2 GOD GIVES THE GROWTH AND THE HARVEST As I write this my final article for the Etcetera Newsletter, I am excited and hopeful for Adoration ELCA. There are a variety of reasons for this, but here are just a few of the many good things happening at Adoration + Road construction blocking Adoration was finally finished at the end of July + More kids are participating in the children s messages during worship + More children are attending Sunday School + Adoration has been welcoming into the congregation some wonderful new members + A strong Bible study culture is developing within the congregation + An increase in biblical literacy, Christian spirituality and devotions, and interfaith understanding + Many and continuing works of charitable service + Grace-filled worship services, inclusive fellowship, and more Because of all this, and much more, I am confident that God has prepared Adoration for a coming harvest. I am convinced that the next pastor will be able to enjoy with Adoration a time of amazing congregational growth and flowering, and I am reminded of the words of our Lord Jesus who said, One sows and another reaps (John 4:37). In addition, I am reminded of the words of the Apostle Paul who wrote the following in First Corinthians chapter three: I CORINTHIANS 3: 7-9 Neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will be rewarded according to their labor. For we are God s servants, working together; you are God s field, God s building. I have been blessed by God to accompany Adoration ELCA as pastor over the past 7+ years. God has used me to sow and plant the seeds of the good news of Jesus Christ for all people, to tend and weed and water God s field, but to not enjoy the coming fullness of God s harvest. That will be for another. It has been a true blessing to walk the journey of faith with such an outstanding congregation of amazingly faithful people over these years. Together we have grown in the biblical gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, we have learned much (both individually and communally), and I will always treasure the years my family and I shared with Adoration. Please know that the Greater Milwaukee Synod will assist in the smooth transition from my departure to finding a new pastor, and it will provide resources for interim pastoral coverage until a new pastor is called and installed. Also, my last Sunday will be November 18, 2018, and you all are welcome to attend worship that day as we celebrate another Holy Baptism that morning, and as Hilary, Nick, Grace and I say farewell. 2 ETCETERA Our Mission Continues

3 In conclusion, because the Word of God within Holy Scripture has a miraculous way of best saying what we wish to say, and even adding deeper meaning than we intend, I offer to you the following Bible passage from Isaiah 55 that best articulates my understanding of God s amazing purposes in calling me as pastor at Adoration and my sense of Adoration s bright future: ISAIAH 55: 8-12 My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. For you shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. During the month of October we were blessed with five households who joined our family of Christian faith. 4 CHURCH COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS Here are some of the items discussed at the OCTOBER Church Council meeting: There are members of the church that feel we need to shorten the Sharing of the Peace. This concern was passed on to Sean McGinty to bring forward to the Worship & Music Committee. Commitment Sunday is November 11. The Annual Budget Meeting with brunch following worship is also November 11. Together in Mission 2019 event will be held on February 16 at St. John Lutheran Church in Brookfield. In Sharon Anderson s absence, Sean McGinty presented the Financial & Treasurer s Report. We were $375 ahead for September. October 6 was Fall Clean Up Day at the church. The gravel pile by the shed was shoveled, wheel barreled and raked out along the parking lot where the new grass was planted by the city this summer. The weeds in the playground area were removed and windows cleaned. Thanks to everyone who helped on this day! A motion was made by Jim Haas and seconded by Sean McGinty to approve $700 to repair the cracks in the parking lot with the company to be determined. Motion carried. There are some concerns about mowing the church grounds. The grass is being cut too short and there are sharp turns from the lawn mower making deep ruts in the walking path of our labyrinth. Trunk or Treat is October 28. Christina Gavitt will work the inside church events with the help of Nick and Grace Singleton. There will be games and treats. Jessica Dudzik will run the advertising for the event. It is also posted on Facebook. An interest survey will be included with the commitment cards to see what interests the congregation members have and possibly create new interest groups for congregational members. Kathy Albrecht has decided to have the 