Candy/Poinsettias.8 Practicing Thanks-Giving These days, a good portion of my life involves practice. Nathan, Alex and Ryan each are playing soccer this fall, and they are on three different teams. Their teams usually practice two times per week. Even splitting the responsibility of taking kids to soccer with Beth, I still get to watch three or four practices a week. I see the boys and their teammates work on dribbling, passing, corner kicks and defense. They run laps to develop the conditioning they need for the games on the weekend. The coaches talk to them about staying in their position, and they work on teamwork. Yes, a lot of time, energy and teaching go into preparing kids for their soccer games. If the team wants to play well together, be competitive, and have fun playing as a team, they have to put the work in during practice. Just as practice is necessary in sports, it is also needed in many areas of every day life. Before teenagers take a driver s test and earn their license, they need many hours of driving practice with an adult. Before a theater company puts on a play, they spend days and weeks practicing the lines and playing out the scenes away from the public eye. Airline pilots use flight simulators to practice what they should do when an emergency has crippled a plane, or when bad weather conditions making landing difficult. When it comes to caring for people s health, doctors are said to practice medicine. Truly, practice takes place all around us. In this month of November, we have a great holiday, Thanksgiving, that can remind us and help us to practice an activity. The particular practice that I have in mind is good for our soul, good for our relationships with others, and good for our relationship with God. Thanksgiving Day focuses our thoughts on showing gratitude, on giving thanks. While we may often overlook giving thanks for our blessings, this one day a year helps us to remember and to give thanks where it is due. Here is a challenge for all of us in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving Day. Let s take time each day to practice giving thanks. We can thank our loved ones for the ways they help us and show us love. We can thank the people who serve us at the grocery store or at the restaurant. We can thank God daily for life, and health, and so many good blessings. As we practice giving thanks daily, we may find that our attitude is brighter it s hard to feel down when you have just celebrated half a dozen or a dozen ways in which you are blessed. We may also find that our relationships with the people around us are healthier and more joyful. Our relationship with God could be affected, too. As we intentionally recognize God s goodness to us day after day, our delight in God could increase. Finally, once we have established the good habit of giving thanks by practicing it in the beginning weeks of November, let s keep it going and going long after the Thanksgiving leftovers are put away. Happy Thanks-giving this month! Peace to you in Christ, Pastor Jason

6 And my God will liberally supply (fill to the full) your every need according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4: 19 1 Year COLLECTION November 1st thru December 6th Accepted donations: Gently used toys, books, games, movies (dvds only) puzzles, bikes/ride-ons, craft items (excluding used crayons/markers), Batteries (all sizes), masking and/or packing tape, Transparent tape. (please no stuff animals unless they are brand new) If possible please clean toys and mark them clean What is Project Toy Box? Project Toy Box is a toy outreach ministry hosted by Christ United Methodist Church, Yorkana. This ministry targets families experiencing financial difficulties during the Christmas season. Although presents are often associated with the commercialism of Christmas, our mission is to help families unwrap the love of Jesus Christ in the gifts received through this ministry during their time of need. How does it work? Gently used toys, books, puzzles, games, movies, craft items (excluding used crayons, markers) and bikes/rideons, are collected in early December. Communications regarding this event are provided to U.M. Cluster and Eastern York School District as well as select area agencies to distribute to families in need. After cleaning and sorting the items, a toy store is set up and the doors are opened for parents and guardians to come and collect gifts for children in their care at no cost to them. Volunteers are available to assist guests in their shopping experience. In addition, refreshments, gift wrap services, and a Kidz Zone are available to provide a complete shopping experience surrounded by the Savior s love. Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord your God which He has given you. Deuteronomy 16: 17 Page 6 JOY M CORCORAN Transferred to The Church Triumphant Joy M. Time flies when you're having fun! In the first two months, I have already seen amazing growth in the children. They come to preschool each day ready and eager to learn. We had our first field trip to Flinchbaugh's Orchard. We had a great time picking pumpkins and apples. We also got to go on a hayride and have a yummy snack. As we transition into November, we will be focusing on Thanksgiving and giving thanks to God for all he has given us. We will also continue to work on counting, the alphabet, shapes, and colors. Thank you for all of your support so far this school year! In His Service, Mindi Hauck Preschool Director The GOODNEWSletter

8 Every box tells a story. When children received shoebox gifts in the village of Zabriceni, Moldova, it brought a spiritual transformation to the Caradjov family. Danu and his brother Cristi were excited to receive the gifts through the small church in their village. Their little sister, Maricica, was also overjoyed. The boys immediately donned the hats they got in their boxes. Maricica loved the colorful crayons she found. Cristi s favorite gift was a car. Danu was excited to receive school supplies. I was so happy receiving the shoebox! Cristi said. I am so thankful to those who packed the shoebox with things I needed. But the greatest gift that the three children received was hearing the Gospel and coming to faith in Jesus Christ.
