Last week we transitioned from the Christmas season to Ordinary Time. The Latin root is "ordo" which means order. One might say, then, that the season of Ordinary Time refers to living an ordered life. Above all, the liturgical year orders our lives around the person of Jesus Christ. Today is the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time. In the Gospel (John 1:29-34) St. John the Baptist states after having seen Jesus at the River Jordan: Now I have seen Him and testified that He is the Son of God. Our true happiness is tooted in Jesus Christ. And so, we begin again to live a more ordered life in our persistent reorientation toward Him. We may have been temporarily dazzled by the glitter of the Christmas marketing empire, but with the re-ordering of our lives at the beginning of Ordinary time, we are dazzled now by the "Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world" (John 1:29) Loving God Gladly Franciscan Parish St. Barnabas Fr. Kevin Cronin, OFM What else are the servants of God, but his minstrels, whose work is to lift up people s hearts to spiritual joy...that they might love God gladly! ~St. Francis of Assisi. Day 1 - Monday, March 6th - God s Love in Jesus brings true joy! Day 2 - Tuesday, March 7th - God s Mercy restores the joy of our youth! Day 3 - Wednesday, March 8th - God s Healing brings new hope!

One of the titles we use to describe Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. What does that mean. First it tells us that He was the One who would choose to die in place of every human being so that all of us could be forgiven and reconciled with God once and for all times. The idea of the sacrificial lamb is rooted in the Exodus story of Israel which was remembered and celebrated in the Passover on an annual basis. The tenth plague God put on the land of Egypt was the death of every first-born male child. The only way to prevent this fate was to sacrifice/slaughter a lamb (Ex 12:1-30). Some of the lamb's blood was put on the sides and top of the door frame of the house, and seeing this blood, the Lord's angel of death would pass by this house without doing any harm to the inhabitants. In later history, the sacrificial lamb became a symbol for the atonement of the priests and all God's people on the Day of Atonement and for other religious feasts. By offering up the life of a lamb in a religious ritual, the sin of the people would be spiritually transferred onto the lamb and the participants in the ritual would experience forgiveness from God for the sins they had committed. So, when John the Baptist called Jesus the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, he was making a reference to the sacrificial lamb on a new scale. He proclaimed that Jesus would make a sacrifice so significant that the whole world, not just a few participants in a religious service, could experience forgiveness of sin and redemption. Certainly that was an amazing calling, a painful road and a momentous task. It was Jesus' higher purpose in life. I believe all of us have a calling for a higher purpose in life, albeit on a lower scale than the one Jesus was called to. While there are many reasons for our existence, instinctively most of us know that we have been put on this earth for a higher purpose. The thing is that often we don't understand our higher calling until late in life, and some of us never really find out. Think about the artist van Gogh or composer Mozart who both died in poverty and fameless never knowing the way in which they would touch and bless the world after their death. Jesus himself only found out in the last tenth of his life; for 30 years he was a carpenter, only in the last 3 years of his life did he truly live out his higher calling. Maybe some of us know and understand our higher calling in life, but there are probably many of us who are still wondering and trying to find out what that purpose is. And there is nothing wrong with that; the important thing is that we keep asking, searching, and praying. And as we do, God will continue to lead us. And as we stay open to God's leading, God will send affirmations, often in unexpected places like the wilderness and from unexpected people, like a locust-eating, camel-skin wearing preacher. The important thing is that we keep believing in our higher calling and that we keep searching for a better understanding of our higher purpose in life. God will use us to change the world if we're willing and open to it.

