3 Trigésimo Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario SHARING OUR GIFTS Autumn is the season for harvesting and sharing the fruits of our labors. This week s scriptures use images of the harvest, family life, pregnancy, and investment to describe the abundant harvest in the reign of God. We discover that sharing the gifts we have been given brings eternal rewards for everyone. In the Gospel parable a master entrusts his possessions to three servants before going on a journey. Each is given some talents. What they do with those talents determines what the master will do with them when he returns. How about us? What are we doing with our talents? How will our Master treat us when he returns? Question of the Week First Reading The woman who fears the LORD is to be praised (Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31). Psalm Blessed are those who fear the Lord (Psalm 128). Second Reading Brothers and sisters, you are children of the light (1 Thessalonians 5:1-6). Gospel To all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance (Matthew 25:14-30 [14-15, 19-21]). Question for Children: Name one talent or gift that God has given you and tell how you have used it. Question for Adults: Using Jesus' parable as your starting point, describe in your own words how you are using your own gifts to enrich the reign of God. 5 Treasures from our Tradition Trigésimo Tercer del Tiempo Ordinario PAGE 5 Tradiciones de nuestra Fe Earlier this autumn, we looked at how our Eucharistic Prayers have been enriched by the approval of several new prayers to augment the old Roman Canon. For us, there are the four standard prayers, three for Masses with Children, and the most recent addition, the former Swiss Eucharistic Prayer with four alternative forms (now known as the Eucharistic Prayer for Masses for Various Needs and Occasions). We also have two Eucharistic Prayers for Masses of Reconciliation. The source for these two prayers is the request by many bishops for a special prayer for the Holy Year of Originally, the committee in charge was commissioned to write a single prayer, but the theme proved so rich that it gave rise to two. The first is based on and develops biblical texts on reconciliation. The second starts with the experience of living in today s fractured world, and how the Spirit calls us to reconciliation and peace. Not everyone was happy with all this creativity, saying that if too many were published, it would be difficult for the Vatican to control further requests. Everyone thought the pope would put strict limits on the prayers, but in the end he said he was willing to open doors that had long been closed. Although he approved them for a period of only three years, they were never formally removed from the Sacramentary and have been incorporated into the new Roman Missal. HOLY MATRIMONY Francisco Rocha & Elena Mejia M ARRIED ON NOVEMBER 11, 2017 USING TALENTS If we use God s talents, we shall find that they become multiplied in the use. We thought we had two; we find we have five. W HITE SPECIAL MASS P RAYER ENVELOPE Check side tables/walls by side doors & vestibule for "White Special Mass Prayer Envelopes". They can be used for additional special prayer after "Prayers of the Faithful/Intercessions". i.e.: Birthdays, Weddings, Anniversaries, Recent deaths, Death Anniversary, Illness, Surgery, Blessings & Other Special Prayers. Thirty-third Sunday of Ordinary Time Which servant am I? Imagine being one of the servants in the parable we hear today from the Gospel of Matthew. We can feel the pride of the first two servants, who wisely used the talents given to them. We imagine the fear and shame of the third, who did not. The servants were given different sums of money, according to their ability. None was given more than what he was capable of handling. Yet only two made the talents they were given fruitful. As a result, these two heard, Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master s joy. As we hear the parable, we must wonder, Which servant am I?

The talents were not theirs, yet they were called to make the talents fruitful in their master s absence. They were expected to treat the talents as though they were their own. Our gifts life, talents, financial and material resources truly are God s. We are entrusted with these gifts and are expected to use them well, to make Christ s presence known in the world. Like the woman in today s passage from the book of Proverbs, we are to work with loving hands, reaching out to the poor and extending our arms to the needy (Proverbs 31:20) through the ways in which we use the time, resources, talents, and gifts that God has entrusted to us. Notice that the third servant in the Gospel parable, the one deemed wicked and lazy, did not misuse his talent. He simply buried it. What talent, gift, or resource are you using well? What gift have you buried? It is time to dig it up, dust it off, and start using it as children of the light and children of the day (1 Thessalonians 5:6). DID YOU KNOW? Online Grooming- Learning all we can about how predators groom children through online contact is key to keeping them safe at all times. Language is a predator s tool for grooming online. One tactic that online predators use to groom a potential victim is by complimenting and reinforcing their self-image as a way of normalizing their interactions. Compliments are used to build trust, desensitize, and mentally or emotionally isolate the potential victim from others. It is important to remember that monitoring the online communication of young people on chats, apps, gaming websites, etc. is key in preventing abuse. 10 PAGE 10 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 19, 2017 THE MASTER The master in the parable of the three servants may sound harsh, until we reflect on the story from his perspective. It was his money. He had entrusted it to the servants. They obviously knew what was expected of them, and two fulfilled their duties well. Their master was wise to entrust his treasure to them. Through their faithful stewardship, the talents increased. Hearing the parable this way, we must consider Jesus meaning in telling it. We do not know when our Master, Christ our Lord, will return. What we do know is that God has entrusted many gifts to us and expects that we will be good and faithful stewards of them all. 11 On behalf of Fr. Tony, Fr. Les, Fr. Brian and Fr. Marco, We wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving! Trigésimo Tercer del Tiempo Ordinario PAGE 11 BE WISE, BE READY This urging to be ready for Christ s return is not intended to frighten us, but rather to focus our attention on the things that matter. Wisdom lies in seeking God in all things. With the Psalmist, the wise person prays, My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God (Psalm 63:2b). Christ s way is not hidden from us, as though we are playing a game of hide and seek. It is readily perceived (Wisdom 6:12) by all who love God. We know the way through the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, Christ s great command to wash one another s feet, to love and serve with glad hearts. To act accordingly is to be wise, and those who are wise will be ready. If You Live Alone You Need LIFEWatch! 24 Hour Protection at HOME and AWAY!
