2 IN GOD WE TRUST When we were little children, we viewed our parents through an almost entirely positive lens. They could do nothing wrong in our eyes. Then we became adolescents, and we viewed our parents through an almost entirely negative lens. They could do virtually nothing right in our teenage eyes. And periodically in adolescence, teenagers will slip in and out of a child-like orientation toward their parents as they grow. However, if we had loving parents, we matured to later realize as adults that our parents are basically good and decent people despite their various imperfections. In a similar way, our United States of America has been in its adolescent phase of development arguably since the late 1960 s. With periodically slipping in and out of times of nationalistic fervor, our nation for the past five decades has been marked by a great deal of adolescent-like angst about our national history and heritage. So, while some view our USA as virtually doing no wrong in the world, there are many who view our USA through an almost entirely negative adolescent lens. Of course, the truth is that there is no such thing as a perfect nation. All the nations have negative aspects to their histories and their present realities. Yes, our USA is not perfect, but our history and heritage are not a terrible travesty either. The USA has been by far, and continues to be by far, a great blessing to our world. So, it is indeed right that we should have a healthy sense of patriotism for everything that is good and laudable about our national founding and history and heritage. While acknowledging the bad and learning from it, we uplift and give thanks for the good above all else, and it is the many good aspects of our nation that our national symbols (especially the US Flag) point toward and represent. Nevertheless, as we are on the brink of our 2016 Presidential election, I have to say that we are faced with the most uninspiring election I can remember. Neither of the two major party nominees represent a virtuous choice, and I believe it will be very hard to find anyone who is actually proud of their vote for either of these two. In fact, I don t think hardly anyone is really voting for either of them. Rather, I think that a majority of people are primarily voting against the one they dislike the most. So maybe it is helpful to remember that while we Christians are in this world, we are not of this world (see John 17). After all, our first citizenship is the Kingdom of God in Christ: PHILIPPIANS 3: For many live as enemies of the cross of Christ; I have often told you of them, and now I tell you even with tears. Their end is destruction; their god is the belly; and their glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. And we also ought to recall the following biblical admonition: PSALM 146: 3-5 Do not put your trust in rulers, in mortals, in whom there is no salvation. When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans perish. Happy are those whose salvation is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God The font of life and salvation is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Therefore, whoever our next President is whether it be President Donald Trump or President Hillary Clinton let us always remember our first citizenship in heaven and our true salvation in Christ Jesus. Heavenly Father, raise up elected leaders with honest and humble hearts, so that integrity and righteousness will shine forth in their work. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. Together in Christ, Pastor Tim 2 ETCETERA Our Mission Continues

3 Here are some of the items discussed at the October Church Council meeting: Pastor Tim and Jim & Wendy Haas will have dinner with our new bishop on Tuesday, October 18. Two new furnaces were installed and our other furnaces were serviced. The cost of the furnaces was $5,400 of which $4,652 was received through a special offering request. Servicing the rest of the furnaces was $400. This fall/winter the Building & Grounds committee will focus on cleaning up the west tree line, and at the same time the front ash trees and evergreen tree will be cut down. Carpet cleaning will be scheduled. Gloria Becker and Sandy Ringwall will attend the Meru Bishop installation in Africa next January. A Christmas Rummage Sale in conjunction with the Cookie/Bake Sale will be held December 17. Information will be in the bulletins and newsletter regarding a search for a custodian to replace Gina who will retire in January. Meals to be provided to Divine Intervention will be scheduled. Work will begin on October 17 to install the steeple donated in memory of Gloria Becker s parents, Earl & Eileen Gerner. The Stewardship theme this year is Faithful Giving Is Faithful Living Commitment Sunday is November 20, with temple talks scheduled beginning October 16. A comment was made that our weekly worship service is both inspirational and spirited. The youth will be going to Holy Hill on October 22, then out to dinner. They will hold a brat fry during the Cookie/Christmas Sales. AAA will sponsor an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner on Saturday, November 12, at 4:30 & 6:30PM. Proceeds will go to Little Houses for Veterans Program. For more information on any or all of these items, please check the complete minutes of the meeting posted on the kiosk in the Gathering Space or contact one of your Council representatives. CHURCHES CARING TOGETHER We had a good group that came together for a day of service. Afterwards a meal was shared with other volunteers from the churches of Greenfield, Greendale and Hales Corners. ADORATION EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH 3

