The United States, Mexico and the islands in the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea have seen one natural disaster after another in the last six weeks. Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Katia and Maria have taken lives and destroyed billions of dollars in property. On September 7, an earthquake off the coast of Mexico caused nearly a hundred deaths. This past week, another earthquake near Mexico City took more than 200 lives. Have you found the onslaught of one disaster after another to be emotionally and spiritually troubling? As I have reflected on these troubles, a passage from Luke s Gospel has come to mind: Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. Jesus answered, Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered in this way? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Or those eighteen who died when the Tower in Siloam fell on them do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. (Luke 13:1-5, NIV) In response to the murder of the Galileans and to the loss of life from a tower, Jesus does not enter into a long discussion of the problem of evil. He does not really address the question of why God permits or sends such suffering. Instead, Jesus refers to these dire troubles as warnings to the people. He tells the people that they need to repent, or they will all perish in a similar way. Likewise, I am not going to address the why question when it comes to the natural disasters of the past six weeks. (If you would like to talk about why God allows such events, call me or stop by the office for a conversation). I am, however, going to raise the issue of repentance. Hurricanes and earthquakes are powerful reminders of how frail we are as human beings. They invite us to an awareness of our human limits. With all our science and technology, we cannot stop hurricanes or control earthquakes. Natural disasters point us toward humility, and they remind us that our own life could end any day. This raises the critical question: am I spiritually ready to face God s judgment if today is my last day of life? In Psalm 139 David made a request of God that we can echo, and so be prepared to encounter God s judgment: Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting Psalm 139:23-24, NIV. Peace, Pastor Jason

8 Our church will be participating in this children s Christmas outreach program in November. Every child who gets a box must attend a Bible study program to learn about Jesus. Pray how God can use you to demonstrate His love in packing 1, 2, or 3 boxes for a child in poverty. Start with an empty shoebox Choose items for a boy or girl (ages 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14) Pack toys, clothing, school supplies, and hygiene items (Lists with specific items for ideas will be available at church) (No candy or toothpaste this year due to custom regulations) Pray that the child who receives your gift will be blessed and come to know the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior Drop off the filled shoebox with nine dollars for overseas shipping at our church November 12th through the 19th Shoeboxes will be provided if you need them. Specific details and labels will be available too. Let s make this year the best one for all the children around the world who still need to hear about God and His love for them. Christmas Child Coordinator Kim Sterner TRUNK N TREAT EVENT COMING! This is the 3rd year the UMW have planned this FREE event for our community. Last year we had over 300 children attend, praise God! This is a wonderful and fun outreach to our community. In addition to the UM Women participating, our Youth Group, 2 Girl Scout troops, Sarah, Trevor, our fun parking lot attendants, Yorkana Fire Co. and the trunk sponsors gave their time and talents to make this event successful! So in anticipation of having 300 or more children attend this year, we are asking for donations of candy or monetary gifts to buy candy (candy will be given to the trunk sponsors to supplement what they hand out) Donations of candy can be put in the church office. Monetary donations can be designated on your offering envelope or envelopes in the pews marked Trunk n Treat. Want to sponsor a trunk? All you do is decorate your trunk and hand out something to the children as they come by. In the past everyone has had very clever ideas and it s so fun to see everyone get in the spirit of fall. As adults this is your opportunity to dress up and have fun sharing the love of Christ to the children and their families! Sign up today at the sign up tables to sponsor a trunk. We would like 20 trunks! Page 8 The GOODNEWSletter
