4 GO BE MY DISCIPLES What s Pastor Thinking Discipleship is the mission. We are disciples. Every one of us should be a disciple. In the reading from Mark we see Christ sending them out, two by two. The Church is not a social club, we are not a political party. Christ wants us to share in His ministry of compassion and healing. If we take Christ s command to heart, we cannot just go through the motions of our faith, and not move ahead to touch other lives. We must live our religion. We must make our faith a religion of action, not just a faith of personal reflection. We must be agitators for compassion and healing. The mission of the twelve disciples, and the mission of the Church, consists in preaching the need for repentance. This type of preaching necessarily implies confrontation with evil. We will bear a cross if we confront evil, but have no fear. Christ prepares us to bear this cross. He tells how to arm ourselves. He wants his true disciples to travel light. He doesn t want us burdened with material things. In our discipleship, Christ does not want us attached to comfort and luxuries. He wants us to travel light so that we re possessed of only one care. That care is to teach. You say you can t teach? You say you re not a good speaker. You say you don t know your faith well enough to teach. You say you can t heal. What stops us from carry out our mission? What holds us back? What stops us from preaching repentance and healing the sick? Perhaps a hard heart, envy, anger, jealousy, greed, and addiction to luxury and comforts. Our mission is to be teachers to the whole world. To this purpose God would release us from our worldly cares, from our envy, our jealousy, and our hard hearts. He would make us free from gluttony and self-indulgence. As disciples he wants us possessed of only one care: to teach, to expel demons, and to heal our neighbors. We are all to be disciples. This is our mission. Let us press forward amid the persecutions of the world and the consolations of God.

7 Our Mission is to Encourage Evangelize & Educate Respect Life Rosary All are invited to join the Respect Life Group at the outdoor Mary statue to pray the rosary after the 8:00 AM Mass on Saturday, July 21st. Please bring a lawn chair. Take Action: Let your State Senator know you are against abortion expansion and codifying Roe v Wade. On the same day that President Donald Trump announced his nominee for the Supreme Court (Judge Brett Kavanaugh), New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announced new actions to push through his Abortion Expansion Act and codify abortion laws in the state. According to a post on the New York State Catholic Conference's Facebook page, this will be an election issue, as Cuomo seeks to unseat pro-life state Senators who have prevented him from taking steps to expand abortion in New York. The Governor has called on the Senate to reconvene and vote on codifying Roe. v. Wade into State law. The Assembly has passed legislation to codify Roe v. Wade for the last six years, including during the 2018 Legislative Session, but it has been rejected by the Senate. To support his efforts, the Governor has released a video ad calling on New Yorkers to urge their senators to "vote for Roe or we'll vote you out." It is important for those who oppose the Governor's agenda to also contact their senators and urge them to stand firm and not vote to codify Roe v. Wade and expand abortion in New York. Voters can visit the New York State Catholic Conference's Catholic Action Network or the New York State Senate's Find Your Senator page to send messages directly to their representative. Worldwide Marriage Encounter Jesus is asking us to go out two by two and proclaim His good news. Strengthen your relationship, rekindle your romance and renew your sacrament by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. The next Weekends are November 16th - 18th and February 8th - 10th, 2019 in Huntington, NY. For more information, call John & Toni Torio at or visit them at

For information, please contact Lenny and Pat Walker at (631) or St. Barnabas Pre - Cana Schedule Opening: Sunday 9/16 Foccus: Monday 9/17 thru Friday 9/21 Review: Monday 9/24 thru Friday 9/28 In Home: 9/30 thru 11/16 Closing: Sunday 11/18 Single Catholics of Long Island A social organization for single persons, including Divorced or Separated, Widows and Widowers. New member orientation on Wednesday, July 25th at 7:30 PM at St. Frances de Chantal School, 1309 Wantagh Ave., Wantagh. This is a nondenominational organization, all are welcome. Bring proof of single status to join. Refreshments following the meeting. For further information, call Carol at or Barbara at The Society of St. Vincent de Paul In the Gospel, Jesus sends the apostles out on a mission - two by two. His instructions indicate that they are to stay focused on what they are to do. Everything they would do originates in Jesus and the power to stay focused on the mission and be successful comes only from Jesus who sent them. When disciples are sent on a mission it is to take up the mission of Jesus, and there is only one mission - to establish God s reign. It is difficult in our glamorous age to hear the call of God. It is even more difficult to respond with trust that God will provide all that is necessary. Most difficult perhaps is to resist the temptation to desire the acceptance of men more than the acceptance of God. With our own power and talent we can do little; with authority with which Jesus invests His disciples we can do much. From the beginning of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, members visit in pairs two by two, those who are poor and needy in their homes. It is there, in the family setting that Vincentians listen, offer humble advice, and render assistance. If you know of anyone living in the parish that is in need of help, please call St. Vincent de Paul is waiting to help. The Men of the Way of Light In today s second reading, Paul summarizes salvation history in 11 versus! This panoramic view spans the past (...He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world 1:4), the present (...He destined us in love to be His sons 1:5); and the future ( a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in Christ, things in Heaven and things on earth. 1:10). With a Bible reading that is so packed with information, I rely on a good resource like the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible or the Catholic Navarre Bible to help me sort through and understand the reading s meaning. Both of these sources have over three pages of commentary and reference for just these 11 verses!
9 Our Mission is to Encourage Evangelize & Educate For example, the Navarre tells us that the Greek word translated as chose in verse 4 is the same word used in the Old Testament regarding God s election of Israel! This insight provides great significance for each of us! We too are God s chosen people, whether Jew or Gentile! Being familiar with the Mass readings in advance, and exploring the references and explanations in good Catholic sources has greatly enriched my understanding of Scripture. All men are invited to join the Men of the Way of Light as we explore and reflect on Sunday s Scripture readings. Our next meeting is on Saturday, July 28th, immediately following the 8:00 AM Mass. We will meet in the Nazareth Room of the Holy Family Chapel (lower church). Bagels and coffee served. The meeting runs until 10:30 AM. For more information, visit our FaceBook page or pick up one of our business cards displayed at the rear of the Church. Ministry Fair September 23rd A Ministry Fair is essential to generate awareness, enthusiasm, and involvement among our parishioners for the work of the many groups and ministries in our parish. Catholics for Freedom of Religion Free Speech Narrowly Upheld by the Supreme Court: In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of pro-life pregnancy centers by holding that a 2015 California law requiring these centers to promote abortion clinics alongside their pro-life services violates the First Amendment. Advertising or promoting abortion runs directly counter to the very reason pregnancy centers exist - namely to enable and support women who want to choose life for their children. The government has no business forcing these centers to violate their First Amendment right to freedom of speech and, in doing so, work against their life-affirming mission, said Family Research Council president. Justice Anthony Kennedy said the First Amendment bars compelling people to betray their beliefs. He wrote, Governments must not be allowed to force persons to express a message contrary to their deepest convictions. Freedom of Speech secures freedom of thought and belief. This law imperils those liberties. Many are concerned that the matter of protecting First Amendment, Freedom of Speech, was such a close decision.
