3 New Pastoral Letter Commemorates Fiftieth Anniversary of Humane Vitae Fifty years ago, on July 25, 1968, Pope Paul VI issued an Encyclical Letter entitled Humanae Vitae, On Human Life. On October 14, 2018, Pope Francis will canonize his predecessor as Pope Saint Paul VI. In this anniversary year, Bishop John O. Barres of the Diocese of Rockville Centre has issued a Pastoral Letter entitled The Supreme Gift: The Gift of Life, commemorating the encyclical of this soon-to-be-canonized saint. This teaching of the late Holy Father is in many ways more important today than at any time before. Visit drvc.org for an electronic copy in English and Spanish. Thank you. In his letter, Bishop Barres wants to teach the people of the diocese the important truths of Humanae Vitae, because these truths very much need to be reexamined today in light of the problems we face in our time. Please take a copy of The Supreme Gift home, read it, and discuss it as married couples and as families. Bishop Barres says: Understanding the teaching of Humanae Vitae, believing it, and living it, is one of the first and most important answers to the crisis of our time. I truly believe that the future Pope Saint Paul VI wrote the letter more for our times than even for his own. Today, it can become the first step in repairing the injury between men and women, husbands and wives, parents and children, the family and society. At the Mass of Beatification of Pope Paul VI in 2014, Pope Francis said of his predecessor: When we look to this great Pope, this courageous Christian, this tireless apostle, we cannot but say in the sight of God a word as simple as it is heartfelt and important: thanks! Thank you, our dear and beloved Pope Paul VI! Thank you for your humble and prophetic witness of love for Christ and his Church! In [his] humility the grandeur of Blessed Paul VI shines forth: before the advent of a secularized and hostile society, he could hold fast, with farsightedness and wisdom and at times
4 Come away Rest a while What s Pastor Thinking The other day I came across a radio station on Sirius celebrating Christmas in July. Sure enough there was Bing Crosby dreaming of a white Christmas followed by the story of Scrooge. Makes one feel nostalgic but frantic too as Christmas is both a very joyful and busy time. Praise God for Summer! Summer is a time to leave our busy winter schedules, a time when the momentum of our life is interrupted. Summer presents free time to us - time for a rarest of activities - time to rest. Praise the God of Summer. In summer's rest we meet the God of the 23rd Psalm, today s psalm. In verdant pastures he gives me repose; beside restful waters he leads me; he refreshes my soul. In Summer we hear the invitation of Jesus from today s gospel to come aside and rest a while. Praise God for the Summer s rest that brings rest to our souls. Summer also reveals the playfulness of God who creates such an awesome variety of plants, and flowers, and hills, valleys and sandy beaches. Summer is a time that brings a smile to the face of almost everyone. It is a time of year when children are freed from the responsibilities of school work, families and friends gather together and share a moment of love and friendship, and a time when fireflies light up the soft, warm summer evening skies. As summer continues, we should all take a few moments to reflect upon the meaning of this special God-given season and thank Him for it. Much is expected of Christmas, but Summer often acts like a Sabbath for the year. Summer is a wonderful time of year, and I pray that God will continue to bless each and every one of us with a summer of fun and joy. May we emerge from this season more rested to do God s work, more committed to serve God s people, and more in love with our God who created and loves us. ALL PRAISE TO THE GOD OF SUMMER!

6 We are a Catholic Parish in Bellmore, New York, Since 1912 Tree Removal Many parishioners have noticed the deterioration of the two trees beside the steps at the front entrance to St. Barnabas on Bedford Avenue. Unfortunately we have to replace them. This was a difficult decision as the removal of any tree is regrettable, but necessary. New planting will follow as soon as possible. Fr. Adrian. Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary falls on Wednesday, August 15th. The Vigil Mass will be held at St. Barnabas on Tuesday, August 14th at 7:00 PM. Masses on Wednesday are at 6:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 4:30 PM and 7:00 PM. Banns of Marriage: Michael Mongelli & Jennifer Okolski August our new associate, Fr. Michael Ngoka, CM will arrive. He is presently pastor of a parish in Abuja, Nigeria. Please help by donating a gift card to Staples, CVS, Target, Walmart, or Rite-Aid. As always, we thank you for your generosity. Donations can be left at the Rectory Office. 8 We are a Catholic Parish in Bellmore, New York, Since 1912 The Men of the Way of Light In today s Gospel, we find Jesus and the Apostles exhausted from all they were doing. The constant crowds coming and going left them little time to rest or eat. He gathered the Apostles and traveled to a lonely place in search of some peace and rest. Word got out where He was going, and a huge throng was waiting for them when they arrived. When He saw the crowd, He did not get angry. Instead, He was filled with compassion for they were like sheep without a shepherd. How many times have we encountered a lost sheep? Did we try to avoid them because we were tired? Did we send them away? We come across people in need every day. If we truly wish to emulate Jesus, we have to share in His compassion. St. Josemaria Escriva said, To be holy isn t easy, but it isn t difficult either. To be holy is to be a good Christian, to resemble Christ. The more closely a person resembles Christ, the more Christian he is, the more he belongs to Christ, the holier he is. All men are invited to join the Men of the Way of Light as we explore holiness and reflect on Sunday s scripture readings. Our next meeting is on Saturday, July 28th, immediately following the 8:00 AM Mass. We will meet in the Nazareth Room of the Holy Family Chapel (lower church). Bagels and coffee served. The meeting runs until 10:30 AM. For more information, visit our FaceBook page or pick up one of our business cards displayed at the rear of the church. Knights of Columbus Bicycle Ride The Bellmore Knights of Columbus will once again coordinate the bicycle ride for St. Jude s Children s Research Hospital. The hospital provides care for children with cancer and shares the research for treatment worldwide. Families are not required to pay for treatment or accommodations. Last year s event raised over $14,000 for St. Jude s, making us one of the leading fundraisers of the charity on Long Island. Please consider riding one of our routes (25, 50, or 100 miles) or any other concept for the event. All participants need to raise $250 for the charity and join us for the after-event BBQ. Please join us for this popular, enjoyable ride on Saturday, September 29th. For details, contact Ken Yager at Also, watch the bulletin for further details and see our webpage on the St. Jude site for donations and registering as a participant.

This trip is being run by a travel agency, so it will fill quickly. Society of St. Vincent de Paul In this Sunday s Gospel, Jesus tells His disciples to Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest awhile. Whatever the cause of being worn out, Jesus is there to listen, support, and invite us to rest a bit. If we let Jesus gather us in, He will take care of us. Living faithful to the mission Jesus has given us requires that we balance action and contemplation. Let us all give ourselves completely to the practice of prayer, since it is by prayer that all good things come to us. Please say a special prayer for the poor and forgotten in the parish, and continue to support St. Vincent de Paul. Thank you. Catholics for Freedom of Religion Philadelphia vs Catholic Social Services: The Archdiocese of Philadelphia and 3 foster parents are suing the City of Philadelphia in a religious case centered on the placement of children in foster care. Despite issuing a recent plea for more candidates for foster care, the City has abruptly ended contracts with Catholic Social Services (CSS) and Bethany Christian Services because it disagrees with their teaching on marriage and family. These Christian agencies do not interview same-sex couples as candidates for foster care. Instead, they refer these couples to other agencies that do place children in same-sex homes. CSS is, at its core, an institution founded on faith-based principles, said spokesman Ken Gavin. As such, CSS would not be able to consider foster care placement within the context of a same-sex union. It is imperative that the entire Catholic community in the United States
