2 Pray for Our Priests, June 15 at 3:00pm Submitted by Natalie E. Diaz, Lilies of the Field, Maui Catholic Christian Store Friday, June 15 is World Day of Prayer for Priests. On this day we are encouraging Catholics in Hawaii to take a moment to pray the rosary for all priests. At 3:00 pm, take a moment to stop whatever you are doing to spend a quiet moment praying in thanksgiving for our priests and those contemplating the gift of priesthood. Please include Bishop Silva, your parish pastor, and all clergy serving the Diocese of Honolulu. Word of Life Intercessions for Life June 17, 2012 Submitted by Deacon Walter Yoshimitsu, Chancellor June 17, 2012 The Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time For fathers: That they remain faithful to the vocation they have received To be living witnesses of God s love to their spouse and children; We pray to the Lord: Bulletin Brief It cannot be taken for granted that human life in itself is a gift. Can it really be a beautiful gift? Do we know what will befall man in the dark days ahead or in the brighter days that could come? Can we foresee to what troubles, what terrible events he might be exposed? It is a problematic gift, if it is left to itself. Biological life is in itself a gift, but it is surrounded by a great question. It becomes a true gift only if, along with it, we are given a promise that is stronger than any evil that could threaten us, if it is immersed in a power that ensures that it is good to be human, that there will be good for this person no matter what the future brings. Thus, with birth is associated rebirth, the certitude that, truly, it is good to be alive, because the promise is stronger than evil. ~Pope Benedict XVI, Homily, Mass on the Occasion of the Holy Father s 85 th Birthday, April 16, Hospital Ministry Volunteers Needed Submitted by Fr. Teddy Gaquit, Director/Chaplain Hospital Ministry The Diocese of Honolulu s Hospital Ministry brings the care of the Catholic community to all Catholics who are hospitalized. This outreach is accomplished through visiting patients and families, providing daily sacramental services for patients, staff and volunteers at several Oahu hospitals. Please contact Fr. 3 Archdiocese for Military Services discontinues Summer Beach Mass From the Office of the Vicar General The Archdiocese for Military Services has informed the Diocese of Honolulu that the Summer Beach Mass at Ft. Fort DeRussy and the adjacent Hale Koa Hotel fall under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese for Military Services and the Catholic Chaplain assigned to these areas. Therefore, any Catholic masses or sacramental services held in these places need to be cleared by the Religious Support Office, Garrison Chaplain. Catholics wanting to attend mass are certainly encouraged to attend one of our neighboring parishes, Sts Peter and Paul; Sacred Heart or St. Augustine By-The-Sea. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Fr. Gary Secor, Vicar General at (808) Help Reduce Poverty this Father s Day, June 17th From Catholic Charities USA This Father s Day, what better way to honor your dad than by contributing to a worthy cause in his name? 4 Act Now! June 19 th Deadline for Comments to HHS Submitted by the Respect Life Office Life Issues Forum Fortnight 4 Freedom: Prayers, Witness and Action In "Our First, Most Cherished Liberty, the bishops called for a Fortnight for Freedom, a 14-day period of prayer, penance, education and action in defense of religious freedom from June 21 st through the Fourth of July. The Fortnight is packed with liturgical and civic significance. It starts on the vigil of the feast of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, martyrs who remained faithful to their conscience despite persecution by political power. Archbishop William Lori, chair of the bishops Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty, will open the Fortnight with Mass in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, the first diocese established in the United States. The Fortnight culminates on Independence Day. At noon on July 4, churches across the country both Catholic and non-catholic -- will ring their bells in a witness of solidarity. Cardinal Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, will preside at a nationally-televised Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. Archbishop Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Philadelphia, home of the Liberty Bell, will preach the homily. These key locations in our early American experience emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty. Throughout the two weeks, dioceses, parishes, Catholic groups, families, and individuals will raise a great hymn of prayer for our country. Well over half a million prayer cards have already been ordered in English and Spanish, with the text available online in Tagalog and Vietnamese as well. The English prayer card features our national patroness, Mary Immaculate; the Spanish card has an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of all the Americas and of the unborn. Other prayer resources may be found at In addition to our prayers, it is time to act. The most pressing need is to fight the unjust HHS rule that coerces employers to pay for sterilization and contraceptives, including drugs and devices that can induce early abortions. It forces Catholic organizations which play a vital role in providing health care and social services either to violate their conscience or severely curtail their vital work -- harming religious freedom and access to health care, alike. Virtually no one is exempt. There is no room for conscientious objection. Neither individuals nor the vast majority of employers can opt out of the mandated coverage without severe penalties prohibitive fees that would force many out of business. The law tramples on our basic rights of conscience and religious liberty all while treating pregnancy as a disease, and fertility as a pathological condition. As a Catholic woman in her childbearing years who works for a religious employer, I personally find it offensive on many fronts. Thank God the bishops are fighting not only on behalf of religious employers, but also on behalf of those in the private and public sector whose conscience rights are violated by this mandate, too. If you have already written to HHS in opposition to the mandate, thank you! We now have one final chance to make our voice heard on the oppressive rule. Visit and click on the action alert in the right margin. 4

