3 Vigésimo Séptimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario BEARING THE RIGHT KIND OF FRUIT Today s readings focus our attention on vineyards. Isaiah s song concerning his friend s vineyard begins with inspiring and poetic images of an idyllic vineyard where the choicest harvest is expected. Instead, the vineyard yields wild grapes, which causes the owner to abandon it. The psalmist cries out to God, asking that God once again take care of the vineyard, which is the house of Israel. The parable told in today s Gospel offers a stern warning that those who commit treachery in the hopes of attaining personal wealth will be put... to a wretched death (Matthew 21:41). Jesus warns his listeners not to act like the murderous tenants in the vineyard. Instead he exhorts them to produce the kind of fruit that will lead them to the kingdom of God. The old Roman Canon faded away into relative disuse after 1600 unbroken years, sometimes heard only at Christmas Midnight Mass or the Easter Vigil. The new Eucharistic Prayer IV, at least in its English form, grates a bit on most hearers, and besides is meant only for Ordinary Time. The reconstruction of the ancient prayer of Hippolytus, Eucharistic Prayer II, is the most familiar, but its brevity sometimes creates an imbalance with the Liturgy of the Word. No wonder that as soon as the creative juices began to flow at the Vatican, people worldwide were trying their hands at new prayers. In 1967, even before the final shape of the new Mass was announced, bishops were asking to adapt that celebration for the needs of children. They wanted to clarify what ought to happen when large numbers of children are at Mass: what could be adapted, omitted, or shortened. Experimentation had already begun. Separate Liturgies of the Word for children were by this time commonplace in Holland and elsewhere in Europe. Catechists were saying that many of our liturgical forms were too complex for the children in their charge, and priests were making adaptations on their own. Clearly, the Vatican had to take this seriously. Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Vineyards were an essential part of the economy of Israel during the times of Isaiah and Jesus. Vineyard owners had the difficult challenge of producing a rich harvest. Our readings from Isaiah and Matthew describe God and God s creation in terms of the business of vineyards. The two stories are closely linked, as Jesus borrowed and adapted his parable from Isaiah. Using this rich imagery, we can see the vineyard as all the places of God s creation and ongoing work. The vineyard is our heart, mind, and body. The vineyard is our family, neighborhood, and parish. The vineyard is the larger Church and society, humanity and the earth itself. We are stewards in each of these vineyards, blessed to enjoy them, and held accountable for their continuing fruitfulness. We are called to join God in cultivating these vineyards, so that they may produce an abundant harvest.

St. John Paul II, Thee Gospel of Life Parenting is the greatest joy and the greatest challenge most people ever experience. Even in the best of situations, expectant parents can use extra encouragement as they look forward to welcoming a new child. Expectant mothers, in a very special way, deserve the welcome and support of their communities. Archbishop José Gomez encourages us to support all expectant moms, especially those in difficult circumstances. "No woman should ever face a pregnancy feeling alone, or desperate, or like she has no other options (than abortion). These are our sisters. As people of faith, we have the great blessing of knowing that every child conceived is a unique, unrepeatable gift of our Heavenly Father. Sometimes, a pregnancy can be seen as a problem. But, how can a child be a problem? Rather, the lack of support the mother or the parents have to welcome their child is the problem. Of the 1 million mothers in the United States who seek abortions each year, 75% are poor or low income. We know that abortion intentionally takes a human life and can never be acceptable. But we also know that we belong to the same human family and that we are all brothers and sisters in Christ. As the Church, we are called to embrace and champion pregnant and parenting mothers and families. Through our love, and with friendship, prayer, and practical support and resources, we can encourage and assist moms and dads to be the best parents they can be. Love is the answer. Steephen Viblanc, OSM Fr. Steephen was born in India to a prayerful family. Immediately after his high school education, he entered the Servite Order or the Order of Friar Servants of Mary in 1997 and was ordained on April 22, 2009 also for that community. He was then appointed as a Vocation Director as well as both as an Associate Pastor and Pastor for a Servite parish while still in India. His community subsequently assigned him in California on July 2014 and was assigned at Divine Savior Catholic Church in Los Angeles for a period of six months. He was later assigned to Servite High School, an all male Roman Catholic College preparatory high school located in Anaheim as a Chaplain and Spiritual Director for the school. His main function is counseling the students and saying the everyday mass at the school, confession and retreats complementing the formation of each student to the person of Christ, drawing them to embrace Christ, love Christ, imitate, live and be Christ to others. Fr. Steephen is also helping out nearby parishes like St. Paul of the Cross, St. Philip's at Fullerton and St. Linus Church. He helps the Cursillo Movement in Anaheim for their weekly Wednesday masses. We see that God is intensely passionate about us. God is deeply committed, like the landowner who diligently prepares the vineyard. God has high expectations that the vineyard produce the fruit of a just and compassionate society. God is highly disappointed and angry that the vineyard has produced bad fruit (Isaiah), or has been treated as a prize to be seized (Matthew). There are more chapters in the larger story that also need to be told. Later in Isaiah and in Matthew, we see that God is also deeply compassionate and forgiving. Isaiah speaks of God s tender care, as a mother loves her child (Isaiah 49). In Matthew, Jesus demonstrates God s forgiveness most dramatically on the cross. God is indeed most patient and resilient. God never gives up on us. God continues to pursue us, offering us love and grace, now and always. THE CORNERSTONE The powerful conclusions of the two vineyard tales are meant to linger in our memories. God indeed expects much of us, to live justly and mercifully. However, we know that God is not prickly and impatient, as we might be led to imagine if we read these stories out of context. The stories do invite us to ponder again who God really is. Especially during times of difficulty or of failure in our lives, we might wonder how we might best understand the mystery of God. context. The stories do invite us to ponder again who God really is. If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus. Look at his patience and mercy. Look at his compassion for the suffering, his passion for justice. Look also at the joy and healing experienced by those in his presence. As today s Gospel passage indicates, Jesus is the cornerstone, the starting point of coming to know our God.
