4 Marriage and Family Matter Submitted by Susan Shanahan, Marriage and Family Forum Marriage and Family Forum (MFF) continues its work to link programs and services available within the Diocese of Honolulu. The forum is a collaboration of lay associations to promote, sustain and enrich Christian Marriage and the family. Its purpose is to provide a coordination process through which the rich array of marriage and family programs can be widely and coherently made available to serve the pastoral needs of parish leaders. Mark your calendars for Thanksgiving weekend, on Saturday 26 November and be sure to attend the first annual Marriage and Family Festival. Festivities begin with Mass at 9:00 a.m., celebrated by Bishop Larry Silva, at Holy Family Parish. The festival will follow from 10:00 a.m. 2:00 p. m. Each of the Ministries will have information tables, and the day will be marked with music, activities for the children and fellowship! Brunch by Morton s Chef Liam and Velma Carstensen was Onoliscious, and the dessert competition was infested with talent! The Diocese had committed to a goal of $1500 for this year s campaign. Human Resources Director, Dara Perreira is very proud to announce that all of us raised $2, As for the dessert completion winner, Congratulations to Valery O Brien s Katsarida pho bia chocolate cake!! We had many great desserts but I guess having a chocolate cake with cockroaches did the job! Thanks again for making this event as successful as it was. Bishops Pro-Life Official Hails House Passage of Protect Life Act Submitted by Respect Life Office WASHINGTON - The Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) welcomed passage in the House of the 'Protect Life Act' (H.R. 358). Sponsored by Rep. Joseph Pitts (R-PA) and Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL) and 144 co-sponsors, the Protect Life Act would apply longstanding federal policies on abortion funding, and conscience rights on abortion, to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) passed in Late on October 13, the House passed H.R. 358 by a bipartisan vote of 251 to 172. "By passing the Protect Life Act, the House has taken an important step toward authentic health care reform that respects the dignity of all, from conception onward," Deirdre McQuade, USCCB pro-life spokeswoman, said. As Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, chairman of the bishops' Committee on Pro-Life Activities, said in his October 12 letter to Congress, the Protect Life Act "will bring PPACA into line with policies on abortion and conscience rights that have long prevailed in other federal health programs." "The Protect Life Act would help protect vulnerable children, their families and doctors in several ways," McQuade said. "It applies the Hyde amendment to PPACA so federal funds will not be used 6

7 to subsidize elective abortions, bringing this law into line with other federal health programs such as Medicaid and the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program." "The Act also helps ensure that the government will not pressure health professionals to participate in abortion against their medical judgment, moral convictions or religious beliefs," McQuade added. "Now that the House has acted, it's the Senate's turn to help make health care reform life-affirming," McQuade said. 8 When They Come Home: Ways to Welcome Returning Catholics by LaNave and Melanie Rigney Submitted by Sharon Chiarucci, Office for Parish Resources The presenters of the recent Paulist Evangelization Ministries webinar: With a Shepherd s Heart: How to Welcome Returning Catholics spoke from personal experience of being away and coming home to the Catholic Church. These are a few suggestions from their presentation: We are surrounded by inactive Catholics. The strongest message we can give is the way we live our lives: refraining from gossip, being a good Samaritan in the neighborhood, being willing to listen to challenging questions and answering them in a pastoral rather than dogmatic way. Talk about the things we do: helping with the parish food pantry, helping to rehab public housing, the annual picnic or dinner dance or fashion show. Invite people to these events. It may open the door to invitations to Mass. Participate in ecumenical activities. If former Catholics are attending another Christian church, find out how that church supports their faith, their lives, and their spirituality. We might learn something. We never know why someone new is in church. Smile, introduce yourself to people you don t know. Invite and/or visit with strangers during hospitality time. Ushers and greeters could have parish brochures ready to give to newcomers along with a friendly welcome and invitation to coffee after Mass. Secretaries, faith formation personnel, all parish staff can find opportunities to expand conversations with parents who bring children for sacraments or individuals seeking information. Have flyers for parish activities handy to give them. Priests need to be available to returning Catholics for conversation. It helps to have one parishioner who is willing to be the welcoming person for anyone interested in talking more about returning. That person s contact information should be in the bulletin, on the parish website. Use major events: weddings, funerals, Christmas, Easter, and Ash Wednesday to welcome everyone and invite them to come back soon. Provide the contact information for parish greeters and brochures about parish activities. Returning people want to talk about their experiences with their faith and they want to hear about others experiences. Programs for returning Catholics should provide opportunities for this sharing before getting into dogma. Finally: the presenters suggested that having a stronger connection with others, such as in small faith sharing groups, might have kept them connected to the church. 8

10 Couples for Christ Ministry Invitation Submitted by Vinya Manianglung, Couples for Christ Singles for Christ (SFC) in affiliation with Couples for Christ (CFC) has started evangelization efforts in the Honolulu area by establishing a relationship with the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa. To become a part of this ministry, a person has to complete Christian Life Program (CLP) training. This program is composed of 10 to 13 meetings that discuss the Christian faith and slowly integrate the participant into the community. Training is conducted twice a year. They started having bible studies and fellowships in their homes. It caught on with a lot of families, and since the family is also made up of not just parents, sub-ministries also took shape in the form of Handmaids of the Lord & Servants of the Lord (widowed, divorced or separated individuals), Singles for Christ (Young Adults), the CFC-Youth (youth), Kids for Christ (and kids). Meeting in private homes makes the home an extension of the church and is a step further in bringing God into our lives. The Couples for Christ community is based at Immaculate Conception Church in Ewa Beach. It is the primary location for our assemblies, teaching nights and special events. The CFC ministry is also a part of the Marriage and Family Forum. Singles for Christ and CFC-Youth are very active members of the faith, conducting evangelical missions and participating in diocesan events. Couples for Christ is also a global community recognized by the Vatican. 10
