Have your children bring their backpacks with them to church. THIRD GRADE BIBLE PRESENTATION: Children beginning the 3rd grade will be given their Spark Bibles. SEPTEMBER 10 ~ 2017 ~ Join us for worship and a welcome back celebration as we rally together to kick off a new year of Sunday School! All are invited to stay for brunch and fellowship following worship. SUNDAY SCHOOL: Following brunch, a registration and parent meeting will be held. During this time, activities will be provided for the children. 2 MARKED WITH THE CROSS OF CHRIST FOREVER We walked into Jerusalem s Old City at the Jaffa Gate through its ancient high fortified walls. We walked to Greek Catholic Patriarchate Street and turned left onto this street. When we came to St. George Alley, we turned right onto this alley and soon came to a shop in an ancient building along the alleyway that had a sign above it which says the following: Razzouk Tattoo: Tattoo With Heritage Since Razzouk Tattoo is owned and operated by the Razzouk Family, a Coptic (Egyptian) Orthodox Christian family that has been doing religious tattoos for Christian pilgrims of every branch of the Christian Church for 700 years, starting in Egypt at first and now in Jerusalem, Israel. And it was there at Razzouk Tattoo that seven of our Israel pilgrims received a permanent certification of our pilgrimage to the Holy Land and to Jerusalem. The ancient Coptic Christian tradition is to receive a small cross on the inside right wrist. There is the Coptic Orthodox Cross of course, but, for a pilgrimage up to the Holy City, most people get the Jerusalem Cross. And the Jerusalem Cross is a very important cross symbol for our Christian brothers and sisters in the Holy Land. It is one large cross with four small crosses in the four quadrants of the large cross. Taken together, the five crosses of the Jerusalem Cross represent the Five Wounds of Christ: two nails for his feet, two nails for his hands, and the spear in his side. In addition, the four small crosses in the four quadrants of the large cross represent the Four Gospels of the Holy Bible and the Four Corners of the Earth. Most of our group of seven at Razzouk Tattoo received the Jerusalem Cross, but some received a different symbol like the Christian Fish or the Bethlehem Star Cross. In any case, these physical marks of pilgrimage are reminders of the invisible mark of Christ placed upon us by God s grace through our Holy Baptism and our Christian faith. In fact, at the Sacrament of Holy Baptism we declare, You have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the Cross of Christ forever. So, regardless of the branch of the Christian Church Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Protestant, or Pentecostal we are ONE CHURCH in Christ Jesus our Savior and Lord. As the Apostle Paul writes, In the one Spirit we were all baptized into one Body... Now you are the Body of Christ and individually members of it (from First Corinthians 12: 12-27). Furthermore, our Lord Jesus himself prayed the following prayer for his Church: JOHN 17: 1-2, 9-11, After Jesus had spoken these words, he looked up to heaven and prayed, Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him 9 I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. 11 And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one 20 I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you 2 ETCETERA Our Mission Continues

3 have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24 Father, I desire that those also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 Righteous Father, the world does not know you, but I know you; and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them. I believe this powerful prayer of Jesus is becoming more fully manifested within his Church throughout the world today. Christians of all branches of Christianity are drawing closer together in the faith, hope and love of our Lord Jesus. I even saw this embodied at Razzouk Tattoo in Jerusalem s Old City. One by one, I saw Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant Christians gathering at Razzouk Tattoo. I saw fellow Christians of many stripes being inked by Wissam Razzouk, the latest generation of Razzouk Family tattoo artists. And Christian pilgrims have received from Wissam everything from Orthodox crosses to simple line crosses, from the divine name YHWH written in the Hebrew and Aramaic languages to various Bible verses written in the Syriac and Coptic languages. Those of us who received our pilgrim tattoos returned to America knowing that we had received them in the same place and from the same Razzouk hands that had been tattooing our Christian ancestors for centuries. But more importantly, ALL of our Israel pilgrims came home with