1 Diocese of Honolulu e-newsletter Tuesday, Third Week in Ordinary Time (V: 4) Feast of the Conversion of Paul, Apostle January 25, 2011 I am grateful to him who has strengthened me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he considered me trustworthy in appointing me to the ministry. I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and an arrogant man, but I have been mercifully treated because I acted out of ignorance in my unbelief. 3 Mother Marianne Statue Dedication to Air on Olelo From Cheryl Tamura, Development & Communications Director, St. Francis Healthcare Foundation of Hawaii Last year s dedication of the Mother Marianne Cope statue at Kewalo Basin Park was a very joyous event. In celebration of the Feast Day of Blessed Marianne Cope, Tribute to a Servant, the video capturing last year s dedication was re-aired this past Sunday, Jan. 23 on Channel 49. If you missed the program, you have two more opportunities to watch on Channel 49: Sunday, January 30 at 10:00 pm Monday, January 31 at 10:30 pm The charity of the good knows no creed and is confined to no one place. Blessed Mother Marianne Cope (1870 s) Holy Father s Prayer Intentions for February 2011 From The Vatican General Intention: That the family may be respected by all in its identity and that its irreplaceable contribution to all of society is recognized. Missionary Intention: That in the mission territories where the struggle against disease is most urgent, Christian communities may witness to the presence of Christ to those who suffer. Word of Life Intercessions for Life - February 2011 From Deacon Walter Yoshimitsu, Chancellor February 6 th Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time For those who are hungry, oppressed, or homeless: Teach us to care for them so they may experience the warmth of God s love; We pray to the Lord: Bulletin Brief: The Incarnation reveals to us, with intense light and in a surprising way, that every human life has a very lofty and incomparable dignity. ~Pope Benedict XVI, Homily, Vigil for All Nascent Human Life, Nov. 27,

4 February 13 th Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time For scientist and doctors: May God guide their work, so that it always contributes to the well-being of the person And never involves the manipulation or destruction of human lives; We pray to the Lord: Bulletin Brief: In comparison with all the other living beings that populate the earth, man has an unmistakable originality. He is presented as the one unique being, endowed with intelligence and free will, as well as consisting of material reality. He lives simultaneously and inseparably in both the spiritual and the corporal dimension. We are therefore spirit, soul and body. We are part of this world; tied to the possibilities and limitations of our material condition, while at the same time we are open to an infinite horizon, able to converse with God and to welcome him within us. We are active in earthly realities and through them we are able to perceive God s presence and to reach out to him, Truth, Goodness and absolute Beauty. We savor fragments of life and happiness and yearn for complete fulfillment. ~Pope Benedict XVI, Homily, Vigil for All Nascent Human Life, Nov. 27, 2010 Parish RSVP for Webinar Training on GET Protection Act From Lisa Sakamoto, Diocesan Finance Officer, Finance Office As mentioned in last week s Enews, for those individuals who are responsible for your parish s financial recordkeeping, please RSVP to Brendan Porick in the Office of the Bishop at bporick@rcchawaii.org or at by January 28 th. Catholic Men s Fellowship of Honolulu Meets Feb. 2 From Ron Gochenouer, Founder, CMF of Honolulu As iron sharpens iron so one man sharpens another. (Proverbs 27:17) The Catholic Men s Fellowship (CMF) of Honolulu offers Catholic Christian men the opportunity to share their faith and love for Christ through prayer and fellowship. We gather in Christ s presence to share our experience, strength and hope, and prayerfully support one another in an atmosphere of trust and confidentiality. CMF is comprised of Catholic fathers, husbands, and single men who get together to discuss aspects of their faith in God, and discuss how to apply their faith in today s world. CMF uses the study of both the Bible and the Catholic Catechism to provide a good vehicle to bring the love of Christ into central focus in your life. As the group evolves, CMF will consider other avenues to share their faith through fellowship, which could be anything from song and prayer, to attending conferences and retreats. All are welcome to come and see if CMF may be what you have been looking for. CMF currently meets every other Wednesday at the Kamiano Center at The Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace. The next meeting will be held on Feb. 2 at 8:00 pm. Please feel free to join us at one of our meetings or to find out more, please call or Ron Gochenouer at or r.gochenouer@hawaiiantel.net. 8 Celebrating the Four Pillars of Our Catholic Faith From Sharon Chiarucci, Office for Parish Resources In partnership with the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership and the National Association for Lay Ministry, Ave Maria Press is pleased to present this free webinar presented by Msgr. Peter J. Vaghi January 25, :00am Hawaii time Join Msgr. Peter J. His presentation is sure to enliven and equip RCIA leaders and all those who faithfully seek to pass on the treasures of our Catholic faith in adult formation. Register for the event here Sign up today. Space is limited! For a full schedule of presentations in the Ave Maria Press Professional Development Webinar series: Liturgy Matters: Anointing of the Catechumens From Fr. William Kunisch, Office of Worship During the period of the catechumenate, a rite of anointing the catechumens, through the use of the Oil of Catechumens, may be celebrated whenever this seems beneficial or desirable. These weeks of Ordinary Time prior to Lent may be an opportune time to do so. The anointing with oil symbolizes their need for God s help and strength, so that, undeterred by the bonds of the past and overcoming the opposition of the devil, they will forthrightly take the step of professing their faith and hold fast to it throughout their lives. The anointing with the Oil of Catechumens ordinarily takes place after the homily in a celebration of the Word of God (see no. 89 in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) and includes a Prayer of Exorcism prior to the anointing. Other rites proper to the period of the catechumenate include celebrations of the Word of God, minor exorcisms, and a blessing of catechumens. All of these can be found in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Celebrate the Gift and Blessing of Married Life this February From Most Rev. Kevin C. Rhoades, Chairman, Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life & Youth 8

9 The observance of Valentine s Day on February 14 provides an excellent opportunity to celebrate the gift and blessings of married life and to recognize the many couples who live their vocation in faith, hope, and love. It can also be an occasion to promote, within the Church and society, a better understanding of the true meaning and purposes of marriage. National Marriage Week USA will be observed on February 7-14 with the theme statement, Let s Strengthen Marriage. This project now in its second year is a collaborative effort to influence the culture by faith communities, business, media, education, and non-profit groups in order to: (a) Focus national attention on the need to strengthen marriage; (b) Launch new efforts for marriage education and crisis intervention; and (c) Promote a message about the benefits of marriage. Resources from the USCCB are featured on the National Marriage Week website; On Sunday, February 13, Worldwide Marriage Encounter is again promoting World Marriage Day in U.S. dioceses and parishes. Its theme is Love One Another. Helpful resources and suggestions for celebrating World Marriage Day can be found at Additional Resources: Pastoral letter on marriage, Love and Life in the Divine Plan, can be found in English and Spanish at Video and print materials and other educational and advocacy resources that convey why marriage is unique and why it should be promoted as the union of a man and a woman can be found at Cards with a Prayer for Married Couples in English and Spanish are available in packages of 100 from USCCB Publications at Update: Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Workshop From Carol Ignacio, Office of Worship SAVE THE DATE: February 9, 2011 February 10, 2011 Professional (and Personal) Responses to Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault 9
