) PLACE: Messiah Lutheran Church Blue Room This is open to the Community! Come alone or bring your family, friends, and neighbors and have a good time while doing something to help others! We wish you a Merry Christmas Operation Christmas Child is a part of Samaritan s Purse. For more information on OCC and their mission you can go to The collection of filled shoeboxes for OCC will still take place in the fall as usual. 4

10 STEWARDSHIP The Bible and Money There are literally thousands of books on the topic of financial planning and/or personal management of money. Some of these books are well-written and can be very helpful in suggesting prudent ways to manage, save, spend, and invest money. However, as Christians, we have a great resource in the Bible which gives us wisdom about money that exceeds all other resources. Some of God s guidance relating to money is as follows: Realize all your wealth comes from God: Wealth and honor come from You; You are the ruler of all things (1 Chronicles 29:12) God makes all wealth possible: But remember the Lord your God, for it is He Who gives you the ability to produce wealth. (Deuteronomy 8:18) Put God first: But seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33) Getting more is not the solution: Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loses wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless. (Ecclesiastes 5:10) Be content with what you have: I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. (Philippians 4:11) Wealth is more than what you possess: Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. (Luke 12:15) Wisdom is more precious than riches: For Wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her. (Proverbs 8:11) Giving brings more blessings than receiving: It is more blessed to give than to receive. (Acts 20:35) Excessive debt is a call to slavery: The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. (Proverbs 22:7) If we accept these attitudes and principles, our lives will be more stable and we will be content with what the Lord provides. 10

11 Summer CORE News! Thanks to all who have been providing and/ or giving prayer shawls, lap blankets, chemo caps, hospital/walker gadget bags and kids tied fleece blankets. Please continue to think of these resources as gifts of compassion and mercy when you have friends, neighbors, of family who could benefit from receiving them. You can access them in the first room off the main office. Our CORE group will meet again Friday, September 9th. Call Linda S or Dayle B if you have questions or want to access these resources. DONATIONS REQUESTED Messiah S 75th Anniversary Celebration for July is a Christmas in July party, that will include a PACKING PARTY for Operation Christmas Child. Remember they cannot accept any liquids, breakable items, or warrelated items. Also please do not donate food or candy items as these boxes may not be shipped for months. Cash donations also accepted (pre-event and at the event) to buy items for the shoeboxes or to help Samaritan s Purse with shipping costs. We also need empty shoeboxes! Feel free to donate 1 item, or 2 or 20 (or whatever you d like...all are appreciated!)
