3 CRS Ready to Respond to Devastation in Japan Catholic Relief Services is working with Caritas International and others to find pathways to bring aid to the many thousands stricken by the earthquake and tsunami that devastated northern Japan. The people of Japan who suffered this tragedy are our brothers and sisters, Sean Callahan, vice president of overseas operations said. Though it is too early to know the exact details of how we will help, we know that it is our mission to aid them in this time of need. As our mission is to serve the world s most poor and vulnerable people, CRS does not normally have a program in Japan. But, just as we did after the Kobe Earthquake in 1995, we will find appropriate partners for the expression of generosity by Catholics in the United States and others of goodwill. CRS has determined there was minimal damage from the tsunami in countries where we have programs such as the Philippines and Indonesia, said Callahan. Our focus now is on the people of Japan. A woman weeps while sitting amid destruction in Natori, Japan, March 13. (CNS photo/asahi Shimbun/Reuters) Caritas Japan has indicated that for now it will not be involved in immediate relief work, a huge operation run by the Japanese Army, but will focus on long-term recovery. In a statement, Caritas Japan noted that the damage is not only physical but also psychological. We will accompany people who lost their beloved, who lost everything and may stay at temporary shelter, and who have no one to rely on, the statement said. The president of Caritas Japan, Bishop Isao Kikuchi SVD says, We have received so many s from all continents, filled with words of compassion and prayer. We are very grateful for this solidarity. We believe that aid activity is needed, but prayer is also important in such a situation. CRS is accepting donations and will assist Caritas Japan with financial resources as well as with expertise if requested. You may go to for information on how to donate. 3

Life Issues Forum: A Grisly Business From Paulette Vernay, Respect Life Office LIFE ISSUES FORUM A Grisly Business by Tom Grenchik A priest friend of mine has been known to say, abortion is nothing more than violence masquerading as compassion. Planned Parenthood, the nation s largest abortion provider, tries hard to keep public focus on their compassionate services to women and not on the grisly reality that they put to death over 300,000 defenseless children, year in and year out. As much as abortion advocates struggle to hide that violence from the public view, nothing can hide the ongoing revelations of botched abortions and wanton injuries and deaths of mothers undergoing abortions coming from many abortion clinics around the country. The news of Dr. Gosnell s chamber of horrors abortion factory in Philadelphia was the most dramatic example of the depravity to which a person might sink when he makes his living by killing children. Abortion makes fast money with little-to-no government regulation. Gosnell has been charged with eight counts of murder and several staffers at his abortion center have been charged with assisting in botched abortions, practicing medicine without a license or covering up the actions of those who did. The counts include grisly infanticides of babies whose premature births were induced so they could be killed in the minutes following their births. This kind of horrific news seems to be helping Americans wake up to the extent of the carnage: over 50 million children dead, and over five million of them at the hands of Planned Parenthood staff. Every abortion whether in a filthy slaughterhouse or in a clean and bright abortuary still destroys a precious little boy or girl. And their mothers have died from abortions done at Planned Parenthood centers as well from California to Massachusetts and states in between. The abortion industry takes in over a billion dollars a year, so why does its flagship, Planned Parenthood, require $360 million a year in taxpayer funding? Planned Parenthood will argue that those federal dollars go to other expenses like salaries, rent or other programs, but this certainly frees other monies to be spent on promoting and performing abortions. 8

9 As Congress has been debating ways to cut back on the budget, pro-life members have proposed cutting all funding for Planned Parenthood and its 102 affiliates all around the country. But Senate Leader Harry Reid has now threatened that the Senate will not tolerate any defunding of Planned Parenthood. If Congress is really concerned about compassionate care for women, it should redirect funds now provided to organizations that perform and promote abortion, and instead respond to the basic needs of the poor. Whether at a shoddy abortion business in Philadelphia or the corporate empire of Planned Parenthood, abortion is truly nothing more than violence masquerading as compassion. And cutting programs for the poor, while giving hundreds of millions of federal dollars to an organization dedicated to eliminating the children of the poor, is simply one of the most appalling aspects of this tragic masquerade. Tom Grenchik is Executive Director of the Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Go to to learn more about the bishops pro-life activities. Word of Life Intercessions for Life - April 3 & 10, 2011 From Deacon Walter Yoshimitsu, Chancellor April 3 rd FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT For all persons with serious disabilities and for their families: that our parish and all Christians throughout the world will be generous in helping to care for their needs; We pray to the Lord: Bulletin Brief: We know from science that the moment of conception is a moment unlike any other. An amazing event takes place at the moment of conception. The union at the moment of conception constitutes an absolutely new and utterly exceptional moment of creation, the moment when a new, unrepeatable and irreplaceable human being comes to exist. This new human being has emerged, a vulnerable and unique self-directing self that never before was. It needs nothing but a safe place the mother s womb to grow and develop. After the moment of conception, this new human life will go through many stages and phases, none of which are as monumental as the one it has just emerged from: the moment of conception, the moment in which it began to exist. The science speaks for itself. The light of reason is clear. 9

10 ~Cardinal Justin Rigali, Archbishop of Philadelphia, Homily, National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Jan. 24, 2011 April 10th FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT For those mourning the death of a loved one: that God s promise of eternal life for those who believe in him will ease the pain of their loss; We pray to the Lord: Bulletin Brief: A couple of weeks ago I went for my physical, and was in the X-ray room. There, as clear as day, was the dramatic warning: X-rays can be dangerous to your unborn baby. Let the technician know if you are pregnant. We all know it, don t we? We re not talking about a fetus, a mass of cells, but a baby. The X-ray technicians know it; the obstetricians who show the sonogram to a mom know it; even the teenage mom on a recent MTV program sympathetic to abortion knew it when she pointed to a little baby and whispered, Don t tell me that little baby is just an it. ~ Most Rev. For more information contact Sharon Chiarucci, or Holy Trinity sponsors Living in Love Weekend April Submitted by Ed and Betty Coda, Presenters Often we say that we want to live our lives as Jesus would want us to. Sometimes we hear about Pope John Paul II s Theology of the Body and wonder how to incorporate his divine plan for couples into our everyday lives. Some days we feel like we want to love our spouse and make him or her feel loved and special. But it can be such a mystery to know and be able to actually make this real for us with our busy lives. A Living in Love Weekend will be presented by the best-selling authors of Passionate Parent Passionate Couple, Ed and Betty Coda, at Holy Trinity Parish on April 16 and 17. After they experienced this mini-retreat, they learned ways to solve this mystery for their own marriage and now they want to share this good news with others. Please join them.