St. Barnabas Marriage Preparation The Five Stages of Love. Phase 1: Falling In Love Phase 2: Becoming a Couple Phase 3: Disillusionment Phase 4: Creating Real, Lasting Love Phase 5: Using the Power of Two to Change the World Opening: 2/12 Sunday 6PM Holy Family Chapel Foccus Online: 2/13 Monday thru 2/17 Friday Foccus Review: 2/20 Monday thru 2/24 Friday In Home: 2/26 Sunday thru 4/2 Sunday Closing Mass: 4/23 Sunday 5PM St. Barnabas PHASE # 1: PASSION IN LOVE This stage is feels wonderful. It s a kind of better living through chemistry as the saying goes because when we fall in love, we are inundated with hormones like dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, testosterone and estrogen. This is the point where we project all of our hopes and dreams into the other person. We believe that all the promises that our previous relationships have failed to deliver will ultimately be met. We are sure to remain in love forever because this person seems so perfect, so true, so right like the answer to our dreams. PHASE # 2: BECOMING A COUPLE Here love deepens and develops and the two come together as a couple, and this is a moment of unity and joy: We learn what the other person likes and we expand our individual lives to start developing a we two life. We feel more connected with the loved one, safe and protected. Many times we think that this is the maximum level of love and we expect that it should continue like this forever. But then Phase 3 inevitably arrives. PHASE # 3: DISILLUSIONMENT It is at this stage where a relationship will find new strength or will falter. The first glow of love is wearing away; the perfect ideal begins to show human faults, unreasonableness, unattractive behavior. Little things begin to irritate us. People feel less loved and cared for and more responsible. Trapped is a word some use. At this stage we can get busy with work or family, but dissatisfaction accumulates. The inevitable question arises: What happened to that fun, giving, loving person I thought I knew? The break up looms; do we just give up or should we try to persist? There s an old saying, When you re going through hell, don t stop. This seems relevant to Stage 3. The positive side of Stage 3 is that the heat burns away a lot of our illusions about ourselves and our partner. We have an opportunity to become more loving and appreciate the person we are with, not the projections we had placed on them as our ideal mate. PHASE # 4: CREATION OF REAL AND LASTING LOVE One of the gifts of facing unhappiness in Phase 3 is that we can get to the heart of what causes pain and conflict. After walking through the fire the two learn to be allies by learning to console each other in their failings, and helping to understand that human faults can exist amid real love. That understanding can help a couple heal each other s wounds. We come to learn that if our dreams are broken, the one

you love is someone who is capable of loving you for being exactly who you are. There is nothing more satisfying than being with a partner who sees you and loves you for who you are. They understand that your harmful behavior is not because you are bad or loveless, but because you have been hurt in the past and the past still lives with you. As we better understand and accept our partner, we can learn to love ourselves more and more deeply. PHASE # 5: USING THE POWER OF TWO TO CHANGE THE WORLD This is the stage where differences and doubts have been overcome, trust and companionship are so strengthened that the two can cause differences in the world from their real and lasting love. If we can learn to overcome our differences and find real and lasting love in our relationships, who knows, we can work together to find real and lasting love in the world. This is an opportunity to together use the power of two to direct a purpose of life together, in a way that can positively impact the world. A couple that has learned to see each other fully, to accept each other, and love each other in all their imperfections is a couple who, having traveled through these phases has a solid foundation for seeing, accepting and loving others. Books available at St. Barnabas Church Door, including this one. The author is a parishioner Vincent Scialo.

Confirmation Monday, May 10:00 AM & 2:00 PM Level 7 Wednesday January 18th Where Am I Going? (Chapter 7) Looking for the Last Four Things Return Reflection #7 at any St. Barnabas Mass on the weekend of 1/21-22 or 1/28-29 Level 8 Thursday January 19th Who Is The Holy Spirit? (Chapter 12) The Third Person Of The Trinity Return Reflection #7 at any St. Barnabas Mass on the weekend of 1/21-22 or 1/28-29 The purpose of this lesson is to convey the truth about what happens after death, sometimes called the four last things : death, judgment, heaven, and hell. While the subject of life after death makes some people uncomfortable, God in his great mercy reveals these truths to us for two reasons: first, to give us a chance to prepare ourselves for that final journey, and second, so that each day we will remember death full of the hope that each day brings us closer to attaining the end for which we were created: lifelong union with God. The glory to which every person on earth is called reveals how we should live our lives here and now. Conversation After Class Who in our family has died that we can pray for? Why do you think God created a place of purification after death-purgatory? (See CCC ) If you only had one week left to live, what would you do with that time? What do you think heaven is like? Why do you want to go there? The purpose of this lesson is to encourage us to understand who the Holy Spirit is and to cultivate a relationship with the Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Blessed Trinity. The Age of the Spirit began at Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended to lead them to all the truth (John 16:13) as the apostles built up the Church all over the world. The Holy Spirit was present at Creation, has worked throughout salvation history, enters us at Baptism, and seals each person at Confirmation with an indelible mark, empowering him or her with all that is necessary to accomplish what God has in store. Conversation After Class Why do we need the Holy Spirit? What is Pentecost? (This event was when the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles and empowered them to begin preaching the gospel throughout the whole world.) (See Acts 2) Why is the Holy Spirit sometimes called the hidden Person of the Trinity? (The Holy Spirit helps us to be holy, but as a silent strength within us. The Holy Spirit helps each of us to do our appointed job within the Church.
