3 On July 26, Bishop William Murphy, Diocese of Rockville Centre, posted the following: Terrorist attack at Church of Saint Etienne-du-Rouvray, France Before going to chapel in the morning I usually check ANSA, the Italian version of AP. There it was, another terrorist attack this time in a parish church of St. Etienne du Rouvray in the northern French city of Rouen. Two men shouting Daesh, the Arabic word for ISIS and Allah ak Bar. They slit the throat of the priest as he was celebrating Mass, wounded three, one of whom is in grave condition and took four hostages, 2 religious sisters and 2 lay faithful, all attending Mass. ISIS has claimed responsibility for two of their soldiers and once again France has become the victim of hatred, violence and rejection of any persons or groups ISIS labels as their enemies. The President of France, M. Hollande with the Minister of the Interior, M. Cazaneuve, went to Rouen and were on the scene this morning. The Holy Father in Poland condemned the action and called for prayer. The Archbishop, also in Poland for World Youth Day, has returned to his people. Every decent human being can do none other than condemn these atrocities and support all those, armed forces, police and international forces that protect the innocent. That is normal. As a Catholic I recoil from several things. First of all seeing an international network of terrorist thugs able to destroy the innocent at will is bad enough. But they try to cloak their lawless violence under an appeal to their religion which makes a mockery of all those Muslims who are true adherents of their faith. Second as a Catholic I recoil at seeing a parish church turned into a killing field. Yet that has been happening all across the Middle East now for many years. Third I wonder about the irony that these morally bankrupt leaders of Daesh look on Christianity as an integral component of western civilization when Europe stands today as a denier that Christianity is even part of their heritage. Yet if I am honest I have to admit that the secularist model of Europe without Christian roots is exactly what is happening here in my own country. Even the mention of God is challenged in our country today. Progressives and secularists announce that if religion disagrees with their agenda, then the religion needs to be changed. And it goes on and on. Before I say my rosary for the victims at St. Etienne Church may I add two things, one factual, the other more important. Bret Stephens in today s Wall Street Journal (July 26) challenges us all when he asks Is Europe Helpless? and suggests that a civilization that believes in nothing will ultimately submit to anything. In short the challenge we face is a moral one. Because I believe that is factually true, I close with the more important invitation. Please join me as I say my rosary because without a sense of God and the redemption of His Son, our union in the Holy Spirit which makes us as Church witnesses to the true meaning of life, given to us through Mary, our Mother, we too will end up believing in nothing and submitting to whatever is the predominant power of the day.

4 I hope that your summer has blessed you with many special moments. Maybe your moment came on a beach or in a garden. Maybe that moment came when you watched your child graduate from school, or when you played with your grandchildren. Today s gospel has a lot to do with leisure, with living, with getting a fresh perspective on things It's a story about this person whose land produces a bumper crop. No problems so far. If there is a problem its a good problem - he's blessed with abundance. So Jesus says that he demolishes his existing buildings in order to make room for the surplus crop. Still no problems with his actions. He's worked hard. And now an adequate facility needs to be built to expand his business. So far, we're exactly in line with this fellow; we've done the same thing we do in most of our churches - we added air conditioning and fresh paint, add extra space and give the youth their own room. So we've torn our barns down in order to build bigger ones. No problem here. But then Jesus lets us overhear this person as he begins to talk to himself; a sort of brain to wallet to soul meeting. You've made it! You ve really made it! No more work for you; you can just ease on into retirement and live off the interest. You know eat, drink, and be merry kinds of stuff. Just live off the interest? Just ease out of life? Just unplug ourselves from life and take it easy? However another voice breaks into this person s thought. Fool, says God. Tonight your soul will be required. So then who'll get your things; you certainly won't. Seems to be a straightforward story about greed. Billions of dollars have been pumped into our world to try and convince us that Jesus was wrong, about greed. The average child has watched 15,000 TV commercials before he or she even starts school. But there is something more here. Something much larger than greed. Something to do with the way we view life and death. The fool apparently believed what so many people believe today, that you only go around once in life. That the only life we have is the here and now. Not sure about heaven, or don't care much about eternity; what we do have is the present. You see, if you and I hold to that kind of attitude make a killing and enjoy it now because we sure won't be able to enjoy it after we're dead. But the Gospel reminds us that though we live in the world like everyone else, life does not consist in things, but in our relationship that God has initiated with us through Jesus. We are people who by our baptism have pledged ourselves to another - Jesus. We are truly free to make our living, rise in our careers, raise children, bury our dead - all within the larger awareness that God has more riding on us than just this life. Eat, drink, and be merry! That's what summers and families are about. But when it comes to how we view this world, well eat, drink, and be wise for tomorrow you live.