4 Our Steeple was installed on October 18. This was a gift to our church in memory of Earl & Eileen Gerner. The Steeple and cross were dedicated during worship on Reformation Sunday, October 30, Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim, till all the world adore his sacred name! FAITHFUL GIVING IS FAITHFUL LIVING Faithful true to one s promise or word; steady, reliable Faithful giving involves making a plan and living it out. It is an opportunity to express our love for God by giving up something we value-our money-as a sacrifice both to meet the needs of the church and a response to God s generous and abundant love. This faithful giving provides us with an opportunity to share our gifts as a response to God s generous grace. It is a way to live out our calling as a member of Adoration, a Christian, to spread the Word of God. Without your weekly offering, there would be no worship, no community of faith, no opportunities for bible study, no partnerships, not to mention our house of worship and the people who work here. Giving materials for 2017 will be mailed out the week of November 6. Take time to reflect upon God s blessings in your life and how you can express your thankfulness by giving back a portion of what He has provided. Pray about it. In Romans, the apostle Paul, talking to the early Christians, says that giving is both a duty and a delight, something we ought to do and something we are pleased to do. Make your plan for faithful giving as part of your faithful living here at Adoration Lutheran Church and bring your commitment to worship on Sunday, November 20. STEWARDSHIP PRAYER I offer this day to you dear God. Thank you for the blessings you have given me. May I use these gifts to build your kingdom. May my actions be a reflection of your love. May what I do today bring others closer to you. May my words be kind and gentle and may they bring joy to others. Today, help me to give back a portion of what you have given me. I ask this in Jesus name. Amen. 4 ETCETERA Our Mission Continues

7 CHRISTMAS COOKIE & BAKE SALE It s time to look in your cookbooks or online for some yummy baked good recipes! Our Annual Cookie/Bake Sale will be held on Saturday, December 17. We need volunteers to bake for our sale in order to make it a success. This year we would like to sell cookies, breads, cakes, pies, & candy. If you like to plan ahead, this is the time to start buying butter and nuts then store them in the freezer. The freezer is the best place for longest shelf life. If you use shortening, it s best to store it in the refrigerator. Please use the freshest ingredients to ensure the best baked goods. We will be packaging on Friday, December 16, so please have your items here before that date. More detailed information to follow as we get closer to the sale. Thank you in advance for your support and donations. The Evangelism Committee CHILDREN S CHRISTMAS PROGRAM CHRISTMAS RUMMAGE SALE The Partnership Committee is hosting a Christmas Rummage Sale on Saturday, December 17 in conjunction with our Christmas Bake Sale. Funds received from the sale will be sent to Mulala Parish to help support our Tanzania partnership. You can help make this sale a success by bringing in your unwanted Christmas decorations and ornaments. Items may be brought in and placed in the old youth room just off the fellowship hall. Thank you! December 18 9:00 AM Invite your family and friends to this special morning of worship. Following the service stay for fellowship and have a piece of birthday cake for Jesus. BRAT FRY Our youth group will be serving up brats during the Christmas Rummage and Cookie/Bake Sale. Help support them by buying a brat for lunch, Or take home a few for dinner. MERU AND MULALA Imagine Tanzania! Imagine: The magnificence of Mt. Kilimanjar o, over 19,000 feet high, with the cobalt blue Afr ican sky on the horizon. Imagine: Her ds of black and white str iped zebr as, each patter n differ ent, gr azing on the Ser engeti plains. Imagine: A family of elephants wander ing single file, babies in the center, to the r iver to get a dr ink. Imagine: That you can hear the amazing har mony of the Mulala par ish choir singing a song called Darling Jesus and know that they totally feel this intimacy with their Lord. Realize: Those things ar e the beauty of Afr ica and Tanzania, but the tr uth is that although ther e ar e incredible wonders of the world, there is also drought, hunger, orphans, widows, lack of education and people in extreme poverty. When we suffered in the record breaking hot temperatures, we could seek refuge in the air conditioning, with large cold drinks, ice cubes, and even swimming pools. Our partners in the Meru and Mulala have none of these things. Most have no or limited electricity, no central air, no refrigerators and have to haul water from the river, and boil it to drink. Children are hungry and cattle are dying. Lack of education just extends their level of poverty. There are not food stamps or government assistance. We have become their hope... So, please, please remember these faithful people in your prayers and help as you are able. ~ Sandy Ringwall ADORATION EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH 7