5 Don t feel confident in how best to express yourself? No worries. The action alert offers pre-written text to HHS for you to personalize if you like. It is followed by a message to your representative and senators urging their support for the sensible Respect for Rights of Conscience Act (H.R. 1179/S. 1467). Please act now. While we will continue to urge support for conscience rights in Congress, the deadline for the last wave public comments to HHS is coming up quickly: Tuesday, June 19 th. Together, our prayers, church bell-ringing, and messages will raise a clear and united voice, as our prayer for religious liberty asks: Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters [so that] this great land will always be one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Deirdre A. McQuade is Assistant Director for Policy & Communications at the Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Background: The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has long supported the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act. With bipartisan backing for over a decade, this legislation would provide a path to citizenship and access to in-state tuition for qualified undocumented youth who were brought to the United States -some as infants- by their parents. The current Senate version of the DREAM Act, S.952, also allows young people who have grown up and graduated from high school in the United States the opportunity to gain legal status and eventually earn their citizenship through higher education or military service. Likewise, the House version bill, H.R.1842, contains these provisions. Indeed, in May 2012 Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami criticized proposed changes to the DREAM Act that deny young people the opportunity to earn their citizenship. Moreover, Archbishop Wenski applauded the current DREAM Act bills (S.952/H.R. 1842) pending before Congress, and wrote in the Miami Herald that denying bright young people an opportunity to earn citizenship isn t the right way to go. Sr. Agnelle Ching receives National Award for Innovative Leadership Submitted by Nathan Hokama, Strategic Communication Solutions, LLC (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) Sister Agnelle Ching, OSF, Chief Sponsorship Officer and former Chief Executive Officer of St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii, received the prestigious Sister Mary Concilia Moran Award for innovative leadership at the 2012 Catholic Health Assembly in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this evening. The award has been presented to a leader in Catholic health care who has demonstrated creativity and breakthrough thinking that advances the ministry. Sister Agnelle Ching is the first one from Hawaii to receive this award. As with St. Marianne Cope who came to the Islands to serve those who were afflicted with Hansen s disease nearly 130 years ago, we simply bring a heart that hungers to serve God, said Sister Agnelle Ching in her acceptance speech. When we see the needs of people through God s eyes, He always provides a way for us to meet those needs. He is the ultimate innovator. it is in meeting those needs that we can see the compassion and creativity of God at work. Sister Agnelle Ching, who has been a Sister of St. Francis for more than 50 years, currently serves as Chief Sponsorship Officer for St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii, after serving in other executive roles with St. Francis Healthcare System for a total of 14 years. Since January 2012, Sister Agnelle has been responsible for sponsorship initiatives, which include Mission Services, The St. Francis International Center for Healthcare Ethics, Continuing Medical Education and Physician Credentialing, Spiritual Services, and the St. Francis Healthy Lifestyles Program (HeLP). Previously, Sister Agnelle Ching served as Chief Executive Officer of St. Francis Healthcare System, a position she held since September It was a critical time when the System was planning the divestiture of St. Francis Medical Center in Liliha and St. Francis Medical Center-West to Hawaii Medical Center. Under her leadership, St. Francis began to chart a new direction and Sister Agnelle was instrumental in developing a 20- year vision for the healthcare system. She initiated St. Francis Palliative Care to provide care and pain management for those with chronic diseases; introduced telehealth monitoring for home health patients on Oahu and Kauai; oversaw the development of Franciscan Vistas Ewa, a $40 million senior independent living community that combines affordable housing with health and wellness amenities; and oversaw a $1 million investment in an electronic medical record system for both St. Francis Hospice and St. Francis Home Care Services; and facilitated a number of green initiatives that are consistent with the values of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology. Sister Agnelle also oversaw a $3.2 dollar modernization of St. Francis Hospice s two freestanding inpatient hospice facilities in Nuuanu and Ewa. During her leadership, hospice census tripled, solidifying St. Francis Hospice s market position as the largest hospice provider in the state. 9

10 Born and raised in Hawaii, Sister Agnelle received her bachelor s degree in sociology from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, New York; master s degree in religious education from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan; and professional diploma in administration and supervision from Fordham University in New York. As part of her recognition, Sister Agnelle Ching received an honorarium, which she will donate to Marae Ha`a Koa, an aquaponics program that is supported by St. Francis Healthy Lifestyles Program to meet the health and nutritional needs of families in Waianae. 14 Franciscan Media Center connects you to the Holy Land From Fr. Pierbattista Pizzaballa, OFM, Custos of the Holy Land Achieving the goal of telling the story of the Holy Land through images, in order to give voice and visibility to the Mother Church of Jerusalem, to local Christians, and to the Holy Places, has become a reality through the new site of the Franciscan Media Center (FMC), the television and multimedia center of the Custody of the Holy Land Through the new Internet site, which can be consulted in six languages (Italian, Arabic, Portuguese, English, French and Spanish), the FMC will bring the Holy Land closer to the many Christians, and others, who wish to know about, follow and stay in touch with the Land of Jesus. Archaeology, news, culture, events, pilgrimages, ecumenism, interreligious dialogue, faith are just a sample of the many subjects recounted on video news published daily on the new site and which also make up the Terra Santa News, a weekly news program broadcast in various languages by Catholic stations throughout the world. The Center, born in 2008 and whose headquarters are in the New City of Jerusalem, is also able to offer direct transmissions of celebrations from the most important Sanctuaries in the Holy Land. Retransmitted by numerous television stations, the live broadcasts of liturgies from the Holy Places can now be seen via video streaming on the new website. The FMC was a courageous choice of the Custody of the Holy Land, a necessary and imperative challenge which had to be undertaken in order that the Holy Places of salvation with all of their historical, cultural, human and spiritual vitality may continue to reach the far corners of the world. Please spread the news and visit the new site often.
