WARNING! Do not give out personal information, especially SS# From the Office of the Bishop It has come to our attention that several people within the Diocese of Honolulu have received a letter promising possible benefits from a trust fund and asking for the recipient s personal information, including Social Security number. The legitimacy of this letter needs to be verified, and unless it is, recipients should be very careful about sharing their personal information, especially their Social Security Number. Word of Life Intercessions for Life August 14, 2011 From Deacon Walter Yoshimitsu, Chancellor August 14 th Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time For those burdened with loneliness, that God will place in their lives someone to take that burden away. We pray to the Lord: Bulletin Brief In this media age when our human contacts are more often via Facebook, and texting, blogs and s the ability to form lasting human and spiritual relationships, face-to-face, seems to be diminishing. I wonder if the life giving spring of the Sacrament of Marriage is not the real LIVE lifegiving witness and example of married couples in all stages of life whether in the family of the church or in the community of our daily life. Real marriages and real moments in couples and family life are not found in a text book, in the pages of theological and catechetical and canonical journals even as important as they must be to us. Real examples and real models of faith are Incarnational when our beliefs become reflected in our lives by examples of faith, hope, and love, sometimes against the most impossible situations. ~ Bishop Kevin W. Vann, Bishop of Fort Worth, The Sacrament of Marriage: A Great Untapped Life-Sprint at the Family Life Ministry Conference in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, 2 April September 3-4, 2011 National Collection for The Catholic University of America From John Garvey, President, The Catholic University of America Bulletin Announcement The Catholic University of America is the national university of the Catholic Church in the United States, located in Washington, D.C. It provides an academically rigorous education guided by Catholic intellectual tradition to nearly 7,000 students every year. Labor Day Weekend is the National 2

Submitted by Elina Simon, Executive Assistant to the Vicar General Remember this headline? HOPE Services Hawaii CLICK FOR A CAUSE! It ran in the enews for three weeks back in May. So, being curious and eager to support a good cause in an economy that leaves very little leftover in my pocketbook, I downloaded the GoodSearch - HOPE Services Hawaii (Hilo HI) toolbar. I recently checked my stats and was THRILLED to discover that I have raised $25.78 for HOPE Services just by searching the internet and $43.01 from internet shopping for a total of $68.79 donated! If there is an easier way to give, I can t imagine it. Ah, but wait A quick check of the facts with HOPE Services CEO, Brandee Menino, revealed that the total reflected was not generated solely by me, but from the collective effort of everyone who uses the search engine on behalf of HOPE Services. I don t know how many people are involved, and $68.79 doesn t seem like much, but I am undaunted. INTERNET SURFERS AND SHOPPERS, WE CAN DO BETTER! Participating organizations receive a check once a year in December for the combined funds earned between October 1 through September 30 on GoodSearch and GoodShop. So, this December, maybe HOPE Services receives a check for $100. Then next year, with more surf/shoppers, they might get a check for $1,000? Then, maybe just maybe, with lots of hope, prayers and internet searches, in 5 years the check could be $5,000? Add the HOPE Services Hawaii (Hilo HI) toolbar at: Every little click helps. Life Issues Forum Support Life, However Conceived From the Respect Life Office Recently a mother who conceived her child through in vitro fertilization (IVF) wrote to a Washington Post advice column. Her parents objected to the immoral manner of their grandchild s conception -- so they decided to have nothing to do with the baby, a decision that was both hurtful and troubling. To be sure, the grandparents were not wrong to object to this technology. Creating and manipulating new life in a laboratory abuses the cherished and sacred nature of sex between husband and wife, causes the deaths of multiple embryos, and treats newly conceived children as objects. A child should be conceived through loving sex open to cooperating with God in creating new life. God allows husband and wife to co-create with Him, 5

