Yikes. This photo is all too real for me! As a working wife and mom of five, it is reasonable to assume that many of my days and moments would feel this way! But every fall I ask myself and challenge Sunday School families to consider WHAT are your PRIORITIES? Both as a parent and as a beloved child of God? So here is a very simple reflection exercise for YOU to have a heart-to-heart with God and ask what He desires for you and your family in the coming school year. And, when you have those answers, let me know how can we partner with you to accomplish your GOALS. Blessings, Allison Burkhow 1. BE STILL. Quiet your mind to listen Be still, and know that I am God... Psalm 46:10 2. What are the things you are thinking about doing this year? 3. What are your goals and priorities, or resolutions this school year? 4. When you put these lists together in prayer, what CHOICES are you going to make? What ACTIONS will you take?..the Lord answered, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed or indeed only one. Luke 10:41-42 To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen. Jude
September, 2018 ONE Body MANY Parts Welcome to Messiah! We are so happy you are here! We have been praying for you and your family! These are just a few of the many phrases we have heard since arriving in Minnesota on August 1 st. What an amazing welcome our family has received. Thank you! We, too, are so glad to be here and are looking forward to being a part of the Messiah family! Over the past few weeks I have spent time not only getting settled in the office (and at home), but getting you know the people of Messiah. It has been so much fun! As you should already know, we have an awesome staff at Messiah. They have certainly made the beginning of this transition seamless. I have also had the opportunity to attend meetings with the Elders and the Leadership Council. What a great group of Brothers and Sisters in Christ. All of them have a heart for serving the Lord and the people of Messiah! What a blessing. I have also had the chance to meet many of you, I am trying to remember your names, whether at a worship service or at a meeting of your favorite group at church. Paul reminds of some pretty important things in 1 Corinthians 12 But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 1 Corinthians 12:24-25 What a joy it is to be a part of the Body of Christ! We are ONE body with MANY parts. I thank God for the BODY as well as for the PARTS! For each of you, sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father. Over the next days, weeks, months and years, I look forward to not only meeting the many parts of the body at Messiah but also walking with you as you grow in your faith. By the way, my contact and social media information is: rsteensma@messiah-lutheran.org Church: Facebook and Twitter: PastorRich Steensma I d love to talk or connect with you! 4 BAZAAR IS NOVEMBER 3, 2018 Plans are being made for this year s bazaar. All proceeds will be divided in half, with half going to Outreach projects and one half to Inreach projects. The projects will be selected at the September 11 meeting of Women of Messiah. Anyone may submit a suggestion for a project. The forms to fill out are in a box on the bookshelf by the front door of the office. Your name and phone number must be included. Including the amount of funding helps the group to make a decision. Deadline for submitting a request is September 9. In order for a bazaar to be successful, MANY items are needed to display on the tables. You are encouraged to work on projects that can be sold, such as crafts, jewelry, doll clothes, quilts, Christmas items, dish towels, etc. Whatever you make will be appreciated. Also popular are goodies from the garden: pickles, salsa, gourds, green plants the possibilities are endless. Over 100 jars of jams, jellies and pickles were sold last year. Lots of cookies are needed for the popular Christmas Cookie Parade. Antiques are sold, as well as attic treasures. Profits from the Toy Room will go to Feed My Starving Children. Keep the bazaar in mind when you see something in your attic or basement that is no longer useful to you. Someone else may want it! November seems like a long time off, but it is only 10 weeks away! Now is the time to get started on your craft item! GRIEFSHARE GROUP We are planning to have another GriefShare Group starting Monday, September 10 and meeting on Mondays from 4 5:30 pm for 13 weeks. If you are grieving the loss of a loved one, or know of someone who is, here is an invitation to join the group. Each session is Bible -based and designed to be uplifting, informative, and encouraging. We will watch a video featuring experts on grief and recovery subjects as well as personal stories of Christians who have experienced loss and grief. After the video there will be discussion time and an opportunity to interact with others who are experiencing many of the same things you are. If you are interested or if you have questions or want more information, call the church office at or call Jim or Kay Kinzie at There are also brochures available to take on the rock near the church office and at the Welcome Center. 4
STEWARDSHIP If Only Most discontented people believe they can correct their problems through some external changes. Their daily grinds result in a life of self-pity. They focus on events that they believe could have made a difference. Discontentment or contentment is a state of the mind. Contentment has little to do with outward circumstances, but people still focus on if only things would change. The what if s or if only s are not going to make a meaningful difference, but people believe that changing circumstances will change everything/ Do we find ourselves asking: If only we owned a nicer home? If only we had more money? If only we didn t live in this neighborhood? If only we had more friends? If only we had a different career? The list of if only s can be endless. The if only s or what if s are not going to make a meaningful difference in our state of mind, because changing our external circumstances will not cause a lasting change within us. Until we find our rest in Christ, we are going to continue searching for contentment. The theologian Augustine said, Thou hast made us for Thyself, O God, and the heart of man is restless until it finds its rest in Thee. People or things will never fill us. Only God s presence will bring us contentment. When we depend on the Lord and place our trust in Him, we can be content in all circumstances. We won t need to dwell on if only. God s grace gives us the ability to preserve in life s toughest situations. In the book The Hiding Place, Corrie Ten Boom relates that she and her sister Betsy were sent to Nazi concentration camps which were filled with filth, disease, and pestilence. Their particular barracks was infested with fleas, but, through God s race, they were even able to see the blessings in fleas. Because of the fleas the German guards chose not to enter the barracks which allowed Corrie and Betsy to gather the other ladies in Bible study and prayer. God s word sustained them in their time of need. Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstance, for this is God s will for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). May God grant us all discerning hearts and minds to see that through Christ our glasses are always half full rather than half empty. 5

