Because of our Lord Jesus Christ, however, Pentecost is also associated with the Holy Spirit that Jesus proclaimed. Before he ascended into the heavenly realm, Jesus promised that the missionary work of his Church would spread out, by the power of the Holy Spirit, from Jerusalem to all the world. In Acts 2 the Holy Spirit empowered the early disciples to speak in many languages, revealing the all-encompassing nature of the gospel message. The Holy Spirit is the Universal God within us who blesses us with a deep, intuitive awareness of God's truth, grace, presence and power. For our own benefit and the benefit of all, the Holy Spirit calls, enlightens, refines and empowers us. 2 WE ARE ONE UJAMAA IN CHRIST Our Tanzanian brothers and sisters use a special Swahili word to describe their understanding of community. The word is ujamaa and it is most accurately translated as family-hood. It is a unifying term that the Tanzanian government has urged all Tanzanians to embrace in order to transcend their various tribal identities in favor of a unified national identity. And the concept of ujamaa is often represented by carvings of interlocking people mutually uplifting, encouraging and caring for one another. As Christians, we can also lay claim to the meaning of ujamaa, because we also have an identity that transcends our various tribal identities. In Christ Jesus our Savior and Lord, we have a transcendent identity that supersedes everything else: Democrat or Republican, male or female, heterosexual or homosexual, Tanzanian or American, White or Black or Brown. EPHESIANS 2: So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God [the ujamaa of God], built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God. Yes, we are one ujamaa (family-hood) in Christ! Therefore, as one family-hood in Christ, we are spiritually and relationally joined and knit together to form one mutually uplifting, encouraging and caring community of Christ. We are laypersons and ordained clergy, congregations and pastors, synods and bishops, with each doing their part according to the gifts God has given them, all for the purpose of building up each other in the faith, hope and love of Yeshua (Jesus). EPHESIANS 4: The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ We must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body s growth in building itself up in love. As we elect a new Greater Milwaukee Synod Bishop, let us keep in mind the whole Ujamaa of Christ. And let us acknowledge the important place of each part of the Ujamaa of Christ. Lay parishioners are called by God to the ministry of Stewardship and Evangelism, pastors are called by God to the ministry of Word and Sacrament, and bishops are called by God to the apostolic ministry of representing Christ and his Church, particularly as the chief priest and pastor of a synod/diocese. And bishops have the apostolic ministry of guarding the faith and unity of the Church as well as acting in Christ s name for the reconciliation of the world and the building up of the Church. Together in the Ujamaa of Christ, Pastor Tim 2 ETCETERA Our Mission Continues

7 MEMO FROM MERU AND MULALA Some of you may have heard this story, but I was thinking about it again last night and thought I would share it. The first time I went to Meru was in 1999, and there were no partnerships then, so I think the Diocese got a list of families who were willing to house us for a few days. I was the first one to get dropped off---all alone--- and the man of the house, Moses Makayo came up to the van and started arguing with the driver. It seems they were not expecting me till the next day and the wife wasn't home and he was clearly upset. This was the only house in the immediate area and monkeys were swinging through the trees and I began to be very scared. What if he didn't want me there---what would he do---what if I didn't want to be there---what would I do? He finally led me into the house and his daughter made us a cup of tea and then he showed me to a room that would be my bedroom while I was there. There is no running water, and no toilet etc. I thought if I gave him my gift, he would be happier. Larry's uncle was a priest in The U.P. and used Lake Superior agates to make beautiful jewelry. So I had a cross made for Moses to wear around his neck of these beautiful stones from America. He got very upset again and said " Do you want them to kill me"? I did not know the custom and was completely in shock when I later found out that only the Bishop is allowed to wear any kind of pectoral cross. Soon the wife came home and she opened the door and invited me to supper, which I remember was very good. After supper, they wanted me to do a Bible study and I asked if they had an English Bible (hoping they didn't) as I was not at all prepared for this. Out came the English Bible and I was shaking and thought what should I do. I decided to just open the Bible to any page and we would discuss what was there. Well, God was guiding my hand as I opened to Psalm 121. I was looking out their window at Mt Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro in the distance and read from Psalm 121: I lift up my eyes to the hills from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. What could have been better to comfort me? The rest of the visit went well and after a few days, I was sent to another home and I will tell that story another time. God bless you all and please pray for these amazing people. ~Sandy Ringwall Worship with Bishop Jeff of our Greater Milwaukee Synod ELCA Sunday June 12, :00 AM Year to Date Offerings of $1, for ELCA World Hunger Thank you for your generous gifts!
