We recognize our responsibility to give worship to God, reverence to all people, respect to all creation and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Acknowledging our own brokenness and our need to hope, we seek to be a forgiving and welcoming community committed to service by the sharing of life and love with all, and working together to make peace and justice a reality in our world. Strengthened by the presence of God in our lives, we undertake all of this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen. Alleluia!
2 Holy Spirit Catholic Church April 29, 2018 From The Pastor s Desk Throughout the Gospel of John, we are given many other images where Jesus says I am. We have the images of the bread of life and the living water wonderful images that talk about the necessity of being fed and nourished by Jesus. But the image of the vine and the branches goes even further. Here we have our Lord telling us that our life flows directly from his life. We are so connected, so united that we do not really exist without him. Jesus warns us not to cut ourselves off from our life source. If we do not bear any fruit, we will be cut off. Not bearing fruit could be refusing to go out of ourselves, pretending that we are self-sufficient, closing our hearts to those in need of our attention, our concern, our money. We can dry up, we can be efficient at work or at home, but inside we are little better than dead. Our motivation to work may come solely from a desire for more money we take care of the material needs of our family so that we won t look bad in the eyes of our neighbors or relatives we are not moved to act out of love only out of saving face, keeping our reputation. When Jesus invites us to abide in him, as he does so many times in this Scripture passage, what do we imagine abide to mean? The ideal home, comfort, security, a place where we can be ourselves, relax, let our hair down, someplace where the tensions of life are put behind us, a place of refuge, a place which refreshes us give us strength to face another day. This is the home into which Jesus is inviting us. When we abide in Christ, then we will have the chance of becoming authentic persons. Instead of our own selfinterest being the source of our behavior, it will be our oneness with Christ. This may sound rather vague to you but let s look at the image of the branch that lives in the vine. It draws its vitality and strength from the vine and it knows that it can withstand all kinds of harsh weather because it can rely on the strength of the vine. It does not stand alone. In our own lives, when the harsh weather of disappointment, pain, or separation comes, if we are firmly united to Jesus, we will not have to go through these experiences alone. The lives of the saints prove this over and over again. They were not free from pain. But they were firm in their love of Christ and were able to endure things that we can only wonder about. Imagine a man and woman who have grown fond of each other, but there seem to be some lack of love on the part of the man. One evening the woman says, Will you try to love me as much as I love you? The man is forced to respond. Is this going to be part time love on his part, something to keep him amused? Will she be someone he runs to when life gets hard? Or will they live for each other? Will they be willing to die for each other? In some ways, this is the love that is being asked of us by Christ. Are we willing to grow towards that love? The best things in life may not be free: love costs. So does faith and the experience of God. On Sunday, April 29, Children s Faith Formation will join hundreds of other churches across the nation to pray for the victims of child abuse and for those who rescue them. This day is better known as Blue Sunday. The National Blue Sunday Day of Prayer began in 1994 with only 20 participating churches but has now grown to include 7.4 million participants on five continents. In recognition of Blue Sunday, we are encouraging all catechists and children to wear blue on April 29. Each child will be sent home with a flyer containing the Blue Sunday Prayer and information on how to recognize the signs of child abuse. We will also have a few blue pinwheels available at the Community Center that will be available for a small donation to the Dallas Advocacy Center. Early Registration for the 2018/19 Faith Formation year is now officially underway! We will have one last Sunday of on-site registration before we break for the year, which is this Sunday, April 29 after all the MORNING Masses in the gym. After this 29th, you can stop by during the work week, Monday-Thursday (NO FRIDAYS) between 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact Deborah, Devyn, Lindee or Lisa. Also, to help eliminate last minute issues with sacrament celebrations, baptism certificate copies are required BEFORE registering for sacramental preparation classes. NOTE: We will not be accepting nor distributing registrations on the last day of Faith Formation, Sunday, May 6.
