1 Diocese of Honolulu e-newsletter Tuesday of the 14th Week in Ordinary Time (V: 28) July 10, 2012 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ (by grace you have been saved), raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the havens in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so no one may boast. For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them. 2 Word of Life Intercessions for Life July 15, 2012 Submitted by Deacon Walter Yoshimitsu, Chancellor July 15, 2012 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time For those whose days on earth are drawing to a close: That they may be welcomed into the joys of eternal life in heaven; We pray to the Lord: Bulletin Brief For her part, the Church in the United States is called, in season and out of season, to proclaim a Gospel which not only proposes unchanging moral truths but proposes them precisely as the key to human happiness and social prospering (cf. Gaudium et Spes, 10). To the extent that some current cultural trends contain elements that would curtail the proclamation of these truths, whether constricting it within the limits of a merely scientific rationality, or suppressing it in the name of political power or majority rule, they represent a threat not just to Christian faith, but also to humanity itself and to the deepest truth about our being and ultimate vocation, our relationship to God. ~Pope Benedict XVI, To the Bishops of the United States of America on their ad limina Visit, January 19, May God Grant Eternal Rest and Peace Memorandum from the Office of the Bishop Jayne Mondoy, diocesan director, Office of Religious Education, lost her brother, Robert Terry Ragasa, on Saturday, July 7 at his home in Bonney Lake, Washington after a yearlong battle with cancer. 5 St. Francis Healthcare System Looking for Garage Sale Volunteers Submitted by Nathan Hokama, St. Francis Healthcare Foundation of Hawaii St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii Preparing West Oahu Hospital for Sale; Volunteers Needed to Stage Equipment for Garage Sale St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii is preparing to sell its West Oahu hospital and is holding a garage sale at the Ewa campus on Saturday, July 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers from the community are needed to help stage excess hospital equipment on Saturday, July 14, beginning at 8:30 a.m., and to help on the day of the garage sale. We re at an exciting point as we move forward in carrying on the tradition of compassion and caring established by Saint Marianne Cope in the Islands 130 years ago, said Jerry Correa, President and Chief Executive Officer of St. Francis Healthcare System. Preparing the West Oahu hospital for sale is one of our top priorities in the next few months. On Saturday, June 30, more than 50 Hawaiian Electric Company employees and their families volunteered to help with inventory and to stage items, including office chairs, tables, desks, file cabinets, bookshelves, computer tables, microwave ovens, large and small refrigerators, and more for the upcoming garage sale. However, more volunteers are needed to prepare for the July garage sale as well as to begin preparing for an auction at St. Francis Healthcare System s Liliha campus that will be held in September If you or your group would like to do a community service project and help with preparing the hospital to eventually reopen, contact Patty Martin, Director of Volunteer Programs for St. Francis Healthcare System, at (808) or pmartin@stfrancishawaii.org. Background St. Francis Healthcare System sold the hospitals to Hawaii Medical Center in January Hawaii Medical Center subsequently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization twice; the first time in August 2008, and again in June Hawaii Medical Center began to wind down the hospital operations at the two campuses in Liliha and Ewa, starting with the closure of its emergency departments in December Hawaii Medical Center officially closed at the end of last year. 5 The legal ownership transfer of the West Oahu hospital assets back to St. Francis officially occurred in May Both St. Francis and Queen s signed a letter of intent that month for Queen s to explore the possibility of acquiring and reopening the West Oahu hospital, including an emergency room. Since then, St. Francis employees and volunteers have spent more than 800 hours to clear out and take inventory of the assets in the West Oahu facility to potentially sell the West Oahu hospital assets to The Queen s Health Systems. Hawaiian Electric Company volunteers Duane Ogata, Wanya Ogata, Gayna Fujieki, and Leroy Chincio help with the packing up medical records at the West Oahu hospital that was returned back to St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii in May 2012.