a new appreciation for the UNITY IN DIVERSITY of the Body of Christ, the Holy Church of Jesus throughout the world. Together in the Body of Christ, Pastor Tim CHURCH COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS Here are some of the items discussed at the AUGUST Church Council meeting: Nick Singleton spoke about his Eagle Scout project. He made a proposal that he would like to refurbish the church labyrinth. After Council discussion, Council approved the proposal. Once he gets approval from the Boy Scouts, he will proceed with fundraising and construction. September 10th is Rally Sunday. There will be a Polka mass, blessing of the backpacks for children, blessings for the Sunday School teachers and Church Council members, and third grade children will receive their Spark Bibles. Looking ahead to October, we will have a baptism, wedding, children will be performing a Reformation skit, and our celebration for the 500th Anniversary of The Reformation will be on October 29th with Confirmations. An African service for Meru Day of Prayer will be held outside on September 17th. The Stewardship Committee is looking to get together to discuss the stewardship drive this fall. They will also be looking at redoing the Time & Talents sheets to make them more user friendly. The church sign is being manufactured. We will need to wait for the grading to be done in front of the church before our sign can be installed. Peterson Veterans Village in Racine on Tuesday, Sept. 5. We will meet at church at 9 AM then drive to Racine for our 10 AM tour. DINERS CLUB We are excited to announce that we are starting up a Diners Club and would like to invite you to join us for a meal with fellow members to share a night of fun, friendship and fellowship. See Pastor Tim if you should have any questions. WALL OF CROSSES We have a new olive wood cross from the Holy Land added to our wall. A gift from the 2017 Israel Pilgrimage Group. The cross is from a Christian gift shop at the summit of Mt. Carmel, Israel. The name Carmel (in Hebrew Karem El ) means Vineyard of God and Mt. Carmel is the biblical site where the Prophet Elijah stood against the Pagan prophets of Ba al. Thank you for bringing back this beautiful wood cross for everyone to enjoy! 7 REACHING OUT TO HELP OTHERS Putting our Faith into Action Lutheran World Relief School Supplies Needed... We are happy to help support LWR this year with the collection of school supplies for less fortunate children. Your generous donations of school items help provide the important tools for education to a child in need. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. Luke 4:18 Outreach for Hope Pedal to push down poverty. Celebrating 10 years! The Annual Family Bike Ride is being held on Saturday, September 9, at St. Bruno Parish in Dousman, WI. This is a chance to get active with family and friends of all ages on roads or trails in the beautiful Kettle Moraine while helping to raise money for Outreach for Hope. The Family Ride begins at 9:00 AM. Registration and event information is available online at Habitat for Humanity 2017 Thrivent Build Do you enjoy painting? Here is your chance to give back to the community. Volunteers are needed on Saturday, September 23, from 9 AM-3 PM. Detailed information sheets are available at church in the gathering room. The measure you give will be the measure you get back. Luke 6:38 Southwest Interfaith Linking Older Adults with a caring community Mum Plant Sale On Sunday, September 10, and on Wednesday, September 13, you will be able to buy autumn mum plants in a variety of colors to celebrate Grandparent s Day. These could be given as gifts or planted in your own yard as a special memorial. All proceeds support Southwest Interfaith Neighborhood Outreach Program. Divine Intervention A food and encouragement ministry to the homeless in the Bay View area. We will continue to collect breakfast bars for this worthwhile ministry. Bars may be brought into church and placed in the collection box located in the coat room. Your continued support is appreciated. A special thank you to the McGinty, Haas, and Stefanski families for volunteering to prepare and serve dinner to our homeless neighbors. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. Matthew 25:35-36 Crop Hunger Walk Fight hunger in our community and around the world! The Greater Milwaukee CROP Walk takes place at the McKinley Marina on Milwaukee s Lakefront on Sunday, October 9. You can participate by either walking in this year s event or by sponsoring a walker with a donation. The money raised helps children and families to fight poverty and hunger in the U.S. and around the world. Watch for more information on this important event in future church bulletins.
