3 Vigésimo Octavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario THE HEAVENLY BANQUET The mountain of the Lord described in today s first reading is a place where there is no more hunger, no more weeping, and no more division of any kind. We need to pause and ponder these images every now and then, especially given the fact that we live in such a fractured world. The responsorial psalm continues to paint a picture of a place where only goodness and kindness flourish. These readings describe the heavenly banquet, to which God calls each of us through baptism and continues to call us throughout our lives. Let us RSVP to God s invitation and live our lives consistent with gospel values so that one day we will be welcomed to the table of the kingdom. Question of the Week First Reading On this mountain the LORD will make for all peoples a feast of rich food and choice wines (Isaiah 25:6-10a). Psalm I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life (Psalm 23). Second Reading God will supply whatever you need (Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20). Gospel I have prepared my banquet, and everything is ready. Come to the feast! (Matthew 22:1-14 [1-10]). Question for Children: Why is it important for you to do what Jesus asks of you? Question for Adults: Using Jesus parable as your starting point, describe in your own words who will be welcome and why they will be welcome, at the eternal banquet of God. 5 Vigésimo Octavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario PAGE 5 Treasures from our Tradition Tradiciones de nuestra Fe In 1971, the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship completed a survey of the presidents of the national liturgical commissions around the world. How were children doing in the liturgical reform? Probably to their surprise, the cardinals learned of special weekday Masses for children designed to teach them how to participate on Sunday, Masses with separate components for children. The decision was made quickly to develop adaptations for Masses where children were a majority of the assembly. Changes would include a simpler structure, understandable texts, a simplified Lectionary, more active participation, and most surprisingly, new Eucharistic Prayers. By 1973 the work was done, and with very specific advice from Pope Paul VI, including the need for two new Eucharistic Prayers, the Directory for Masses with Children was published on December 20, a timely Christmas gift for the children of the world. The prayers are the first to be written fresh in a modern language not Latin, but French and German then translated into English, Italian, and Spanish. With a sense of caution, these new prayers were approved for three years, until 1977, but it soon became apparent that they had truly been embraced. W HITE SPECIAL MASS P RAYER ENVELOPE Check side tables/walls by side doors & vestibule for "White Special Mass Prayer Envelopes". They can be used for additional special prayer after "Prayers of the Faithful/Intercessions". i.e.: Birthdays, Weddings, Anniversaries, Recent deaths, Death Anniversary, Illness, Surgery, Blessings & Other Special Prayers. HOLY MATRIMONY Criss Anthony de Guzman Trinidad & Joisabel Ladao Goldberg M ARRIED ON OCTOBER 17, 2017 Your Prayers are requested For the Eternal Repose of: Carlos Serrano Rodriguez Manuel Gallegos Prayerful and deepest sympathy go out to their families, relatives and friends La Virgen María tiene siglos de estar apareciéndose a los cristianos. All Souls Novena OF NINE HOLY MASSES Please take an envelope and write the names of your loved ones who have gone before us. Drop the envelope in the collection basket during mass today or during the week before October 25th. These envelopes will be placed on the altar for nine consecutive days from November 2, All Souls Day through November 10 and all the names will be lifted up in prayer during our Eucharistic celebrations. Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Our readings this week speak of God s promises and their fulfillment, all in different ways. Isaiah presents a feast set in the future and hosted by God. Here the participants witness the astonishing generosity of God. At the feast, God gives the ultimate gift, the destruction of death itself. Saint Paul, confident in the fulfillment of God s abundant promises, urges the Philippians to live in gratitude and patience. Today s Gospel, however, is more challenging for us to hear. While announcing God s generous invitation, Jesus also describes, in dramatic imagery, how people may reject the invitation. Matthew reminded the early church of the need to recognize God s summons and be prepared to participate fully in God s banquet. This complex and unsettling parable invites our reflection on the nature of God s invitation and our response.

