2 Holy Spirit Catholic Church October 22, 2017 From The Pastor s Desk Have you ever known someone who likes to set people up in conversation by asking unanswerable questions? Sometimes they come out with merely embarrassing questions such as How much money did you make last year?, or You must be making a bundle to be able to afford that car! Other times they ask a question to which there is no right answer such as, Are you still cheating on your taxes? People who ask these questions probably feel insecure and so they try to get one up on you in order to make themselves seems witty and superior. Well today the Pharisees are trying to back Jesus into the corner with one of those unanswerable questions. They are hoping to embarrass him in front of his followers and cause him to lose authority with the people. Now, Jesus was very well-known storyteller and had already angered the Pharisees by making them the object of some of his stories. When the Pharisees realized that they weren t coming off very well in the parables, Matthew says they actually went off and plotted to trap Jesus in his words the next time. They very cleverly decided to ask Jesus about taxes as controversial a topic as it is now. Jesus answer seems to say, It s no threat to God s greatness to have the emperor holding some degree of authority in the world; and it s right and proper to pay legitimate taxes. But don t forget there are some much more important areas of our lives over which God does hold supreme authority. In other words, it isn t taxes that we owe to God it s our hearts, our bodies, and our lives. We seem to fall into the same trap that the Pharisees tried to set for Jesus forgetting that God ultimately holds everything in God s own heart. We don t really own anything we have, even our own life. For example, if you re a parent, have you fallen into the trap of thinking your children actually belong to you? Children are like a precious gift given to the community by God, to be nurtured and held in a sacred trust but they are not ever a parent s possession. To give back to God what is God s means to keep this reality in mind as you re making decisions for the children you are raising. Or perhaps you have considered having an abortion or know someone who has, because they believe It s MY body and it s MY decision to end a life inside my body. Or maybe you are a teenager who uses drugs or drinks too much and you believe that It s my body and I can treat it anyway I want. Or there s Dr. Kevorkian, the doctor of death, who believes that we have a right to a certain quality of life, and if we don t have enough quality, we should be in control of ending our lives. Jesus s response to all of these situations is to call us back to reality: Give back to God that which is God s. In the case of anything that affects our bodies and minds, remember that these not only belong to God, they are the sacred places where the Spirit of God comes to us and lives in us in very deep ways. You can help yourself remember this reality. The next time one of these issues comes up in your life, maybe part of your prayer every day could be to ask: Who is it who is keeping me alive? Who is calling me by name, to respond with my life? Whose am I? 3 Holy Spirit Catholic Church October 22, 2017 Youth Ministry Permission Slips are online for the Dallas Catholic Youth Conference and for the Youth Stand for Life trip to DC! Deadlines for deposits are coming up so check out for the forms and more information. We will have our annual volunteer day at the cemetery this month. Join us on October 29th from 1:30-3 p.m. at Little Bethel cemetery. We will make the place look nice for families coming to visit for All Souls Day and el Día de los Muertos. Community Life Ministry Sunday Morning Food and Fellowship Today: Burger Brunch by ACTS Yummy fresh burgers, chips & drinks starting at 10:30am. Find them in the courtyard or in between the two buildings. Eat them here or take them to go. The gym will be available with tables and chairs for eating and fellowship. Liturgy We still need volunteers for the Halloween Spooktacular! 4 Holy Spirit Catholic Church October 22, 2017 As part of our ongoing efforts to provide not only educational but lived faith experiences, Children s Faith Formation would like to invite everyone to a Special All Saints/All Souls Day Celebration on Sunday, October 29 in the Community Center lobby. So that we can continue to honor those who have left this world but live on in our hearts, we invite you to bring a framed photo of your special loved one to be placed on a Memory Table. We ask that all photos be turned in to the Faith Formation Office no later than Wednesday, October 25 so that the table can be decorated and ready for all to see on the 29th. Be sure to put your name and phone # on the back of your photo so we know who to contact if you forget to retrieve your photo. Additionally, Catholic Updates will be available with information on both All Saints and All Souls Days, a basket for name submissions to be included in the novena for the deceased and the mass schedule for The Solemnity of All Saints (November 1), which is a Holy Day of Obligation. Grab your mummy and make plans to join us for a fa BOO lous time on Tuesday, October 31 from 6-8 p.m. in the Community Center gym for our annual HALLOWEEN SPOOKTACULAR! There ll be lots of games, snacks, treats and maybe even a few tricks. Canned good donations, for Holy Spirit s food pantry, may be dropped off at the Spooktacular entrance with one of our spirited volunteers. Be sure to bring a treat bag for all your loot and wear your cutest costume (let s keep it from being too creepy) and enjoy an evening of ghostly fun! We are also graciously accepting donations of bagged Halloween candy, treats and prizes (we ll need a lot as this is one of our largest community events!). Please drop your donations off at the Community Center front desk, attention Deborah. Also, if you would like to volunteer to help out (Confirmation families, here s a great service project!), contact Deborah or Devyn. We will need help with set-up on Tuesday, October 31! 4th Grade Mornings with Mom & Dad are this Sunday, October 22 in the dining room at your child s regularly scheduled Faith Formation class time and does include a Theology of the Body presentation. Mom & Dad, plan on joining your child for some one-on-one time and experience what they are learning in their CFF class. To ensure minimal disruption for the other families in attendance, please take advantage of our nursery for younger siblings. Please note that Mornings with Mom & Dad ARE NOT associated with our sacramental preparation program. 2nd Grade Mornings with Mom & Dad sessions are NEXT Sunday, October 29 in the dining room. 5 With the holidays fast-approaching, it is important we remember those who may not be as fortunate. In past years, Holy Spirit parishioners have done a wonderful job remembering others in need! Let s do it again! Listed on the back are the holiday food items that we will be collecting for Thanksgiving in order to help others enjoy a holiday meal. Non-perishable donations: Please drop off items in the Outreach Box in the Narthex or at the Community Center. Frozen turkey donations: Please drop off at the Community Center Monday-Thursday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 Noon.
