10 Many, many blessings to you and to all whom you serve! Catholic Charities Hawai i on Facebook From Aileen Shin, Director of Development, Catholic Charities Hawai i Catholic Charities Hawai i is now on facebook! This is an exciting new chapter for us as we look at new ways to share our agency s good work with the community and beyond. I know for some there may be a bit of hesitation regarding the use of social media for our agency. Rest assured, we are monitoring the site daily and will evaluate its effectiveness. We have worked closely with Becker Communications to set up the page and they are checking the postings daily and will let us know if there are any issues to address. We are already on You Tube so this is just another tool to inform and gather support. The link will go directly to the Facebook page. Support Needed for Gulf Coast Oil Spill Recovery From Fr. Larry Snyder, President, Catholic Charities USA Dear Friends: The Gulf Coast oil spill is the worst environmental disaster of our times. The economic toll is equally devastating. We need your support to help our neighbors recover from this tragedy that has left them out of work, hungry, homeless, and

11 emotionally scarred. Through your past generous financial support, you have enabled Catholic Charities to provide emergency lifesustaining assistance to help families and communities affected by disasters. Please help once again. This silent disaster has dramatically increased the emotional and mental health burden of families and individuals. Livelihoods of those who rely upon the Gulf have been halted; their futures are uncertain. The disaster struck at a time when many were still reeling from both the aftermath of the 2005 and 2008 hurricane seasons and the economic recession of Those who struggle in poverty are the first to suffer during an economic recession. A disaster makes it even worse. Catholic Charities needs your support to help families put food on the table, keep a roof over their heads, deal with emotional strain, and develop long-term plans for economic security. Please support Catholic Charities as it works to serve the least among us, especially the poor, vulnerable, and marginalized. Visit our Disaster Response Web site for local stories. Watch Fr. Snyder's as he testifies on Capitol Hill on the urgent need for charitable giving. read more This is a disaster that won t go away after the leak is successfully capped. It will be years, even a decade, before the habitat a source of bountiful food and gainful employment is safely restored. Please make a donation today to help the Catholic Charities network respond to this immense economic disaster. Your gift will help Catholic Charities USA provide relief grants for local agencies and develop a coordinated and strategic response plan in the Gulf community. Cross International Catholic Outreach From Rev. Marvin J. Samiano, Mission Appeal Coordinator The Mission Appeal Office of the Diocese has received calls from parishes regarding Cross International Catholic Outreach stating that a representative from the organization has contacted them about doing an appeal in their parishes, and stating that I have given them permission to come into the Diocese. This is not entirely true. While Cross International does do wonderful work (URL: they are not, properly speaking, a mission appeal society. As such, this office does not regulate their appeals. What this office did tell Cross International is that since they are not a mission appeal, they do not

12 fall under the auspices of this office. They are free to contact parishes, who have the right to say yes or no to their presence in the parish. They would come and give a talk (and provide supply help) based upon the decision of the pastor. Some parishes in the Diocese have, in the past, used their services, and found them to be inspirational. Funds are collected at these talks, but since they are not governed by the mission appeal policy, they do not go through the diocesan finance office, but rather straight to the organization. Pastors are free to accept or not accept their request to come into their parish. Having a missionary from Cross International come to your parish does not fulfill the parish s responsibility for their annual mission appeal. If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Mission Appeals From Fr.
