1 TAWAS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Volume 45 Issue 9 September 2018 Last month a group of bicyclers stopped in our church parking lot as a rendezvous point for what was apparently the start of a long-distance training ride. Their bikes and racing apparel spoke volumes. I just knew they were training for the September triathlon here in Tawas. A few of them nodded yes in response to my inquiry about that, as they rode off. The 3D Triathlon is one of many special events that brings tourists to our area. Bicycle riding is a tremendous way to keep fit, and competitive riding can keep a person at peak performance physically. Anyone who commits to that kind of training must devote themselves to at least a couple hours a day of intense exercise. It s an impressive level of motivation that leads a person to make such a commitment. Remembering those bicyclers, I am also reminded of the spiritual training necessary for peak performance in a walk with God. Paul, the author of many letters in the New Testament, wrote to his disciple, Timothy: Train yourself in godliness, 8 for, while physical training is of some value, godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 9 The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance. 10 For to this end we toil and struggle, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.1 Timothy 4:7 10 Training in godliness characterizes the Christian life. Paul took a moment to instill this truth in his young disciple. Paul s comparison of godliness with physical training leads us to conclude that the two require similar levels of devotion. On the other hand, the underlying motivations are worlds apart. One trains in godliness out of gratitude to Jesus Christ for his sacrifice and victory over death. We who train in godliness have our sights set on God. On the other hand physical training seeks to achieve higher levels of physical performance and overall health. September brings various opportunities to inspire us toward training in godliness. I hope you will take advantage of these excellent opportunities. Sunday school begins for all ages with our kick-off potluck September 9 and classes begin Sunday September 16. A Wednesday evening study of the book, Dinner Church, begins September 12 for 7 weeks. A new weekend sermon series begins Labor Day weekend. The series title is, 10 Things I Wish Jesus Hadn t Said, But I m Really Glad He Did, based on books with similar titles by Steve Timmis and Victor Kuligin. Our Tawas 3D Triathlon will attract many spectators. I hope to be among them, witnessing the event. I want to experience vicariously the competitive emotion of the race. I hope to observe some of the different age group victors cross the finish line. But I think all the participants will be victorious in some way. Even the person who comes in last will gain the reward of knowing they trained, and participated, and crossed the finish line. Wherever we are in our spiritual training, I want to encourage us to keep going. Let s train with all of our heart. Let s run the race set out before us. Let s keep our eyes on the prize. I hope we all have a happy Labor Day weekend and delightful September. Pastor Kris
