He has decided that he needs to give someone the power to cure the sick and to raise the dead. After looking through the whole world, he has chosen you as the one to whom he will give these incredible powers. But he wants to make sure that you really want these wonderful gifts that he is going to give to you, so he asks you Would you like me to give you the power to cure the sick and to raise the dead? Without a moment s hesitation you say, Yes, Lord. That would be wonderful. I would be able to do so much good if I had those powers. And so Jesus gives you those powers. Sounds quite unbelievable, doesn t it? And yet, that is exactly what has happened to so many of us. Today s Gospel shows Jesus curing the woman who had suffered from hemorrhages for twelve years. Then he goes on to raise the young daughter of Jairus from the dead. And Jesus has given us those same powers. You and I can cure the sick and we can help people, who were as good as dead, come back to life. How can we do this? How can we exercise these powers? The secret lies in our reading from Paul to the Corinthians. The background to this reading is the great famine that struck in the land of Palestine, in which many people were deprived of their livelihood. There was a great drought resulting in a famine in which many of the Christians of Jerusalem suffered because they did not have enough to eat. When word of this came to Paul, he determined to enlist the aid of all the Gentile churches for the relief of Jewish Christians. He thought it would be a marvelous way of expressing the oneness of the body of Christ and so, wherever he went, he told them about the need in Jerusalem. All of this brings us to the answer to our question: How can we cure the sick and raise the dead? Our power to cure and to raise the dead lies in the act of sharing. Through sharing what we have, others can become cured, and those who are living inhuman lives can be raised out of their miserable existence, to become human once more. It takes financial resources to bring medicine and people to those who are suffering from sickness. It takes financial resources to allow people to escape from inhuman living conditions to live a life worthy of a human person. St. Paul urges us to an attitude of sharing. He says that, as a matter of equality your abundance at the present time should supply their needs. And that, Whoever had much did not have more, and whoever had little did not have less. Paul did not ask us to live in poverty. We don t have to empty out our bank accounts, sell all of our possessions, and give up our home. No, we are asked to share our resources. There is a rather silly saying that says, You can never be too thin or have too much money. The Scriptures tells us that if others don t have what they need, and we have too much, then in order to be like Christ, we are to share from that abundance. Yes, it is possible to have too much money. We have the power to cure the sick and raise the people from inhuman living conditions. May we have the courage and the will to use that power. The Pastoral al Offices will be closed Tuesday, July 3 through Friday, July 6 in celebration ebra of our nation s Independence nden ence Day holiday. Daily mass will be celebrated. ed. Business hours will resume Monday, July 9th.

4 Holy Spirit Catholic Church July 1, 2018 Now that the clean-up is over, I would like to take a moment to thank some of the sweet as pie people who helped to make our annual VBS such an amazing week! First, to our Site Coordinators Sharon Bush, Danille Brunson, Rachel Cromwell, Stacie De Dominicis, Amanda Kowal, Tammie Marceleno, Karen Moloughney, Tammy Rios, Debra Seeley and Mario Tiambeng who ensured everything was set and ready to go, which included our kick off, music, crafts, storytelling, games, snacks and Preschool. Next, our 29 Café Crew Leaders Matt Acuna, Stephanie Aguilar, Alejandra Balbuena, Anthony Bierschenk, Hayden Brunson, Mikaela Fernando, Olivia Goerig, Christian Holmes, Corrinne Jordan, Delaney Kowal, Benjamin Lopez, Letty Lopez, Julia & Julian May, Isabel McAllister, Kaitlyn Moloughney, Monica Nieto, Katie Picha, Alayna Prasifka, Julia Ramos, Tiki Romero, Ryan Justin, Maria & Mercy Sailale, Joaquin Serna, Julia Sipriano, Kimberly Terron, Chloe Turner-Rodriguez and Abigail Trapp who each had a very spirited crew of mixed age children to