2 ACTION ALERT: Update on HB444 From the Hawaii Catholic Conference As you may already know, on April 29, 2010, late in the afternoon, House members voted to pass HB 444, the civil union bill, (same-sex marriage by another name). That means the bill is on the Governor s desk for signature. Governor Lingle can (1) sign the bill into law, (2) veto the bill, or (3) let the bill become law without her signature. She has until July 6, 2010 to make a decision. (Keep in mind that if no decision is made the bill can become law without her signature.) We are asking you to flood the Governor's office with requests to veto the bill. Should the Governor veto the bill, the House will need 34 votes to override the Govenor s decision, so make contact with your own representative. Click here to see how the representatives voted: usevote.pdf PLEASE CONTINUE TO DO THESE THINGS: 1. Continue to pray 2. Call the Governor's Office at (808) and POLITELY ask her to VETO HB 444! (Click here to take action via VoterVoice: -1) 3. Contact your own Representative. If your representative voted AGAINST HB 444, thank them for standing firm. 4. Encourage all your friends and family and do the same. Thank you for your ongoing support! Word of Life From Deacon Walter Yoshimitsu, Chancellor Intercessions for Life May 16, Seventh Sunday of Easter For our political leaders: That they have the courage and wisdom to lead our country In a manner that respects the dignity of all human life; We pray to the Lord: Bulletin Briefs for May 2010: 2

3 When it is a matter of contexts that concern the human being, scientist can never think that they are merely dealing with inanimate and manipulatable matter. In fact, [ ] the very first instant of the human being s life is characterized by the fact that it is human life and for this reason possesses its own dignity everywhere and in spite of all. -Pope Benedict XVI, Message to the Pontifical Academy for Life (February 13, 2010) Catholic Communication Campaign June 4 and 5, 2010, 2 ND Collection From the USCCB If Jesus Christ were on earth today, how would he spread his message of salvation? Would he use television, radio, newspapers, text messages, billboards, DVDs, or even the Internet? Pope Benedict XVI, in his 43rd message for World Communication Day, said that "these technologies" are truly a gift to humanity and we must endeavor to ensure that the benefits they offer are put at the service of all human individuals and communities. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops established the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) collection in 1979 to respond to the national and local communications needs of the Church. The collection is unique in that proceeds are split equally between each participating diocese and the national office. Dioceses use their share of the CCC collection to support local communications efforts such as televised Masses and diocesan newspapers. On the national level, CCC funds support the development and production of a wide range of media initiatives that are carried out by USCCB staff and grantee organizations. A portion of the CCC s national funds are also set aside for grants to aid Catholic communication efforts in developing nations. Please visit to learn more about media resources made possible by the Catholic Communication Campaign. From podcasts of the Daily Readings from the New American Bible, to television specials seen on national networks and public service messages seen by millions of Americans, the Catholic Communication Campaign is how the Good News gets around!