12 St. Francis Healthcare Foundation of Hawaii Awarded $5.3 Million Grant Submitted by Nathan Hokama, St. Francis Healthcare Foundation of Hawaii FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE St. Francis Healthcare Foundation of Hawaii Awarded $5.3 Million Grant for Three-Year Telehealth Project Admissions to hospitals and emergency room visits can be costly for patients and create emotional turmoil for families. With healthcare reform, patient readmissions can also be costly for hospitals. The good news: a newly funded local project is seeking to lower the likelihood of these occurrences to enhance the quality of life for Hawaii s patients. Based on the track record of previous projects that were led by veteran medical researcher Steven Berman, MD, this new project is very promising. St. Francis Healthcare Foundation of Hawaii has been awarded $5,299,706 for a three-year telehealth project from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to monitor high-risk patients with complex health needs at home to prevent hospitalizations and emergency room visits. The project is one of three in the state selected to receive funding from the Health Care Innovation Award program, established under the Affordable Care Act. The program encourages the development of new delivery or payment models to improve access to quality care and patient outcomes, while lowering healthcare costs. Hawaii received a total of $23 million in Health Care Innovation Award grants. We re always looking for new, innovative ways to help Hawaii s elders and those with chronic conditions, so this project is important to St. Francis Healthcare System as a home and community based provider, said Sister William Marie Eleniki, OSF, President of the St. Francis Healthcare Foundation of Hawaii. We re delighted to be continuing our long-standing partnership with Dr. Berman. Dr. Berman brings extensive experience in research and clinical care for Hawaii s vulnerable populations. He currently serves as Principal Director of H.O.P.E. Project (Home Outreach Program for Eldercare) in collaboration with the St. Francis Healthcare Foundation, and prior to that served as served as Principal Investigator for a Renal Database Project with St. Francis Medical Center from 2001 to Dr. Berman also served as Director of Infection Control and Epidemiology for Saint Francis Medical Center from 1994 to He also received grants for two other major projects for which he served as Principal Investigator. One project involved a study of dialysis patients to predict the risk of hospitalization and the other assessed the impact on the economic and quality of life of high-risk patients and their caregivers using remote technologies, the later of which is a four-year project that will be completed this year. We ve been able to demonstrate that integrating technology with clinical care is empowering for patients as they take ownership of their own health and change their behaviors to reduce the number of hospitalizations and emergency room visits, Dr. Berman said. We re building upon our pilot project that worked with highrisk dialysis patients and are excited to be taking our research to a new level. In past studies led by Dr. Berman, hospitalizations and emergency room visits dropped by 40 percent in the telehealth intervention group compared to a control group. Dr. Berman hopes to take this same methodology 12

13 and model of care and replicate the results with two other high-risk groups: outpatients with complex health needs and patients discharged from hospitals who have been diagnosed with heart failure, pneumonia or acute myocardial infarction. The program involves a physician-directed plan of care that includes having the patients monitor their blood pressure or blood glucose levels on a daily basis. These measurements are uploaded automatically via telehealth equipment and reviewed by a nurse. If there are any measurements that are outside of the normal range, a nurse will contact the patient to arrange for a consultation with the physician. This allows immediate intervention rather than waiting for a patient s next scheduled office visit or having a patient show up in a hospital emergency room. The project is estimated to save about $10.4 million in health care costs over the three-year period. For this new project, Dr. Berman is partnering with the Hawaii Medical Service Association (HMSA), which covers more than 600,000 lives, including 150,000 Medicare Advantage subscribers and Medicaid patients, and the Hawaii State Health System Corporation (HSHSC), the state s hospital system that includes rural, underserved areas of Oahu and the neighbor islands, and whose patient base is composed of about 60 percent Medicare and Medicaid patients. If you would like to learn more about this project, call Tamami Harada, Research Administrative Assistant at (808) or the St. Francis Healthcare Foundation at # # # About St. Francis Healthcare Foundation of Hawaii St. Francis Healthcare Foundation of Hawaii, established in 1984 as a subsidiary of St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii, raises funds, acquires and holds assets, and provides community education that supports the activities of the System s subsidiaries.