7 Food Pantry Weekend August 6th & 7th. At this time we are in need of a little extra help as some of our resources are a bit low. We are most in need of: paper products, dishwashing liquid, laundry detergent, bar soap, toothpaste, cleaning products, shampoo/conditioner, coffee, tea, sugar, condiments, pancake syrup and powdered milk. We are most grateful for any help and truly appreciate your generosity. St. Vincent de Paul Society In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable about the rich man who selfishly stored all the grain and goods only to die and not enjoy his abundance anyway. When we give to the poor, God indeed pours his love, peace and joy into our lives and into the hearts of those who are poor and needy. Please continue to support SVDP by placing your unwanted good clothes in our clothing bin located in our church parking lot on the Washington Ave. side. Please pray for the poor and needy. Thank you. Friends of the Poor Walk. Save Saturday, September 24th for the Friends of the Poor Walk. The St. Barnabas St. Vincent de Paul Society will take part in the walk at Bethpage Community Park, 1001 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, (Look for the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center). Put on your sneakers and walk with us as we become God s feet, walking to end poverty one step at a time. Watch the bulletin for more information. Keep the poor in your prayers. Friendly Visitor Program Our St. Vincent de Paul Society is introducing a new program for our homebound seniors and those disabled in the community who would enjoy a visit from one of its members. If you or someone you know is interested and would enjoy the company of a friendly visitor please call the Social Ministry Office at Back to School It has been a long tradition here at St. Barnabas to assist families with back to school needs for the new school year. The children are in need of backpacks and the supplies to fill them. Some of those items include: notebooks, (spiral & marble), loose leaf, binders, folders, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, sharpies, highlighters, rulers, compasses, glue sticks, index cards, scissors, sharpeners, pencil boxes, scotch tape and construction paper. Any donation of supplies, or gift cards would be so helpful to many of our families. Gift cards to Payless shoes would be another way of assisting with the many back to school expenses. We will start our collection now through the month of August. Please leave your donation in the back of the church, or bring it to the rectory. As always, on behalf of those we serve, thank you for your generosity and support. 10 Thank you to all those who have volunteered to help prepare our Catholic youth in the parish in the Confirmation preparation process called Chosen. Thirty people have already signed up. Twenty more are needed. If you are interested please read on... Many parents, grandparents and parishioners today are really concerned about the decline in faith among younger people and their families. How do we reach this fast-paced, tech-savvy generation with the love of Christ. How do we communicate the teachings of the Church in a way that speaks to those caught up in an increasingly secular world? Whether or not they know it, teens today have hearts and minds made to dive in to the Good News of the gospel. Just as the God of the universe transformed human history two thousand years ago, he wants to transform the hearts of young people, here and now. This life-changing divine encounter isn t a flashy event or a new philosophy; it is a person: Jesus Christ. Instead of encountering God on the crowded streets of Jerusalem, our young people will encounter him in the sacraments, in the teachings of the Church, in their parish community, in experiences of service, and, in a special way, in you. It s our prayer that by participating in Chosen you will help facilitate an encounter with God himself. As you prepare young people for the Sacrament of Confirmation, you will help empower them to be the saints and kingdom builders they are called to be, as you become a saint and kingdom builder yourself. The youth are the Church of today We do this not because of what we have to give young people, but because of what they have to give to the Church and the world when they open their hearts to God. The young people we serve are not the Church of tomorrow any more than you are the Church of yesterday. The youth are the Church of today! This is the most important work in human history: echoing the Good News that God has revealed to every generation. All Chosen meetings will be held on Wednesday OR Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30PM, in the Holy Family Chapel. Meetings begin with a prayer, an activity, a TV presentation, followed by small group discussion. Each small group will have 8 young members, from Grade 7 or 8! Chosen materials will be supplied. All you have to do is to facilitate a conversation, with provided questions, around the night s topic. Just 11 meetings (one and a half hours each) with eight students.
