3 Be An Angel Gift-giving and gift-receiving are meant to remind us of the real meaning behind our celebration of Christmas - God s priceless gift of His Son, Jesus. And since the time that Mary and Joseph wandered homeless into Bethlehem, providing for the needy has always been a Christmas tradition. So, again this year, our parish will make available baskets filled with Angel Tags, each angel carrying the name of a gift needed by someone in our community. You are invited to take home an angel or two this weekend, and bring your gifts to the church lobby. A special collection box will be placed in the church lobby for gift cards & certificates or you may bring them to the rectory. Please securely attach your Angel Tags, but do not wrap the gifts, as we will have wrap and ribbon available to go with them. Please make sure you beat the December 12th deadline! Any gifts we receive after this time will be donated to St. Brigid s, Our Holy Redeemer, and Queen of the Most Holy Rosary where the need there is so great. God bless your generosity...and through it may Jesus be born once more in all of our hearts this Christmas. Bread & Wine The Eucharistic Bread & Wine for the week will be offered in loving memory of Margaret McBride from her family. Sanctuary Lamp The Sanctuary Lamp Candle will be lit this week in loving memory of Ralph & Lucy Gallipani from their daughter Josephine Maggio. Divine Mercy Please join us to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy following the 9:00 AM Mass every Monday through Friday and after the 8:00 AM Mass on Saturdays. 5 Our Lady of Guadalupe Patroness of the Americas When we reflect on the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe we learn two important lessons, one of faith and one of understanding. Missionaries who first came to Mexico with the conquistadors had little success in the beginning. After nearly a generation, only a few hundred Native Mexicans had converted to the Christian faith. Whether they simply did not understand what the missionaries had to offer or whether they resented these people who make them slaves, Christianity was not popular among the native people. Then in 1531 miracles began to happen. Jesus own mother appeared to humble Juan Diego. The signs -- of the roses, of the uncle miraculously cured of a deadly illness, and especially of her beautiful image on Juan s mantle -- convinced the people there was something to be considered in Christianity. Within a short time, six million Native Mexicans had themselves baptized as Christians. The first lesson is that God has chosen Mary to lead us to Jesus. No matter what critics may say of the devotion of Mexicans (and Mexican descendents) to Our Lady of Guadalupe, they owe their Christianity to her influence. If it were not for her, they would not know her son, and so they are eternally grateful. The second lesson we take from Mary herself. Mary appeared to Juan Diego not as a European Madonna but as a beautiful Aztec princess speaking to him his own Aztec language. If we want to help someone appreciate the gospel we bring, we must appreciate the culture and the mentality in which they live their lives. By understanding them, we can help them to understand and know Christ. ~ Advent...Waiting for Love to be Reborn Sunday, December 14th; 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM Tabor Retreat Center 60 Anchor Avenue, Oceanside Taking the journey, knocking at the inn...and rediscovering Jesus is the gift not wrapped but there in the ordinary and extraordinary events of our lives. The donation is $15. The presenter is Sr. Ave Clark, OP, a Dominican Sister of Amityville. She is the author of several books and articles on spirituality and healing. Sr. Ave is a pastoral counselor and the co-coordinator of Heart-to-Heart Ministry. Sister Ave comes to her ministry with a gentle heart that love to pray. 9 December 7, 2014 Hi everyone! This is the page for St Barnabas Life Teen. I m Peggy Harnisch your youth minister!! Hi Everyone, Prepare the way! This is the theme that jumps out to me this week. It is the second week of Advent and we are already inundated with TV commercials suggesting we shop more, decorate more, bake more and celebrate more. The season of Advent, and the reading today remind us to prepare in a different way. In the Gospel, people are coming to John to be baptized and he reminds them that someone greater is coming. The people of the time must not have know what he meant, but his message was for us as well as the people of John s time. How do we prepare our hearts for Jesus? I like to ask myself if I m getting carried away with Christmas. For the Church, the Christmas season does not begin after Advent, but the world is fully in the Christmas season. While some of this is unavoidable, if we are getting carried away we can t be preparing our hearts to celebrate the incarnation. In the Gospel, people were repenting of their sins this is a great time to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Each day we can do something to prepare the way. Tomorrow is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. We celebrate the fact that Mary was set apart from us and conceived without sin. Mary is a great example of preparing the way of the Lord! Have a blessed week! ~ Peggy Upcoming High School Youth Ministry nights December 14th - The Summit!!! We ll start with games and talk about the summit of our faith! Special Events!!!! 12/19/14 Service project!! Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang - 7:00 pm in the School Cafeteria. Everyone invited! Thanks to donations of Peanut Butter and Jelly, we re asking everyone to bring a loaf or two of bread with them on that night! If you ve never been to a Youth Ministry night, we love you to try it out! Peggy for info!! 12/21/14 - Christmas Party - grades 6 through 12 invited!!
