POLKA SERVICE: We will begin the morning with a Polka Mass service at 9:00 AM. All are welcome to stay for brunch, fellowship and live polka music immediately following worship. BLESSING OF THE BACKBACKS: On this special morning, we will also be blessing backpacks for the new school year during the worship service. Have your children bring their backpacks with them to church. SUNDAY SCHOOL: Following brunch, a registration and parent meeting will be held. During this time, activities will be provided for the children. 2 ENCOUNTERING GOD IN DETROIT In chapter 19 of the Book of First Kings, we see the Prophet Elijah fleeing the idolatrous Queen Jezebel who was seeking to kill him. He fled to the wilderness, and he felt alone in his faith in God. Then, in his dejected and dispirited state, he prayed the following in response to God: I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away. (First Kings 19:10) Consequently, the Lord God gave Elijah the great gift of a mystical glimpse of God s glorious Presence and power. And then God assures Elijah that he is not alone in his faith. In fact, God tells him that he has Hazael, Jehu and Elisha, as well as seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal (verse 18). As people of faith in God, we sometimes feel alone in our spiritual convictions. Like Elijah, we can sometimes feel under assault by secularism and anti-religionism. So, as it was for Elijah, we also need to be reminded from time to time that we are not alone in our faith in God. And for me the 2015 ELCA National Youth Gathering in Detroit was exactly this kind of powerful reminder. With 30,000 Lutheran youth in Detroit, I was encouraged and strengthened in my Christian faith and spiritual life. Through all the activities, including worship and charitable service, I felt like I was given a glimpse of God s glorious Presence and power. Again, Elijah s experience gives us perspective: And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. (First Kings 19:11b-12) With all the music bands, massive venues, impressive stage effects, and all the big bells and whistles, I have to say that we received a high-tech dose of musical wind, theological earthquakes and spiritual fire. However, for me, I encountered God most powerfully within the massive silences when we were called to bow our heads in prayer, or when the entire assembly at Ford Field was intently listening to the Word of God read to us from the Holy Bible, or when all 30,000+ of us were silently focused on Jesus words of Holy Communion (his sacred Words of Institution) prior to receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion. And, in addition to God s still small voice within the massive silences of this gathering, I would also add that I encountered God when I heard the voices of tens of thousands of Lutherans professing the Apostles Creed and praying the Lord s Prayer. It was amazing! Therefore, as Elijah was strengthened in the wilderness, and as our Adoration group was strengthened in Detroit, you can also take heart that there are many others who share our faith in God. Like a modern Jezebel, the present-day idolatry of Godlessness and secularism may be seeking to kill faith and spirituality, but God is mightier than we can imagine, we have been given the greatest gift of God s precious Son Jesus to save and redeem us, and we are not alone because God has maintained a faithful remnant by his grace. For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever. Amen. (Romans 11:36) Together in Christ! Pastor Tim 2 ETCETERA Our Mission Continues

3 Here are some of the items discussed at the August Church Council meeting: A new members class is being held on Saturday, August 29. New members will be welcomed into our congregation on Sunday, August 30. Confirmation orientation will be held September 10, Rally Sunday is September 13, Altar decorations will be dedicated on Rally Sunday. We continue to collect school supplies for Lutheran World Relief. The contact information for Council members can be found on a board in the entryway at church ELCA YOUTH GATHERING Jeff Faltersack First off I want to thank everyone who helped by participating in our fundraising to send us to the 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering. It was a very rich and rewarding experience and one that will forever change me. To see that many people flood the city of Detroit with the love of Jesus was amazing. All the youth worked very hard and I am proud of each and every one of them! Brandon Faltersack The one thing that I thought was really cool was that when we were at the park cleaning, a neighbor walked up to my dad, Pastor and I and he said that what we were doing was amazing and it really restored his faith in humanity. He loved the idea that the youth groups were helping out the city and even some neighborhood kids were helping us out. Overall, it was just fun to help out a community in the need of help. Nicholas Singleton On our trip to Detroit the biggest thing that I noticed was the sheer number of people who went. After the concert every night the streets were clogged with people, all of which were there for the Rise Up event. Everybody was there to help the city, and that's just what we did. Most of the city residents we encountered were just overflowing with joy and hope because of us being there. It was truly a wonderful experience. Scott Taddey In Detroit, Michigan, my faith in Jesus has grown because he gave me the opportunity to explore people and places that are desperate. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit created these events for us to participate in which demonstrated what defines a Lutheran and how we shall pass on God's noble work in our hometowns. Stephanie Taddey The biggest learning moment for me on this trip was when the Bishop gave his sermon. I honestly don't remember what he said, but I remember how he made me feel. He inspired me to think of the barriers that were in between me and Jesus, and to break them down. Right then and there I realized my faith, and strengthened the relationship between me and God. 4 FUN RUN VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith. (2 Timothy 4:7) Thank you to all the volunteers who made VBS a great success! Our group of 14 students learned lessons about Jesus through the I AM statements. I'd like to say a special thanks to Sandy Eigner for organizing the crafts, Janet McGinty for leading the music, Chris Cason for running the kitchen, and Jeanette Nowakowski for facilitating