resulting in a family that supports the child and builds up a culture of life. So the Church urges couples struggling to conceive to learn about morally acceptable treatments that assist a couple s sexual union in being able to conceive a baby. It offers support and guidance to couples in bearing the cross of infertility, and in considering the possibility of adoption. But turning our backs on a child because of the way he or she was conceived is no part of the Christian message. No child is morally responsible for the way he or she came to be and that child is still a beautiful gift from God. Consider the tragic situation of a child conceived in rape or incest. Aborting that child only answers violence and injustice with even greater violence and injustice. It cannot erase the rape, and it can magnify the woman s pain. A mother nurturing this child to birth deserves support and encouragement. She needs support in making the courageous decision whether or not to make an adoption plan. A child is always a great good in the eyes of God, and a source of joy and love to his or her biological or adoptive family. No matter how a baby was conceived, Catholics are called to witness to the special and unrepeatable gift of every new life. In The Gospel of Life, Blessed John Paul II writes: Life is always a good. The life which God gives man is quite different from the life of all other living creatures, inasmuch as man is a manifestation of God in the world, a sign of his presence, a trace of his glory. Expectant mothers in the most challenging and difficult situations are in special need of others who will accept and love them, be a life-affirming presence, and witness to God s gift of new life growing within them. Consider that Our Lord Himself was conceived in the womb of a poor unwed mother, in circumstances that seemed shameful. Yet Joseph remained open to hear and follow God s guidance. He risked everything to serve and protect Mary as a loving husband, and to adopt Jesus as His earthly father. Joseph is a loving and courageous example of respecting God s gift of life, even in situations which challenge the earthly and human perspectives of those already born. The example and courage of Joseph should inspire many to provide lifeaffirming prayers, financial assistance, and emotional support to women and children in need. To learn more about the bishops pro-life activities, go to Previous Events/Announcements Catholic Relief Services Responds to Drought in East Africa From Office of the Bishop A drought in East Africa, complicated by political instability in Somalia, has led to desperate conditions for millions of people. Your Church is responding through Catholic Relief Services that 6

has worked in the region for decades. Many CRS projects that you have supported over the years have made communities better able to withstand this drought, alleviating their suffering. But many are still suffering, including Somalis who live beyond the reach of humanitarian aid and are fleeing to neighboring countries seeking help. CRS is responding to their needs. We ask that you show your solidarity with those who are suffering in East Africa with your prayers and support. Prayer resources and more information are available at Obituaries From the Office of the Bishop Please pray for the peaceful and happy repose for the souls of: Marie Nelson - Mother of Deacon Ron Nelson, passed away in July 2011 and was buried in Minnesota. An opportunity for those within our community with discerning hearts to know and love and serve God s plan; thereby spreading the grace of God to these distressed young people. Alicia Alicia is a 13 year old female of Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Puerto Rican and African American decent. She is a special education student who loves 7

School. She loves music and she loves to read to. She is unable to speak and unable to walk or take care of her needs. She does have a comfortable new wheelchair. She has had some problems with her spine curving and has had surgery for this. She understands English and she enjoys going for walks outside and to be take for automobile rides. Department of Human Services (DHS) in Hawaii has permanent custody of Alicia and she is legally free for adoption. Christy Christy is an eight year old female of Hawaiian and Filipino ancestry. She is a friendly and active young girl. She enjoys school and different activities such as reading, dancing hula and arts and crafts. She has had a difficult past and has challenging behaviors due to her early trauma. She needs a home where she is the only child and requires structure, consistency and nurturance. The family must be patient, understanding and willing to commit to Christy realizing that she struggles to make sense of her feelings and emotions. She has made great strides in her foster home and now needs a permanent home and family in order to continue her progress. She is truly a smart, beautiful, sensitive, creative and loving young girl. DHS has permanent custody of this young girl. Jamie is a 13 year old girl in need of an adoptive family that can embrace her Jamie unique qualities. She is of Caucasian decent and experiences symptoms of Asperger s Disorder. She is shy when you first meet her, but is very friendly. She has an excellent memory and enjoys meeting new people. Her interests include arts and crafts, reading, drama, dancing and singing. Like a typical teenage girl, she loves expressing her individuality through clothes and make up. Jamie s favorite colors are pink and black. Her strengths include her academic abilities and goals for the future. She averages A s and B s in school and has aspirations of going to college. Some challenges that she faces are frustration and anger due to her feelings of not being understood. Jamie needs a family that is able to give her one-on-one attention and will support her through future decisions that need to be made in her life. A single parent or family without young children that can provide patience and a structured environment would best meet her needs. 10 Hospital Ministry Seeks Eucharistic Ministers From Fr. Teddy Gaquit, Hospital Ministry, Director/Chaplain Are you a Eucharistic Minister with a couple of hours to spare each week? If so, the Hospital Ministry needs your help. Volunteers are in short supply, especially those who can give Holy Communion to a sick patient. The success of our ministry in local area hospitals lies directly with our volunteers. Without these valuable servants, the priests in Hospital Ministry would struggle to meet the needs of Catholic patients. After a short training session, Eucharistic Minister volunteers can offer their services to the Lord through Hospital Ministry. If interested, please contact Fr. Teddy Gaquit (ph ) or Sr. Judy (ph ). IRS Raises Standard Mileage Rate for Second Half of 2011 From the Finance Office In response to rising gasoline prices, the IRS has raised the standard mileage rate for business use of an automobile from 51 cents per mile to 55.5 cents per mile, effective July 1. The medical and moving 10