WOM's funeral committee would like to thank all those who have so generously given their time in donating food and serving at funerals. Since we have lost so many dedicated and willing volunteers, we would like to invite anyone in the congregation to consider donating food and/or to help prepare and serve at funerals. When there is a funeral, Jan would call you and see if you are available to bring an item. She would give you a choice of what is needed that you could choose from. If you are willing to donate food or help serve at funerals, call Jan at MONTHLY MEMORY VERSE For your ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all your paths. Proverbs 5:21 Families Moving Forward offers families experiencing short term homelessness hospitality, emergency shelter and friendship as they find permanent housing. And we, at Messiah, are privileged to be a part of this ministry. For one week we host families, offering them a place to sleep, a place to eat, a place to feel safe. In order to do this, we need your help. Throughout the week, there is something for every ability: Are you a morning person? You can make and serve breakfast for our guests. Are you able to talk to anybody at any time about anything? You can be an evening host. Are you able to sleep anywhere? You can be an overnight host. Are you free for just two hours one evening? You can be an activity host. Are you unsure of what you might be able to do? Pray: for guidance on volunteering, for the volunteers throughout the week, for the families that we are hosting. If you are able to help us show our love in action that week, please stop by the FMF sign up table today. Our faithful food coordinator, Colleen O Malley, will be stepping down after this fall s hosting week and we are looking for someone who might be interested in leading the food team. This fall is the perfect time to shadow Colleen and learn all her secrets for pulling off a delicious week of food for our guests. Please contact Gretchen King ( or shop4king@gmail.com) if you might be interested 8
We will be collecting items for bags that are assembled for kids who are going into foster care. Most often, when a child has to leave a home, they are unable to take many, if any, personal belongings with them. They may be able to bring a few things with them in a TRASH bag! Journey Bags are a ministry to foster kids and families as they include a BAG, clothes, hygiene products, pajamas and a pillow for every kid to call THEIR OWN. Look for the display in the gathering space to choose an item to purchase for the collection. Thank you! Allison & Annie Mark your calendars on September 29th for the XYZ event! On this Saturday, XYZers will be cruising on Lake Minnetonka for a Fall Colors tour aboard the Steamboat Minnehaha. The Minnehaha is the historic steamboat that operated on Lake Minnetonka as part of the Twin Cities Lines street car system. This boat is the original steamer that made trips back for between Excelsior and Wayzata up to1929 when it was retired. The boat was reconditioned for operation and returned to service in The cruise is one hour long and explores the sites of Lake Minnetonka hopefully in the colors of fall. The day will include a self paid lunch before our departure. The steamboat is not handicapped accessible and does require some stepping over boat walls to get in, those with canes and walkers are welcome as long as they can handle steps with or without help. The participation limit will be 30. Check the sign up sheet on the bulletin board near the elevator for cost, ticket price $15 plus transportation. We will departure Messiah at 10 AM with expected return between 2 and 3 PM. All Aboard for a short cruise through history! 9
WOM Where did the summer go? Hopefully, you all enjoyed it to the fullest as it went by fast. September is here and kids going back to school with all their activities and Messiah members are busy with their bazaar projects. Right?? WOM will hold our first meeting on Tuesday, September 11 starting at 5:30 with a potluck dinner. It will be a busy evening voting on Bazaar proceeds and hopefully welcoming and introducing Kate Steensma to our organization (depends on her work schedule). We hope you can all join us. We will be celebrating LWML Sunday on October 7 by serving quick breads after services. The LWML convention was held in June with mission projects for our mites being voted on, officers voted in and offering totals. The LWML Fall Rally will be held at St. John s church in Elk River on Saturday, September 29 beginning with registration of $8.00 and breakfast at 8:30. Virginia Flo from Lutherans for Life, the Regional Director of MN and National Conference Director, will present at the rally. Lutherans for Life Post-Abortion Crisis Hotline Expansion is one of the mission grant proposals voted in at the convention. She will come and share on this and many of the other things Lutherans for Life is doing to share the love of Christ. Ingathering is baby items to be donated to local Pregnancy Crisis Center. WE NEED YOUR VOICE! in the choir! Please come and join us on Wednesdays from 7-8:30PM in the Sanctuary. All voices are welcome. No experience required, just a heart to praise the Lord in song! 12 Messiah MOPS is in need of childcare volunteers! What is MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers)? We are on a mission to celebrate motherhood. We build circles of women who love each other like family, because raising humans is beautiful and hard, and having each other to lean on is life-giving. That's why we connect with moms all over the world to a community of women, in their own cities, who meet together to laugh, cry and embrace the journey of being a mom. This is motherhood, and together we can change the world in all the best ways. Find out more: Messiah MOPS is unique, as we do not charge our mothers for the childcare provided each month. We believe these moms need a few precious hours off each month to join other moms in fellowship and to be cared for a time to fill their cups, support one another, and be ready to head back out into the world refreshed and recharged. This is where we need the help of volunteers - we can t do it without them! Messiah MOPS meets every second Friday of the month, from September May, at Messiah from 9:30 AM 11:30 AM. We are looking for volunteers eager to dive right in and play with our MOPS kids. From infant preschool age kiddos, there is always plenty to do. Our childcare facilities are stocked and ready all you need to do is show up. Are you interested in volunteering? Try one month? Maybe jump right in and commit to more? Contact Caitlin at caitlinjstromberg@gmail.com or to learn more. 12