6 PAGE 6 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 15, 2017 RESPECT LIFE MONTH END OF LIFE ISSUES When earthly existence draws to a close, it is again charity which finds the Most appropriate means for enabling the elderly, especially those who can no longer look after themselves, and the terminally ill to enjoy genuinely humane assistance and to receive an adequate response to their needs, in particular their anxiety and their loneliness. St. John Paul II, The Gospel of Life In 2016, California legalized physician-assisted suicide. This law, applauded by some as a victory for autonomy, has in reality led to a culture of despair. As a society, we decry and make every attempt to stop the increasing suicide rate in teens and young adults. However, by legalizing suicide for the terminally ill, we essentially create a separate class of people a class whose lives are not as important and who are not worthy of our care. In our culture, people are facing the end of their lives in situations they would not prefer. 80% of Americans say they would like to die at home, but only 20% actually do. 60% die in hospitals and another 20% in nursing homes. It is important to recognize that much in our healthcare system needs fixing. However, there is much that we can do to help our loved ones welcome their final days in comfort, peace, and surrounded by love. Catholics have a 2000-year tradition of taking care of the sick, elderly, and the dying. We are called to advocate for our loved ones to receive the best care possible. _is includes standardized palliative care which manages pain extraordinarily effectively, helping the dying and their families receive hospice care if they desire it, ensuring that each patient receives nutrition and hydration as their condition allows, and asking for the Anointing of the Sick. The best gift we can give is that of accompaniment for our loved ones in their last days, secure in the knowledge of their value and dignity as children of God. A DVOCATE ADVANCE DIRECTIVES FOR HEALTHCARE Advance Directives for Healthcare are documents that detail one s wishes at the end of life, and names a durable power of attorney for healthcare who can make decisions. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has created a Catholic version that is approved for use in California. Visit archla.org/endoflife to learn more. S ERVE VISIT THE ELDERLY You can visit the elderly of your parish, or a local nursing home. Get creative host activities, bring them Holy Communion, or drive them to church! A PRO LIFE ROSARY FOR THE UNBORN Every Tuesday at 6:30 pm inside church before mass Many lives depend on us advocating for them! Join us January 20, 2018 for OneLife LA OneLife LA is our walk in downtown LA celebrating the beauty and dignity of every human life from conception to natural death. At 12 noon we walk from Olvera Street to LA State Historic Park for a family-friendly festival with incredible speakers, live music, food trucks, and service opportunities. We are all called to be saints. And we are called to make saints! This Respect Life Month, we are remembering five saints who were fed by prayer, heard the call, and answered it to become missionary disciples. They built the kingdom of God in their midst. Sts. Ann and Joachim - They were regular parents. But they raised Mary, the greatest saint of all time, and they were the grandparents of Jesus! Their ministry was to be holy parents and to live their vocation. St. John Paul II - Not only did he write and speak eloquently of the dignity of human life, and the blessing of the elderly, but he lived it. He showed us how to suffer for Christ and offer one's life as a gift to the Lord. St. Jerome Emiliani - A military captain, Jerome fought valiantly in war until he was captured and imprisoned. He experienced a radical conversion in prison, and upon his release, began welcoming war orphans into his home. He embraced these orphans and the poor with love. Servant of God Dorothy Day - She experienced the pain of abortion in her life. But she found healing and conversion. In her lifetime, she went on to raise a daughter as a single mother and found the Catholic Worker movement, serving the poor and homeless in a revolutionary way.

Every Tuesday at 8:00 pm in the Religious Education Room. RECEIVING GOD S JOY The final scene introduces the unacceptably dressed banquet guest. Matthew is concerned here about the full readiness of those who accept God s invitation. A superficial assent or participation is not enough. God wants our whole selves invested here. Jesus followers are to be prepared for the banquet, as suggested by the wedding garment. The meaning of the garment is not clearly explained. It s helpful to recall that a wedding banquet, then and now, is a profoundly joyous event. Being dressed appropriately means being ready to celebrate. Our hearts must be ready to receive God s joy. Indeed, it can be difficult to be receptive to joy when we have been hurt in many ways during our lives. Our pain may cause us into close up, pulling away from others and away from God. It helps to remember that our God overflows with joy and is eager to share the fullness of joy with us. In our times of suffering, God actively invites us to receive this joy, and in turn to share it with others. Cuando se trata de la salud de sus seres queridos, No espere. Vacune. 9 Vigésimo Octavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario PAGE 9 Safeguard the Children Healing Mass Did You Know? Beyond the myth of the bathing suit rule In the past, child abuse prevention programs focused on teaching children and young people that their private body parts are those parts of the body covered by a bathing suit. Teaching the concept of total body safety has become the latest practice. It is important for children to understand that their entire body is private. Parents should be watchful of adults who might be grooming a child by constantly tickling, kissing or hugging them. It is important to listen to a child and respect their wishes if they do not want to hug or kiss someone. Steephen Viblanc, OSM Fr. Steephen was born in India to a prayerful family. Immediately after his high school education, he entered the Servite Order or the Order of Friar Servants of Mary in 1997 and was ordained on April 22, 2009 also for that community. He was then appointed as a Vocation Director as well as both as an Associate Pastor and Pastor for a Servite parish while still in India. His community subsequently assigned him in California on July 2014 and was assigned at Divine Savior Catholic Church in Los Angeles for a period of six months. He was later assigned to Servite High School, an all male Roman Catholic College preparatory high school located in Anaheim as a Chaplain and Spiritual Director for the school. His main function is counseling the students and saying the everyday mass at the school, confession and retreats complementing the formation of each student to the person of Christ, drawing them to embrace Christ, love Christ, imitate, live and be Christ to others. Fr. Steephen is also helping out nearby parishes like St. Paul of the Cross, St. Philip's at Fullerton and St. Linus Church. He helps the Cursillo Movement in Anaheim for their weekly Wednesday masses. Father Steephen continues to find his relationship with the Lord increasing everyday in his love to serve God's people as a way of serving His master.
