2 Holy Spirit Catholic Church December 9, 2018 From The Pastor s Desk How do we prepare our hearts to receive Christ during this season of Advent as we are waiting to celebrate Christmas? A little housekeeping of the heart would not be a bad thing to do. We won t be able to welcome Christ if our hearts are full of thoughts of revenge and unforgiveness. Are you carrying any such things around with you allowing them to occupy some valuable space in your hearts? Has your trust in God slowly been slipping away so that now you think that trust is only for children, or for simple minded adults who don t know any better? Have you become cynical about God s care for you, thinking all of that resembles some fairy tale rather than the truth of the Gospel? Have you been burnt by trying to really love your neighbor as Christ asks us to do, only to have it backfire in your face? And now you wonder if you will ever reach out to another person again. Or there could be a hundred and one other things that have tried to take over your heart. Empty your hearts of all that is cluttering it. Create a space within yourselves that will be welcoming to Christ. Since Advent is a season of hope then perhaps this would be a good time to ask God to help us put aside any of the obstacles in our lives that prevent us from fully welcoming Christ. Our Psalm today gives us a picture of ourselves. The Psalmist says: Although they go forth weeping, carrying the seed to be sown, they shall come back rejoicing, carrying their sheaves. We need to have a vision of what could be. We know that when we are looking forward to something, it can help to change the present situation that we live in. Hope can dramatically affect the life that we are now living. The difference between people who live in hope and those who do not live in hope is quite dramatic. Victor Frankl was in a concentration camp and while bigger and stronger men than he died, he lived because he had something to live for. He dreamt of seeing his wife and children again, and of writing a manuscript about a theory that he had been developing. His hope literally kept him alive. When we are around hopeful people then life is different. Isolation is a trap that we have to avoid. If we cut ourselves off from people that see differently, we may become very narrow minded and lose the ability to imagine that things could be different. The extent of our vision can be seriously reduced. They use blinders on a horse so that it won t be able to see a wider view, and be distracted; if we have blinders on, then we aren t able to see the wider view but instead of preventing us from being distracted, it prevents us from being attracted attracted to a wider vision. John the Baptist had this wider vision he saw beyond the narrow confines of the small lives that people called living, and called them to a bigger life a life of justice and righteousness. And he was so strong in his call and his convictions that he died for them. Isolation can keep us locked in our own small world. Isolation doesn t just mean not being with others who share a similar dream. We can become isolated by refusing to read or listen to others. A closed mind is one that has gone into hibernation. Advent is about expectation. It s a season when we are encouraged to dream and hope to imagine what could be. The Holy Spirit Youth Group would love to come sing to you! We will be traveling around Duncanville and Cedar Hill on Friday, December 21st. Donations are not required but any money donated will be used for scholarships for the March for Life and Dallas Catholic Youth Conference! We are having our annual poinsettia sale again! Poinsettias will be on sale December 15th-16th. They are $12 and all proceeds go towards our Youth Stand for Life trip! 4 Holy Spirit Catholic Church December 9, 2018 An Afternoon Out For Parents! Join us THIS Sunday for our annual Children s Christmas event, Breakfast with St. Nicholas! Enjoy a delicious breakfast, courtesy of the Knights of Columbus, musical performance by the Children s Christmas choir and there might even be a visit from St. Nicholas himself! Admission to breakfast - PER PERSON - is a new child s toy, which will be donated to Brighter Tomorrows, one of Dallas County s largest women s shelters. But, if you forget your toy, a monetary donation will be taken in lieu of. This event is open to the entire parish.not just Faith Formation. So grab your grandchildren, nieces and nephews and join us for a wonderful Christmas event! PreK 4 Mornings with Mom & Dad sessions are this Sunday, December 9 at your child s regular Faith Formation time in the dining room! Mom & Dad, plan on joining your child for some one-on-one time and experience what they are learning in their Faith Formation class. PreK 3 sessions are next Sunday, December 16. We are still in need of an Office Aide at our 11:00 a.m. Faith Formation class session! No experience is necessary; just a love of children and a willingness to commit to being here on Sunday mornings. Plus, we have fun in Children s Faith Formation!! Contact Deborah for more information. A huge thank you to the Legion of Mary for coming to our aide, last minute, this past Sunday by donating rosaries for our lesson on Mary, Mother of God! Due to nearly half of our purchased rosaries being damaged, we were short our goal of distributing them to all Faith Formation children. But because of their generosity, Grades K-6 were able to take one home. Thank you, ladies, so very much! Your kindness is very appreciated! There are no Faith Formation classes on Sunday, December 23 or December 30. We ll return on Sunday, January 6, 2019! This is the last weekend to register for our Santa s Christmas Workshop! Children s Faith Formation and Holy Spirit s Nursery Staff are offering four hours of fun and excitement for children, ages 1 to 12 (6th Grade), at Santa s Christmas Workshop...An Afternoon Out for Parents! Our workshop will include crafts, snacks, games & more crafts! This is a great way to get some of that last minute Christmas shopping done (or start it if you haven t already) or maybe enjoy lunch and a movie or just take a long nap on the couch! But, we have you covered with a safe, inexpensive location to watch your kiddos. Saturday, December 15, p.m. $10.00 per child up to a maximum of $30.00 for three or more Preregistration is required; walk-ins/late registrations will not be accepted to ensure adequate staffing needs according to diocesan safe environment requirements. Nursery reservations (ages 1-4) are limited and accepted on a first-come, first serve basis. Pick up a registration form at the Community Center front desk. Registration deadline is Monday, December 10. We must have at least 20 families signed up to make this event a go! And, if you would like to volunteer to help, we ll need lots of adults (must be SEP cleared) and older youth to assist. Confirmation families, here s a great service project. Outreach Ministry ANGEL WISHES TOY DRIVE November 18 December 9 This is the FINAL DAY we are collecting toys to support two of our local shelters, Brighter Tomorrows and Bridges Safehouse. Both shelters provide shelter and services for women and their children fleeing domestic violence. These families really need our support. THANK YOU, for making these little angels wishes come true this Christmas. Your donations will make a child smile on Christmas morning! Toys can be dropped off before or after Masses in the Narthex. Deadline for toy drop off is: TODAY, DECEMBER 9TH We are raising money for Bryan s House, a privately funded organization that ministers to infants and children with special needs including HIV. Bryan s House serves over 1,200 people a year. They offer medically-managed childcare, family support services, weekend/summer childcare and other special programs. What can you do to help? Join us. Make a donation, any amount is appreciated. Every child has the right to thrive. Every parent that has a child with special needs deserves excellent care.
