3 A Catholic Community in Bellmore, New York, Since 1912 St. Barnabas 2016 Confirmation Candidates Rite of Enrollment at all Masses this weekend May and Mother's Day The springtime month of May is popularly devoted to Mary. Statues dedicated to her are showered with bouquets and crowns of flowers. The second Sunday of May, Mother's Day often takes on Marian nuances. There was an annual Mothering Sunday celebrated in England on the fourth Sunday of Lent at least from the 17th century until the early 19th. Our Mother's Day tradition began through the efforts of Anna M. Jarvis ( ) with church services in Grafton, West Virginia, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in honor of Anna Jarvis's own mother. In 1910, the governor of Oklahoma issued the first Mother's Day proclamation. The following year all the states did so. Congress and the Executive Office cooperated in 1913 in a national resolution establishing the second Sunday of May as Mother's Day. Anna Jarvis died, disillusioned that her religious efforts had become almost entirely secular and commercial. Incidentally, a Father's Day observance seems to have begun in Spokane, Washington, by Sonora Smart Dodd in Loving Father, look with kindness on all the mothers here today. Bless them with joy love, laughter and pride in their family and surround them with many good friends. (From today s Prayer of the Faithful) O Sweet Mother Mary, give me a heart that is fresh and open as the heart of a child, and as transparent as the waters of a clear spring. Give me a generous heart that does not brood over the unpleasant things it has encountered. A magnanimous heart that gladly gives itself. A heart that knowing its own weakness, understands and becomes more deeply sympathetic towards the weaknesses of others; a deep and grateful heart that does not overlook small things. Give me a heart that is gentle and humble and loves without expecting love in return; that gladly leaves another s heart to give way to your Son. A noble and buoyant heart that will not become embittered by disappointments; that because of its faults will not become ungenerous in its sacrifices; that will not be paralyzed by trials; that will not be irritated by neglect; and that will not be discouraged by indifference. But give me a heart that in its love of Jesus will be drawn by an irresistible current towards the further honor and glory of Jesus Christ, and will find no rest until I enter into heaven. 4 Today we welcome the 2016 Confirmation Candidates from the Parish of St. Barnabas Parish. At Mass they will present a letter requesting to receive the sacrament on May 23rd. Members of their family will accompany them to the sanctuary as a symbol that we journey to God together. It s appropriate that today is also Mother s Day when we thank those maternal figures in our lives who have loved us and guided us in life. MEAN MOTHERS Did you know I had the meanest mother in the world! While growing up other kids had candy for breakfast, I had to eat my cereal, eggs and toast. While other kids had cakes and candy for lunch, I had a sandwich. As you can guess my supper was different from other kids' supper too. My mother was so mean that she insisted on knowing where we were at all times. You'd think we were in a prison or something. She had to know who our friends were and what we were doing. I am ashamed to admit this, but my Mother actually had the nerve to break the child labor laws. She made us work. We had to wash dishes, make the beds and learn how to cook and clean. I think my mother must have stayed awake at night thinking of things for us kids to do. And she insisted that we tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. She never let us get away with anything. By the time we were teenagers my mother was even wiser and our life became even more unbearable. She would tears. embarrass us by insisting that our friends come to the door instead of tooting the car horn for us to come running. And she always insisted that we be home early on school nights and never let us stay out late on weekends like all our other friends. We missed so much fun. Mother was so mean that she refused to let us date at the mature age of 13 or 14, like so many of our friends did. Instead she kept telling us that there was a lot of time - and that we needed to grow up a bit first. Mother really raised a bunch of squares. None of us was arrested for shoplifting or busted for dope. And who do we have to thank for this - you're right - our mean old mother. Yes, there were times when we thought our Mom was the Meanest Mother in the World. She said what she meant and meant what she said. It s now we realize that she knew it would lead to us becoming better adults. Thank God for such mothers. Like the best of mothers, God wants to protect us, to guide us, to instruct us, to heal us, to forgive us, to love us and to kiss away our God wants to grow up to be happy, productive adults. So thanks be to God for all the loving persons in our lives who raise children to stand a little straighter and taller and teach us what God is like. Now Moms, you can giggle to yourself when your children call you mean. Our country needs more mean Mothers like that.

Today is the day set aside to honor and appreciate our mothers. It s so easy to take them for granted when they are there and doing what they do best to take care of us! Remember to show mom you love her today! Spend some time with her! May is also the month to honor Mary, the Blessed Mother. This a great month to pray the Rosary. Chances are you have Rosary Beads. You can download a free app to show you how to pray the Rosary if it s been a while. Even if you pray the Rosary often, using an app is a great help in prayer. Mary is a great example, because even though she was a human being, she knew to say yes to God. That is not always easy is it? She trusted and said yes and I m sure her whole life was a yes to God. I think that she can be a real role model to us in our lives. Today s first reading is another example of really saying yes to God. We have the example of St. Stephen a deacon of the Church and our first martyr. The first reading tells of the end of his life. He knew he was going to have to die for his faith but never stopped saying yes to God. We are not asked to say yes in the ways of Mary or Stephen, but we are asked to say yes in our daily lives. I often talk about how we live our lives as people of faith. This is a great time in the Church calendar to think about that. My challenge for you is to find one way this week to say yes to God in your daily life! Have a blessed week! Peggy Join us Friday, May 20th from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM! We ll start with games both outside and in the gym! We ll have a party to celebrate the birthday of the Church! Come check us out! Open to Middle School kids and High School kids

14 Goodnight Mom Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray my sanity to keep. For if some peace I do not find, I'm pretty sure I'll lose my mind. I pray I find a little quiet Far from the daily family riot May I lie back not have to think about what they're stuffing down the sink, or who they're with, or where they're at and what they're doing to the cat. I pray for time all to myself (did something just fall off a shelf?) To cuddle in my nice, soft bed (Oh no, another goldfish dead!) Some silent moments for goodness sake (Did I just hear a window break?) And that I need not cook or clean (well heck, I've got the right to dream) Yes now I lay me down to sleep, I pray my wits about me keep, But as I look around I know I must have lost them long ago!
