Diocese of Honolulu e-newsletter Tuesday of the 30th Week of Ordinary Time (IV: 95) October 26, 2010 You, my sheep, you are the sheep of my pasture, and I am your God, says the Lord GOD. (Ezekiel 34:31) [All articles and pictures may be copied and used in parish/school bulletins and newsletters.] To all priests and deacons of the Diocese of Honolulu: I request that the following announcement be made at all the Masses this coming weekend, October Thank you! Dear Parishioners: We Catholics have a mission: to proclaim the good news of Jesus, who came to announce the Kingdom of God. It is a kingdom where love reigns, even in difficult circumstances. Our faith embraces many values, including the sanctity of human life, the sacredness of God s plan for marriage and family, economic justice for all, and freedom to practice our faith not just as a private matter but as a contribution to the welfare of the entire community. The leaders we elect are extremely important, so I urge every Catholic who is eligible to vote to do so in this week s general election. Let this sacrifice of your time be a pleasing offering to God. Let us always pray for our community and our civic leaders. + Bishop Larry Silva Hour of Anthony Rapozo's Ordination
From Bishop Larry Silva There seems to have been some confusion about the hour of Anthony Rapozo s deacon ordination on Thursday, December 16. Some sources said it was to be at 7:00 p.m. and others at 6:00 p.m. After conferring with Anthony Rapozo, Fr. Bill Shannon, and Fr. Peter Dumag, I want to announce that the ordination will be at 6:00 p.m. Please correct any notice that says (said) otherwise. Employees Right to Vote From Dara Perreira, Human Resources Director Tuesday, November 2 nd, is Election Day. Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. If you are scheduled work during polling times and do not have two consecutive hours off (excluding lunch periods) during these times to vote, Hawaii law allows you to take up to two hours of paid time off for the purpose of voting. The two hours should be taken with supervisor approval to insure appropriate coverage for church or school operations. If you need to request time off to vote, please notify your supervisor at least a day prior to Election Day to manage scheduling. If you will be requesting time off to vote, please provide your voters receipt to your supervisor to justify the paid time off in payroll processing. Example #1: Employee is scheduled from 8:00-3:00 p.m. The employee has at least 2 consecutive hours off after work during polling times (3:00 6:00). The employee would not be eligible for paid time off. Example #2: Employee is scheduled from 8:00 5:00 p.m. The employee does not have 2 consecutive hours off during polling times to vote. The employee is eligible for 2 consecutive hours of paid time (not including lunch). PARISH PLANNING AND BUILDING COMMITTEE WORK SHOP AND CONFERENCE From Vince A. Vernay, Facilities Services Manager
In support of the Diocesan Road Map and the Grateful Hearts Campaign, the Diocesan Planning and Building Commission is planning a one day Work Shop/Conference for respective Parish Planning and Building Committee Chairs and Diocesan School Facility Maintenance Managers. The Work Shop/Conference is scheduled for Saturday, December 4 th, 8:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The location of the Work Shop/Conference is St. Stephen s Diocesan Center 2nd floor, Pali View Conference room, the Bishops Library for vendor displays, the Chapel for Mass and the dining room for lunch. For Neighbor Island participants, the Diocesan Planning and Building Commission will support, from each Neighbor Island parish and Neighbor Island diocesan school the cost of one airline round trip ticket and rent a-car for the PPBC chair or his/her designated PPBC representative as well as the Diocesan School Maintenance Manager. Carpooling with other participants is encouraged. The Purpose of the Work Shop/Conference is to improve communications, review the diocesan Maintenance and Repair Guidelines and network with vendors who support the parishes with special products, services and pricing. Our primary focus is to review the Project Planning Process, along with Requests for Proposal, Scope of Work development, invitations to bid, bidder selection and project supervision. The attending vendors will provide a short presentation about their products and services as well as have display booths for participants to visit before and after lunch. The parish may send others to the conference; however, diocesan support is only extended to the PPBC Chair or his/her designated representative and one Diocesan School Facility Maintenance Manager. Parish school Maintenance Managers are encouraged to attend subject to the approval of the Pastor. Update on Typhoon Megi Iwie Tamashiro, Diocesan Director, Catholic Relief Services INTERESTED IN PROVIDING FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO CRS FOR TYPHOON MEGI DISASTER RELIEF? Parishioners may contribute either by going to the Catholic Relief Services website at and make an on-line donation OR parishes may take up a special collection if they choose to do so. Our Diocesan Finance Office provides the following guidance: For those writing a check, make checks payable to the parish. The parish is to total all donations designated for Typhoon Megi Relief then make one check payable to the Roman Catholic Church in the State of Hawaii and send to the Diocesan Finance Office, ATTN: Marvin Choy. The Diocese will total all parish donations for Typhoon Megi and send one check on behalf of the Diocese of Honolulu to the National CRS office in Baltimore, MD. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions regarding CRS or relief efforts. I will be sure to keep you updated as information becomes available as conditions progress in the Philippines. CRS Update on Typhoon Megi in the Philippines On Monday, October 18th, Megi, a category 5 typhoon, slammed into the Philippines. It was the strongest storm this year with winds in excess of 175 mph. The typhoon damaged houses, infrastructure and crops. The super typhoon, called Juan in the Philippines and Megi abroad, hit northeast of the large Philippine island of Luzon. The municipalities of Dinapigue, Divilacan, San Mariano, and Santa Maria in Isabela