the Bible story. And a very special thanks to Laura Demos, Stephanie Taddey, Rebecca Posig, Grace Singleton, Nick Singleton, Lauren Bednar, Jenna Bednar, and Charlotte Douangmala for volunteering their time and talents to assist in every aspect of VBS. July 12th we had Sunday Brunch at Rushing Waters in Palmyra which was enjoyed by all. Thanks Judy & Jim Goodwin for chairing this event. August 4th we had a pot luck before our general meeting. Thanks to JoAnn Voegeli for chairing this event. Thanks to all who helped set up & clean up. August 11th we were host to our senior friends from Unity Lutheran. Eighteen seniors from Unity attended including 102 year old Irene and 91 year old twins, Beverly & Bernice. We treasure the friendship with Unity. Thank you Betty Wing for chairing this event. Thanks to all who helped to set up & clean up and thanks to those who donated gifts for our bingo games. A special thanks to Gina Alba for always setting up our tables & chairs. All adults are welcome to join us for fellowship & fun. Check the kiosk for up coming events. THANK YOU to the Worship & Music Committee for the new altar furnishings and processional cross. They look beautiful. We will dedicate them to the Glory of God during the announcements on Rally Sunday. It s that time of year to fire up those voices once again and sing to the Lord a new song! We go in weekly & check the kitchen, unfortunately some things get tossed out. In order to help us keep our kitchen clean & uncluttered, please help us out by removing your left over food & supplies. 6 REACHING OUT TO HELP OTHERS Putting our Faith into Action Lutheran World Relief School Supplies Needed... We are happy to help support LWR this year with the collection of school supplies for less fortunate children. Your generous donations of school items help provide the important tools for education to a child in need. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. Luke 4:18 Outreach for Hope Pedal to push down poverty. The Annual Family Bike Ride is being held on Saturday, September 12 at St. Bruno Parish in Dousman, WI. This is a chance to enjoy biking with family and friends of all ages on roads or trails in the beautiful Kettle Moraine while helping to raise money for Outreach for Hope. The Family Ride begins at 9:00 AM. Registration and event information is available online at The measure you give will be the measure you get back. Luke 6:38 Southwest Interfaith Linking Older Adults with a caring community Mum Plant Sale On Sunday, September 13 and on Wednesday, September 16 you will be able to buy autumn mum plants in a variety of colors to celebrate Grandparents Day. These could be given as gifts or planted in your own yard as a special memorial. All proceeds support Southwest Interfaith Neighborhood Outreach Program. Payment can be made in the form of cash or check. Please see Judy Goodwin, our SW Rep. if you have any questions. Divine Intervention A food and encouragement ministry to the homeless in the Bay View area. We will continue to collect breakfast bars for this worthwhile ministry. Bars may be brought into church and placed in the collection box located in the coat room. Your continued support is appreciated. A special thank you to the Demos and Taddey families for serving dinner to our homeless neighbors on September 18. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink... Matthew 25:35-36 Crop Hunger Walk Fight hunger in our community and around the world! The Greater Milwaukee CROP Walk takes place at the McKinley Marina on Milwaukee s Lakefront on Sunday, October 11. You can participate by either walking in this year s event or by sponsoring a walker with a donation. The money raised helps children and families to fight poverty and hunger in the U.S. and around the world. Watch for more information on this important event in future church bulletins. 7 MEMO FROM MERU AND MULALA I would like to share a really miracle story with you. This young Massai man, Julius Mollel was sent on an errand to the Diocese Office one day. Normally he herded the cattle and although his mother wanted him to stay at home, his brothers insisted that he be allowed to go to school. He was a very good student and when at the Diocese office, saw a notice that a doctor was needed and the education of medical school would be provided. So he applied for this position and was successful. A Synod congregation from Kenosha provided the money to send him to medical school in Tanzania and after he graduated, he came to Milwaukee, to the Meru meeting and we all met and spoke to him. He felt he was so blessed to have received this scholarship that he said he would always be at Nkoaranga Hospital to give care to his people. I was impressed with him and gave him a gift of a very good stethoscope. He did well at the hospital and worked there steadily for 5 years. When I travelled back to Meru for the third time in 2008 with Janet McGinty, I was invited to go into surgery with Dr. Mollel as he was going to remove an ovary and appendix on a patient. I was shocked at the minimal equipment that was there and most of all no anesthesia machine or anesthesiologist. As the patient was prepped for surgery, and an IV was started, before the medication was given, Dr. Mollel said, " We pray now", and every one in the room folded their hands and we prayed for this lady before she was given the IV sedation. She was given a drug called Ketamine which is used in some offices to put animals to sleep for surgery. The only monitor was a blood pressure cuff and her arm kept falling off the table and she was actually moving during the surgery. The patient, fortunately did well, and I asked Dr. Mollel how long she would be in the hospital. He said that she would be there for a few days as she had to walk home and lived quite a distance away. The hospital has no food, and families have to bring the patients food from home and most of them had a kettle like container on their bedside table with cooked rice in it. I write these articles so each of you may realize how much we have in this country in comparison to our brothers and sisters in the Diocese of Meru and other places in the world. Please remember to thank God for the blessings we have and please be willing to pray for these wonderful people that their conditions may improve with the help the partner churches send there. Also, Dr. Mollel will be among those in the next delegation that comes to us in October so many of you may get to meet him in person. Blessings to you all.