standard mileage rate increased to 23.5 cents per mile, also on July 1. The new optional standard mileage rates will apply until superseded by future guidance and can be used by taxpayers to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile. Alternatively, taxpayers can instead use their actual costs, but must maintain adequate records and be able to substantiate their expenses. The standard mileage rate for services to charitable organizations is set by statute at 14 cents per mile and remains unchanged. Life Issues Forum The High Costs of Free Birth Control From the Respect Life Office On July 21, the health news site Natural Society ( featured these breaking news headlines: Newer Birth Control Pill Linked to Higher Risk of Blood Clots ; Birth Control Increases Risk of Contracting, Transmitting HIV ; and finally, Medical Panel Pushes for Free Birth Control for Women. Hmm, one might ask, who was on this medical panel? Dr. Kevorkian? But no, it was the Institute of Medicine (IOM), advising the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on preventive services for women to mandate in virtually all private health plans under the new health care reform act. HHS says it delegated this task to the IOM so people would see the outcome as based on science rather than politics. But IOM s report seems based less on science than on the ideology of authors who share Planned Parenthood s (PP) view of sex and procreation, several of whom have served on the boards of PP affiliates and other pro-abortion organizations. The report says enhanced access to contraception will reduce abortions, though there is ample evidence against that claim (see In fact, the panel recommends that health plans must cover all drugs approved by the FDA as prescription contraceptives including the newly approved emergency contraceptive called Ella, which like RU-486 can cause abortion weeks into pregnancy. When asked about a conscience exemption for those who have a moral or religious objection to this, an IOM spokesperson said it wasn t her panel s job to take account of other people s personal feelings. Many fear HHS will take the same approach. Secular news media Time, U.S. News, USA Today, L.A. Times obediently repeated the panel s public relations message that it is offering free birth control for women. That message is nonsense. Currently women who want birth control coverage pay for it through their premiums, and sometimes also have a co-pay or out-of-pocket expense. Under the new mandate they will still pay for it, but the cost will be buried in the overall premium and everyone else, including churches and other religious employers as well as individual Catholics, will be forced to pay for it in their 11

premiums too, so payments coerced from those who object will make birth control coverage a bit cheaper for those who want it. And what about the cost in women s lives from those blood clots and cases of AIDS? Researchers have known about both problems for years. In 2005, for example, a study funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control noted: The positive link between pill use and HIV infection was supported by a meta-analysis of 28 studies, including seven prospective studies. Most American women haven t been told this. Ironically, other preventive services recommended by the IOM includes screening for sexually transmitted diseases. But why would you mandate something that can cause what the other services on your list seek to prevent? The other big cost, of course, is the cost to freedom of religion and respect for conscience. Though not alone in its view, the Catholic Church has long been prophetic and counter-cultural in warning that artificial contraception and sterilization do not enhance women s well-being. No American, of course, is required by law to believe that teaching. But should the government, in the name of all Americans, now coerce even the Church s institutions into acting on the opposite view -- when the evidence supporting its message is stronger than ever?