Province were directly along the typhoon s track and are believed to have suffered severe damage. Crop damage is a concern for northern Luzon's impoverished farmers. "The wind has become very strong now," said Father Val Dimoc on Monday from the mountainous Cordillera region. "Upland rice farmers who planted in early July were about to harvest, but their crops have been blown down by the wind." CRS is working with local dioceses and Caritas Philippines to respond to the crisis. Arnaldo Arcadia, Emergency Program Manager for CRS, was at a parish outside the city of Baguio during a bad point in Monday's storm. "We took refuge in the parish when the winds were strong and the rain was battering down," he says. He and CRS partners were eventually able to return to the city. Arnaldo is in Baguio City preparing to conduct damage assessments. Information collection may take two or three days. CRS plans to support local dioceses as they help storm victims. The Church has many active social action centers in the region that are mobilizing aid. CRS has worked in the Philippines since 1945, assisting those in need without regard to race or creed. For more information on our programming in the Philippines and our emergency efforts, visit: Thank you for your prayers and action to help the people of the Philippines. Please share this with other Catholics interested in responding to the Philippines typhoon emergency effort. Prayer and Petition for the Philippines God of Creation, Please be with all of our sisters and brothers that are suffering around the world as a result of war and natural disaster. We lift up our Filipino sisters and brothers who have suffered the largest typhoon in more than four years. Comfort those separated from their families and loved ones. Bless the relief workers as they try to reach the thousands that fled as a result of the typhoon. Be with the relief workers as they work with the families that were prepared for harvest, especially as they may learn of the destruction of their crops. Lord, help us to respond to the needs of our brothers and sisters in the coming days. Foster in us a greater sense of solidarity, so that we assist as needed, beyond our excess. We ask this through your son Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.
CCHD Bulletin Announcements Deacon Lauren Wong, Diocesan Director, Catholic Campaign for Human Development As we prepare for the upcoming Catholic Campaign for Human Development s (CCHD) Annual Campaign, please include these blurbs in your weekly bulletin, something brief about the important work and mission of CCHD. WEEK ONE: October 30, 31 Fight Poverty in America. Defend Human Dignity. The poverty rate in American increased between 2007 and 2008 (the latest year for which we have data) when nearly 40 million Americans lived in poverty. Jobs were lost, incomes dropped, savings dwindled, and families struggled to keep their heads above water. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) funds programs in communities across the United States where people living in poverty join together to identify problems, make decisions, and find ways to improve their lives and neighborhoods. Please visit to read more details of CCHD s efforts to break the cycle of poverty in your community and across the country. WEEK TWO: November 6, 7 The Catholic Campaign for Human Development carries out Jesus mission to bring glad tidings to the poor./ to proclaim liberty to captives/and recovery of sight to the blind,/ to let the oppressed go free (Lk 4:18) CCHD is a complement to, and not a substitute for, our other efforts to address poverty such as Catholic Schools, Catholic Charities, parish efforts, etc. It is a unique investment in the efforts of the poor themselves to improve their lives and communities. WEEK THREE: November 13, 14 The Catholic Campaign for Human Development carries out Jesus mission to bring glad tidings to the poor./ to proclaim liberty to captives/and recovery of sight to the blind,/ to let the oppressed go free (Lk 4:18) CCHD is a national commitment by our Bishops Conference to address poverty and its causes. Local efforts are essential, but not an alternative to what we do together as the USCCB to work on poverty. 25% of the collection stays in our Diocese to fund local projects. WEEK FOUR: November 20, 21 The Catholic Campaign for Human Development carries out Jesus mission to bring glad tidings to the poor./ to proclaim liberty to captives/and recovery of sight to the blind,/ to let the oppressed go free (Lk 4:18)
CCHD has done impressive work in our Diocese throughout the years. It is making a difference. CCHD is an example of our priority on the life and dignity of the human person. Two locally funded projects who share this same priority are FACE Maui (Faith Action for Community Equity) and ROC Kalihi (Restoring Our Community). The membership of FACE includes local churches and the Local 5 Union and their current focus issues include Affordable Housing, Healthcare and Immigration Policy Reform. Currently, six Catholic parishes are participating members of FACE Maui. ROC Kalihi is a newer group, comprised of Kalihi Valley residents young and old, to include parishioners of Our Lady of the Mount. Their common mission is to repair their community by ridding it of drugs, trash and graffiti thereby restoring Kalihi Valley to what it was back in the day.
