The idea is that we should be tolerant of the differences that come from race, religion and cultural origins. This idea of tolerance is often extended to the issue of behavior as well. Showing tolerance does have some value, as its practice can help us to avoid violence as well as hurtful words. It does have its limitations, however, and falls short of what Jesus teaches and models for us. Tolerance of our differences can take the form of cold civility, or even of thinly veiled hostility. God calls us as his children to do more than tolerate others. We are commanded to love. In Leviticus 19:18 God commands the Israelites, Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD. (NIV) In the gospels, Jesus repeats this command to love our neighbors, places it next to our love for God in terms of importance, and adds to it the teaching that we are to love our enemies. As followers of Jesus Christ, mere tolerance of our neighbors is not sufficient. Instead, we must embrace the greater ethic of love. When we encounter someone with different political views, we are called to love. When we meet someone who speaks a different language, or has a different skin color, or comes from a different cultural background, we are called to love. If our neighbor male or female, five years old or ninety-five the obligation to love remains the same. So what does love for our neighbors look like? In 1 Corinthians 13 we find this profound description of love: Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. (1 Corinthians 13:4-8a) On February 14th, so many Americans will be thinking about and celebrating love. As God s children, let us embrace the command to love our neighbors as ourselves and let us live it out all month long! FEBRUARY FLOWER/CANDY DELIVERY To help offset the costs of the upcoming Ladies Retreat, we are asking for your participation in our Valentine fundraiser. We would like to deliver candy and / or flower(s) to a special person of your choice during the month of February. Starting the week of January 29th, we will be accepting orders to deliver candy/flower(s) the following Sunday. A note card will be available for you to personalize your delivery and the cost is $1.50/carnation - $2.25/rose - $1.50/candy bar If the person you are sending a flower(s) to is not at Sunday School the following week when we deliver We will make every attempt to see that they receive their flower/card from you the following week. We have been very lucky that the flowers have kept very well in order for us to deliver. If it is a candy bar that you are sending and they are not in Sunday School we will put it in the refrigerator with their name on it and try to re-deliver it the following week. We will be doing the bulk of our sales by orders, but we will have some limited items for same day cash and carry. If anyone is interested in a personalized small (or large) flower arrangement at a reasonable price, please see or call Donna Rowland at You can give Donna a specific dollar range amount that you would want to spend and she will make an arrangement within that price range. Also, as an alternative to the above, if you would like to place names in the February 12 th church bulletin in memory/in honor of someone, at a cost of $1/name, there will be a box and order forms on the table in back of the sanctuary for you to take advantage of this. The DEADLINE FOR THE BULLETIN NAMES is February 5th. The dinner will benefit the Mission Trip summer of Everyone going on the Mission Trip is encouraged to help serve/clean up during all Seafood Fests. Tickets can be purchased in advance from Debb Leiphart, sign up on the sheet located on the Welcome Table, or call the church office at to reserve your tickets. Cost: $22 adults; $10-children (6-12); free for children 5 & under. The meal will be prepared and served by Big Bob s BBQ at Christ Church and can be ordered for eat in or carry out. Desserts and helpers are needed, please see sign up sheets on Welcome Table. Final Date for 2017: March 18th 25% of the cost of your meal goes to the Women s Retreat!
