We recognize our responsibility to give worship to God, reverence to all people, respect to all creation and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Acknowledging our own brokenness and our need to hope, we seek to be a forgiving and welcoming community committed to service by the sharing of life and love with all, and working together to make peace and justice a reality in our world. Strengthened by the presence of God in our lives, we undertake all of this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen. Alleluia!

2 Holy Spirit Catholic Church November 5, 2017 From The Pastor s Desk In Psalm 131 we are given a beautiful image of the tender and protective relationship we are meant to have with God. We are like a child resting in the bosom of its mother. Protected, cherished, loved, cared for, nourished. This child is perfectly humble because the child accepts that he or she is just that a child. And so it can rest in its mother s bosom. As we grow older, something happens to many of us. No longer content to be children of God, we long to be admired and praised by others. At the slightest opening, we willingly tell others about our accomplishments or our education, where we have traveled, or where we hope to go. We may even exaggerate our tale a bit so that it sounds more exotic than it is. We are looking for affirmation and praise from others, hungry for others to give us a sign that we are worth having around. The strange thing is that we have been given the greatest affirmation we could wish for the affirmation of a God who knows no bounds in the caring that he lavishes on us. Jesus criticizes the religious leaders by saying, They do all their deeds to be seen by others. Their main motivation was not love, but self-promotion. Good deeds were only used to get the positive attention of others. That s a terrible form of slavery. It makes us dependent upon the reactions of others. There s little else in life that could be more restricting than to always have to consider other people s reactions to what we do. You might as well be in jail because, in reality, if that is how you live your life, you really are in jail. The one who is humble knows that his or her value comes from inside of themselves, for it is there that they discover their relationship to the God of love; out of this loving relationship they sense their great value. Our glory is not in what we do, but in the fact that we live in God and are loved by God. That may seem a bit abstract to you, but it is really the most concrete fact there is. What we do comes from who we are. So often, we get things backwards. We seem to think that it is what we do that makes us somebody. That s why we have a tendency to first tell new people whom we meet all about our accomplishments. We think that this is the way they will get to know us. But it s not true. Our friends get to really know us when we allow them to see us outside of our jobs or our functions as parents or employers or members of a certain group. When someone is doing something for us, such as carrying out some task or even caring for us in a personal way, it s true that we can know something of that person. But when we have the chance to be with that person in a situation where neither of us has any major task to perform, it s then we have the opportunity to get to know them in a deeper way. Humility involves the full knowledge of our status as creatures, a clear consciousness of having received everything we have from God. What do you have that was not given to you? And if it was given, how can you boast as though it were not? [1 Cor. 4:7] But this acceptance of our complete dependence upon God does not throw us into the valley of despair. We don t focus on our nothingness; rather we focus on the God who is everything all loving, all good, all caring. This looking at God who is not an impersonal being, but a loving Father, enables us to surrender as a little child surrenders to the arms of his mother. In our surrender we become whom we are meant to be children of God.
