2 Holy Spirit Catholic Church July 15, 2018 From The Desk of Father Eugene Messengers of God s Word Today The mission of the twelve in today s gospel is a sort of internship to test their ability to carry the message after the resurrection. Mission comes from the word missio, meaning to send. So the disciples are sent to deliver a message that is not their own. But this message is not like a packaged parcel with a prepaid stamp on it waiting to be delivered to the recipient, perhaps with the requirement of delivery confirmation signature. The packaging and manner of delivery involve the carrier himself. It's not a drop off and leave kind of message. The disciples lives must look like the message they carry and intend to deliver. It is a message that is not their own, yet they are not detached from it for a disciple must be like his master when fully trained (Lk: 6:40). St. Francis of Assisi captures this vividly when told his followers: Preach the good news, use words if necessary. Pre-mission instruction indicates avoiding distractions that come with the self so as to remain focused on the object of the mission. They are to trust the hospitality of their hosts but more importantly they must preach the message of repentance and healing. Remember, this stint would prepare them for the post-resurrection full time ministry when Christ would only be with them in spirit. By virtue of our baptismal calling, we are sent today like the disciples. Our baptism confers on us the benefits of being prophets who carry the word of God. The vows include the striving to reject the lure of the devil, and his empty promises; to believe in God, and the truths revealed to us through Jesus Christ. Some contemporary saints like Mother Theresa and Pope John Paul ll have modeled for us how to be evangelizers and missionaries to our modern world. The first task of a missionary is to strive daily to grow in union with Christ. Holiness of life is a constant effort to let God into your life, and persevere to stay in his presence and love every day. A part time, lukewarm, cherry picking Christian cannot effectively embody the message. Jesus pre-warned the disciples about the possibility of rejection, and the risk of being a messenger. Many a time people attack the messenger. Therefore, the disciples must remember the instruction: Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them (Mk 6: 11). They must not employ coercion or force. Last week's gospel reminds us that Jesus was amazed at the lack of faith and rejection among his own people. But the risk of rejection has never deterred prophets. The gentiles became adopted children of God as a result of rejection of the good news which reveals that the election of God s people is universal. God always equips missionaries with courage, knowledge, and wisdom to be messengers of his word. As baptized Christians, we carry God s word as missionaries. The first territory to evangelize is the self, your family: the domestic church, workplace, social groups, and the larger society. The post-resurrection mandate to go and proclaim the good news is given to the church. It is through this mission that we, members of the body of Christ respond to the call to holiness. 3 Holy Spirit Catholic Church July 15, 2018 Youth Ministry Liturgy Thank you to all of those helping with the National Down Syndrome Congress this weekend in Dallas! What a beautiful way to support a pro-life cause! Our next Young Adult gathering will be July 23rd at 7 p.m.! Permission slips are due for our Homeless Sleepout on Wednesday, July 25th! This is open to all high schoolers. We will sleep in boxes in the courtyard in solidarity with those who do not have a home. In the morning we will volunteer at the North Texas Food Bank. Open Youth Room continues for the whole month of July! Join us Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for games, kickball and popsicles! 4 Holy Spirit Catholic Church July 15, 2018 FAITH FORMATION REGISTRATION is currently underway, that s what! General Registration for the upcoming 2018/19 Faith Formation year continues through the months of July & August. You can contact Deborah, Devyn, Lindee or Lisa with any questions regarding Children s Faith Formation, Youth Ministry, First Communion/Confirmation preparation or RCIA. Just a reminder that a minimum payment of 50% is required for all new paperwork with the balance due by August 1 in order for your child to be placed on a class roster. Reminder statements have already been mailed so that you don t forget! Please don t wait till the last minute.it s so hard for us to plan for the appropriate number of classes needed and ensure we have the proper number of trained, SEP screened adult catechists available and ready to go if we re inundated at the end of August. Sometimes, we simply can t do it, and FYI the 11:00 Faith Formation time slot is filling up fast. Also, you have to pay your balance in full at the time of registration if you wait till August. So don t delay! You can pick up registration paperwork during the normal work week, Monday-Thursday between 10 a.m. & 4 p.m. (please, no FRIDAYS; it s our short, clean-up day). However, if these hours are not doable due to work schedules, please give our office a call so that we can work out other arrangements. Also, due to vacation schedules (since July is our only downtime), please feel free to contact the Faith Formation Office before heading over to ensure we are actually in the office to help you with your paperwork. On-Site Faith Formation registration will take place on Sunday, August 5 and Sunday, August 12 after all the MORNING masses in the dining room. We will have food & fellowship, courtesy of Community Life! FAITH FORMATION CATECHISTS & TEEN AIDES: I know need to know of your intent to return for the 2018/19 Faith Formation year, please...even if it s no. Once I return from vacation, I will begin looking at the vacancies and how best to fill them. Catechist training will begin the second week of August so watch for more information in late July. We need YOU to help pass on the Good News of Jesus Christ and our Catholic faith! This fall, over 600 children and young people, preschool through grade 12, will sign up to learn more about Jesus and the Catholic faith. You can help by becoming a catechist for Faith Formation. As you nurture the faith of our young, you will learn and grow as well! As one long-time catechist put it, I learn so much from the children! We provide you with training, materials and support; some classes only require a second adult aide, which actually means no teaching. Classes begin on Sunday, August 26. If you re interested in serving in our children s ministry or just want more information, contact Deborah! On Sunday, August 5 at all the weekend Masses, there will be a special blessing of school backpacks! Children are invited to bring their school backpacks to Mass and Father will bless the children and the backpacks and give them an awesome send-off before the new school year begins! For those of you without backpacks, we will have a few on-hand to distribute. Please contact Tammie in our Outreach Ministry for backpack and school supply assistance. Additionally, all school educators will be given a special blessing as they, too, begin a new school year. Also, please join us in the dining room after the 9 a.m., 11 a.m. & 1 p.m. Masses for an ice cream social and meet some of your fellow classmates and parishioners. And, if you haven t already signed up for Faith Formation classes, we ll be on-site registering for the upcoming year after all the MORNING Masses. What a great way to start off the new school year! We also have a few extra VBS T-shirts available for $5/ each if anyone is interested in purchasing an extra T-shirt to do some fine-dinin in! Just see the front desk! We ll be joining forces with Community Life for a Friday Night BANANZA! A Parents Night Out, aka Date Night, on Friday, July 20 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. There ll be minions, pizza, crafts and banana splits for children ages Cost is $10/child; pick up a registration form at the Community Center front desk!
