1 Diocese of Honolulu e-newsletter Tuesday of the 4 th Day of the Octave of Christmas (IV: 104) Holy Innocents December 28, 2010 A New Year s blessing for you From the Diocese of Honolulu. May you always enjoy the love of family and friends. May you be blessed with health and happiness. May you continue to enjoy new experiences with God. Bishop Larry and staff thank God for you and ask him to bless you abundantly in the coming year. Thus says the LORD: Cease your cries of mourning, wipe the tears from your eyes. The sorrow you have shown shall have its reward, says the LORD, they shall return from the enemy's land. There is hope for your future, says the LORD; your sons shall return to their own borders. Missionary Intention: That Christians may achieve full unity, bearing witness of the universal fatherhood of God to the entire human race. Liturgy Matters: Liturgical Calendar Advisories From Fr. William Kunisch, Office of Worship The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Committee on Divine Worship, has published the following advisories related to our liturgical calendar: Mary, Mother of God and Epiphany (January 1-2, 2011) Saturday, January 1, 2011 marks the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. The Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord follows on Sunday, January 2. Although both are ranked at number 3 on the Table of Liturgical Days, as a Solemnity of the Lord, the Epiphany outranks the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God (a Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin 2
3 Mary). Therefore, Mass on the evening of January 1 is the Vigil Mass of the Solemnity of the Epiphany. St. Francis Hospice Seeks Hospice Volunteers Training for Hospice Volunteers Begins January 8, 2011 From Cheryl Tamura, Development & Communication Director, St. Francis Healthcare Foundation of Hawaii St. Francis Hospice, a program of St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii, is seeking caring individuals who are willing to give of their time. Week of Prayer for Christian Unity From Charles Buck, Conference Minister United Church of Christ, Hawaii Conference For over a hundred years, Christians have observed the days between January 18 and 25 as the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. This annual observance is a call for us to pray with Jesus for the unity of all God s people that they all may be one (John 17:21). Here in Hawaii, one of the important and meaningful ways that we observe the Week of Prayer for Christian United is our annual ecumenical worship. The worship service will take place on Wednesday, January 19, 2011, beginning at 6:30 pm, at historic Kawaiahao Church (957 Punchbowl Street, Honolulu). Bishop Larry Silva will be in attendance. 7

9 298 toys, scooters, boogie boards, ipods, etc. were gifted to the Molokai community by the generous parish community of St. John Apostle and Evangelist Church, Oahu. Additionally, St. John s Hui O Laulima outreach ministry financed Hormel Hams for every family and a dozen $15 certificates for Molokai Drug Store that served as alternative gifts for teens. Families who came to shop at the Toyland were from every part of the island, most unemployed or experiencing a cut in hours/pay and some kupuna raising grandchildren while parent(s) live and work on neighbor islands to earn a living and provide financial care. Extra toys and canned hams will be shared with women and children in shelter for domestic violence, participating families in the Healthy Start program and other families as needs arise. Pictured above: Volunteers transform Kalanianaole Hall into Christmas Toyland. Sing praise to the LORD for his glorious achievement; let this be known throughout all the earth.