keep energized yet controlled for the whole week plus Michelle Hernandez, Kandess Mejia and Amanda Seeley, our adult Café Group Supervisors, who were responsible for 9 crews to keep an eye on. Additionally, thanks to Jayda Kile and Colten Prasifka for filling in everyday for those having to leave early or were absent and to Melisa Limones, Almira Padilla and Debbie Timmermann for running the VBS Office. We also thank all the remaining teens and adults who volunteered their time and talents at the various VBS sites for the week, especially Chief Scoop (Leeza Meyer) and Scramble (Josh Montemayor). Without everyone s assistance, VBS would not be the success it is for the children of our community. Also, a HUGE shout-out to the Soda Shoppe Snack crew Head Chef, Karen Moloughney and Sous Chef, Olimpia McAllister, Julie Aguinaga, Bradlee Brunson, Ernesto Garza, Erika & Jordan Lyons, Colette Peterson, Geri Salazar and Otto Santiago for all their assistance with this year s food preparation. This group of volunteers was absolutely astounding! EVERY DAY, they served breakfast to 200+ children/parents, snacks to all 240 VBS children/crew leaders AND lunch to 235+ children/parents...wow! Plus, on Friday, they prepared our Closing Celebration luncheon and cleaned the dining room, kitchen and gym (Irving & Holmes families) like I haven t seen before. And speaking of our Closing Celebration, thanks to Rachel Cromwell and her Jukebox Music crew Josh Acuna, Sasha Aguilar, Hannah Erdman, Isaac Garcia, Alexandrea & Lori Holmes, Jessica Huckeba, Rachel Irving, Jackson Kowal, Isaac Martinez, Junior Romero, Max Toups and Jacqueline Vega for the awesome Friday Closing Celebration performance! We also send out special thanks of appreciation to the many parishioners who generously donated food items for Soda Shoppe Snacks or who gave us very nice monetary donations towards the purchase of needed VBS snack/ craft items, especially Anna Barclay (love our new Fuji Instax Mini Camera!), Peggy Dover, Donna Greenlee, Pat Murphy, Colette Peterson, Colleen Ryan and Alex Sabo. Plus, a huge thanks to our set-up and tear-down crew (the lobby does not magically turn into a soda shoppe/garage scene...lol) - Veronica & Tony Houston, Mary Gruhlke, Mary & Scott Jorgensen, Mike Lemmon, Melisa Limones & Family and Jack Ramsden. And with all this being said, VBS would not have been what it was this year without the financial support of Holy Spirit s very own Knights of Columbus. Because of their very generous monetary contribution, we were able to scholarship 145 children. Additionally, the KC s purchased ALL of the children s VBS T-shirts, thus the lower registration fee. This allowed us the opportunity to offer the new breakfast and lunch service this year. So with heartfelt gratitude, we thank you, KC s, for partnering with us to provide the children of our parish, and our community, with such a wonderful faith-filled experience! And with much love in my heart, I thank my two cohorts in fine dining crime, Lisa Estrada and Cindy Meyer, for their tremendous love and support during this past week, especially since I had a horrible summer head cold the entire week of VBS. Who says God does not have a incredible sense of humor?!? Cindy even did shopping and stocking for me on Tuesday so I could go home early and rest. I really don t know what I would have done without these two amazing women all week. And neither does my husband, Steve, who s really glad the week is over! He s a good man. And if I have forgotten anyone, well, I truly apologize...i m still kinda pooped and my head is still a bit clogged up but nothing a nice vacation won t take care of... General Registration for the 2018/19 Faith Formation continues through the month of July. You can pick up registration paperwork during the normal work week, Monday-Thursday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. (NO FRIDAYS; it s our clean-up day!). You can contact Deborah, Devyn, Lindee or Lisa with any questions regarding Children s Faith Formation, Youth Ministry, First Communion and/or Confirmation preparation. Because July is our only downtime and many of the FF staff members are taking vacation before the busy month of August arrives, you might want to call ahead to ensure someone is in the office to assist your with your registration needs...just to be on the safe side!
