3 A prayer for our nation written by George Washington, our first President: Almighty god, who has given us this good land for our heritage: We humbly beseech you that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of your favor and glad to do your will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom your Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to your law, we may show forth your praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness and in the day of trouble, do not allow our trust in you to fall; all this we ask through Jesus Christ our lord. AMEN!

4 Look To Jesus What s Pastor Thinking Today we meet Jairus an important official. But Jairus was also a dad. A dad of a little girl who adored him, who crawled on his lap, a little girl who sang songs to him, wanted nothing more than to play with him. Now she's grown to be fully 12 years old. And now, on the verge of womanhood, she's dying. What dad, what parent for that matter, what person who has ever lost a love, for that matter, who in this world can read the story without sympathizing with him? Today we also meet a nameless woman, who was religiously unclean, as outcast as a leper. For twelve years she had been going to one quack after another who was happy enough to take her money and leave her broke, and always, always, bleeding. Every day this poor woman faced the harsh reality of her hopelessness. Who can read the story without empathizing with this woman? Both Jairus and this woman have something more in common they have faith. Jairus came to Jesus in faith: My daughter is at the point of death. Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live. The nameless woman had faith, too; what did Jesus say to her? Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction. Whatever kind of faith it was that Jairus and that woman had, we want it too for ourselves and for our family. We want it for everyone in our Church who has a sick child or grandchild; for everyone whose body is starting to give out or started giving out longer ago than they care to remember. God gave them the gifts of assurance and conviction: assurance that Jesus could help them, conviction that He would. Somehow in faith they were able to see more than what flashed before their eyes. Jairus saw his daughter well again. The woman saw herself well again. Faith is what happens when God opens your eyes and you begin to see as God sees. So, when you look at someone whose body or spirit is broken, look where Jairus and the nameless woman looked: Look to Jesus, the pioneer and perfector of faith.

6 We are a Catholic Parish in Bellmore, New York, Since 1912 Fr. Michael Ngoka, CM Bishop Barres has appointed Fr. Michael Ngoka, CM as associate pastor at St. Barnabas. He will arrive on August 31st. He is presently pastor of a parish in Abuja, Nigeria. In the meantime, we are very grateful to Fr. Francis for returning from Ghana to help again this Summer. He will reside here until August 2nd. Two other priests from Nigeria will also assist us this Summer. Fr. Nicholas Nnabuaku will be here in July and Fr. Patrick Abem in August. We are truly grateful for the help of all our visiting priests and we thank you for making our seminarian and visiting priests feel welcome at St. Barnabas. Peter s Pence This weekend, we will take the Peter s Pence Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Please be generous. For more information, visit Holy Family Chapel Schedule Change The 10:15 AM Mass celebrated in the Holy Family Chapel will not take place from Sunday, July 1st through Sunday, September 9th. Mass will resume in the Holy Family Chapel on Sunday, September 16th. Please remember this when planning your Mass attendance. Banns of Marriage: Vincent Moreno & Elizabeth O Brien Social Ministry Summer Hours The summer hours for Social Ministry are as follows: Monday and Thursday - 1:30 PM - 5:30 PM Tuesday and Wednesday - 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM Friday - 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM Food Pantry Weekend This weekend is our Food Pantry Weekend. With schools closing for summer vacation and children at home, there is a greater need to keep our Food Pantry stocked. From now until Labor Day, we typically receive less donations with many on vacation. Unfortunately, hunger exists all year for many in our own community. To prevent a summer shortage, please help by donating some of these needed items: oatmeal, cookies, crackers, coffee, jell-o/pudding, condiments, canned fruit, sugar/sugar substitute, salad dressings, baby diapers - size 5, bar soap, shampoo/conditioner, toothpaste, paper towels, napkins, tissues, laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid, cleaning products. Last month we helped feed 49 families. Many thanks for all you do for our needy neighbors.

New Stop Signs Please be advised - New stop signs were installed on the North and South sides of the intersection of Bedford Avenue and Marle Place. The parish and school extend their appreciation and thankfulness to our local representatives for their assistance in this matter. The new signage is intended to ensure the safety of our parishioners and children crossing over this busy roadway. Charismatic Prayer Group Our meetings are held every Monday evening in the Holy Family Chapel from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Coffee and cake are served after every meeting. Couples are given the opportunity to explore many aspects of their relationship through a series of presentations, writings and dialog. There are no group discussions. Please call , ext or admissions@stdoms.org. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul In today s Gospel, we see how in faith, Jarius asked Jesus to heal his daughter and how Jesus answered his prayer. In prayer, we also come to know that we are loved by God, and in that we ask for healing for ourselves, our loved ones and all those who are suffering. Just as Jarius overcame his fears in order to encounter Jesus and receive life, so we must surrender our own wills in order to encounter Jesus and receive life. Living the paschal mystery is none other than our daily dying to self - overcoming our fears and reaching out to Jesus in humility - in all the little, practical ways that fill our daily routines. As children of God, we must constantly be convincing ourselves in prayer of the excessive love with which God has reached out and is still reaching out to us each day and each moment of the day. If we are not convinced that God loves us as we are, even with our frailties, it will be very difficult for us to show the love of God to others. Please pray for the poor and needy in the parish so that they experience the love and care of God. Catholics for Freedom of Religion The American Founders gathered in Philadelphia in 1776 to draft the Declaration of Independence, which dissolved the political ties that had bound the American people to Great Britain. A new nation was born, free and independent. The 56 signers required remarkable change since they knew they were committing treason against the British Crowne and that, if caught, they risked

Ultimately, 5 were captured and brutally tortured as traitors, 9 others died from wounds, some lost sons to battle or capture, and many had their homes and property pillaged and burned, while still others lost their fortunes in helping to fund the Continental Army. As a parent, I can sympathize with Jairus. What parents would not do all they could for their child? I can imagine Jairus desperation, for his daughter was at the point of death. But his faith in Jesus gave him hope! Although Jairus receives word that his daughter had died, Jesus tells him, Do not be afraid, just have faith. We all have or will experience the loss of a loved one. Does that mean that our faith was not strong enough to save them? Or perhaps God saw that it was just time for them to receive their heavenly reward! Although earth IS beautiful, we can only imagine how much greater our joy will be in Heaven! We need to take Jesus word into our hearts. Be not afraid, just have faith. All men are invited to join the Men of the Way of Light as we discuss growing our faith at our next meeting on Saturday, July 7th, immediately following the 8:00 AM Mass. This meeting offers parents an opportunity to review the baptism ceremony and set the date. The meeting is more conversational than instructional. Forms need to be completed giving information on the parents, child s date and place of birth, as well as the names and religious affiliation of the sponsors. At least one sponsor must be a practicing Catholic. Baptisms are held on Saturday at 11:30 AM, and Sunday at 1:30 PM, when the Church is available. If you wish to hold a private baptism you must bring a visiting priest to perform the baptism service. Private baptisms may be held on Saturday at 1:30 PM and 3:00 PM and on Sunday at 3:00 PM, if these times are available. First time parents are required to attend a Baptism Class. Classes are held in the Holy Family Chapel on Agape Sunday, the second Sunday of the month. Crying babies and noisy children are welcome. We begin with Mass at 10:15 AM, when your baby will be welcomed to St. Barnabas, followed by refreshments and the class. The dates for class are after 10:30 Mass for July 8, August 12 and September 9. They return to 10:15 Mass for October 14, November 11, December 9.