2019 Diner s Club during the months of January through June only. Larry Markiewicz reported we had a successful Meru Day of Prayer. Seven people have committed to being part of the 2019 delegation to Tanzania. Tentative date for this trip is June 27 to July 9, The Partnership Committee is working on an anniversary book of our partnership with Mulala. IS IT I LORD? Hearing God s Call As we begin our new fall stewardship theme Is It I Lord? take time to reflect upon God s blessings in your life and how you can express your thankfulness by giving back a portion of what He has provided. Pray about it. Giving material will be mailed the beginning of November. Commitment Sunday is November 11. Following worship we will share a meal together and then discuss the future work and ministry of our church at our Budget Meeting. The more the merrier! 14TH ANNUAL WE LOVE OUR CHURCH AUCTION December 9 following worship That s right, it s our 14th annual WE LOVE OUR CHURCH Auction! Our membership is blessed to have so many talented people who do woodworking, quilting, painting, crafts. and much more. This was demonstrated last year by what was donated. I am asking once again for your generous donations to help support our church. Perhaps you would like to donate one of your famous cakes, pies, or batch of cookies. Whatever you can do to support this auction will be greatly appreciated. Last year $2, was raised, let s see if we can top that amount! 6 CHRISTMAS COOKIE & BAKE SALE Sunday, December 15 9:00 AM 1:00 PM It s time to start looking in your cookbooks or online for some yummy baked good recipes! Our Bake Sale is quickly approaching and we need many volunteers to bake for our sale to make it a success. This year we would like to sell cookies, breads, cakes, pies, & candy. If you like to plan ahead, this is the time to start buying butter and nuts then store them in the freezer. The freezer is the best place for longest shelf life. If you use shortening, it s best to store it in the refrigerator. Please use the freshest ingredients to ensure the best baked goods. We will be packaging on Friday, December 14 beginning at 9:00 AM, so please have your items here before that date. This tasty event supports our church and allows others who don t bake the opportunity to purchase a variety of delicious baked goods. Thank you in advance for your support and donations. The Evangelism Committee CHRISTMAS RUMMAGE SALE Sunday, December 15 9:00 AM 1:00 PM The Partnership Committee is hosting a Christmas Rummage Sale on Saturday, December 15, in conjunction with our Christmas Bake Sale. Funds received from the sale will be sent to Mulala Parish to help support our Tanzania partnership. You can help make this sale a success by bringing in your unwanted Christmas decorations and ornaments. Items may be brought in and placed in the old youth room just off the fellowship hall. Thank you! CHRISTMAS WORSHIP SERVICES Monday, December 24 Christmas Eve 4:30 & 9:00 PM Tuesday, December 25 Christmas Day 10:00 AM MERU & MULALA Our Partners in Ministry MERU DAY OF PRAYER 2018 Adoration participated in the Synod wide joint day of prayer with our brothers and sisters in the Meru Diocese, Tanzania. Across the miles we celebrated our partnership through song, offering and most importantly prayer. Thank you to all who contributed to the love offering. We raised $400 for the Professional Education Fund, which provides financial aide to pastors, evangelists and teachers seeking to complete a certification or degree. Thank you also to those who purchased Tanzanian items from the Third World Shoppe, which we had on display. All monies from those sales will go to the Synod Meru Partnership Committee, who will use it to support needs identified by the Meru Diocese. Asante sana! 7 REPAIRERS OF THE BREACH ASCENSION FOOD PANTRY As the weather is changing it is time to collect items for the homeless. We will be collecting for both men and women through the month of November. Coats, jackets, pants, jeans, socks, shoes, boots, bus tickets, blankets, disposable razors, toothpaste, toothbrushes and Chap stick. A collection bin is located in the front entry way of church. Thank you for supporting the less fortunate with your generous donations. Our food cart has been overflowing with your generous gifts of food. Thank you for your continued support during the holiday season. A special thank you to Ted & Mardy Lazaris for delivering our food gifts each month. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16 ELCA WORLD HUNGER Year to Date offerings of $2,36612 for World Hunger. Thank you! Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God s grace in its various forms. 1:Peter 4:10 SOUTHWEST INTERFAITH OLDER ADULT PROGRAMS Volunteers are needed to provide rides to run errands, appointments, shopping, and other transportation needs. Help is needed with minor household repairs, yard work and snow shoveling. Volunteering is on a flexible basis, (when you are available).
