We paid off the Sanctuary roof! Now, it is time to celebrate. We'll have a mortgage burning celebration as part of our annual picnic. This will be held on Sunday, September 16th. We will again be having this at Spross Park, so please head down to the park after worship that day. You can bring a chair and a dish to share. We'll be having some fried chicken, cake, ice cream, charred paper, games, and much more! You're sure to have a good time, and we're looking forward to being able to celebrate the diligence of the church in paying off the loan that was necessary to replace the Sanctuary roof. Now that it is paid off, we can focus on other important matters. Come help us celebrate this milestone as we move toward new ones! Back to school things have been on my mind of late. Asking students about the first week of school; getting back into a rhythm of Barbara going to work early; deciding which sporting events, or other activities, to attend; wondering what my next classes will be like. Thinking on the varieties of school things, I remember one of the more challenging classes I have taken in the last three years. The usual preclass work seemed almost excessive. Extra time was spent rewriting assignments. Sleep during the week of class came considerably later than planned. The final grade of B was met with sincere gratitude and relief. It was probably one of the most beneficial classes I have taken. (No disrespect for the other classes; this one just seemed to have added benefits.) I came away from the class with more noteworthy notes. I gained a few skills in dealing with challenges. My opinion on a couple social issues gained more clarity. I became a better writer of academic papers. In short, I walked away from the class better prepared for my task as Pastor. Looking back, I believe the respect I developed for my instructor had a lot to do with his treating the class as people who could make a difference. As such, the expectations needed to be as high as the possibilities. In some ways that is how it is with the (Continued on page 2)

However inviting its message may be, there remains a part of the good news that calls us to a standard with short-term perks that are not so warm and fuzzy. Reviews need to be made. Purposes need to be clarified. Skills need to be gained....to the family of Donald Frischman, who passed on August 2, He was Kim Kingsland s dad, and cards can be sent to the family at : Lake Shore Dr. Blackwell, MO to the family of Joan Mason, who passed on August 5, She was Linda Bean s mother, and cards can be sent to the family at: The good news is, we are guided by One who sees the difference we can make, and empowers us to make that difference. May we be a people in school, in church, in life living in to the difference that is the high calling of Jesus Christ. Blessings S. Main St. De Soto, MO Singspiration Music Notes Nancy Rosevink and Charla Wilson will be bringing special music to worship on September 2nd. Be sure to claim your pew that morning! Sure, it's a holiday weekend, so bring your visiting family and friends too. We are hosting Singspiration in September! It will be held Sunday, September 30th at 6 PM. Choirs and musicians from around the community will perform and money collected will be given to the Ministerial Alliance. These musical events happen on the 5th Sunday of the month and are a good opportunity to listen to Christian music, hymns and gospel alike, while raising some money for the Ministerial Alliance. Money given to the Ministerial Alliance meets the needs of local people needing rent, utilities, and other items. Please join us for this musical event. The Chancel Choir is back at it. Practice resumes August 29th, and the choir will be present in worship beginning September 9th. Also in September, we'll be hosting Singspiration! During morning worship on Sunday, September 30th, we'll have a Fifth Sunday service with lots of singing, including our youth. Then, in the evening, we'll have more singing with participation from across the faith community for Singspiration. Please makes plans to attend. Frank s Annual Pig Roast will be Sunday, September 2! All are invited to attend. Bring a dish to share and head out to Frank s after worship. Contact the church office for directions if you re a pig roast newcomer. 3 Food Pantry Need There are some items that the food pantry distributes each month; other items get distributed less frequently. Now is the time of year when the pantry runs low on the items distributed every month. This includes boxed pastas and jell-o. Specifically, they need: pasta without meat, like Spaghetti-os, Hamburger Helper, boxed macaroni and cheese, and flavored gelatin that just requires adding water, like Jell-o (not the pudding). There are five Sundays during September, so if you can bring an item each Sunday, that should give us a diverse selection to send to the pantry and meet some of their short-term needs too. If you want to do more than just bring an item, you can also volunteer at the pantry. They will need help at the following times: Tuesday, September 4 th at 10 AM Thursday, September 6 th at 5 PM Friday, September 7 th at 10 AM Saturday, September 8 th at 8:45 AM Marks of a Methodist The region has again decided to incorporate the Charge Conference into a learning event. This year, it will be held on October 28 at 2:30 PM at Centenary UMC in Bonne Terre. Bishop Farr's "Marks of a Methodist" will be Gateway Regional's fall learning event. More details and sign-ups to come. 3 To St. Andrew s, Thank You Thank you so much for all of your thoughts, prayers, visits, and phone calls during my mother s illness. It meant so much to us. My mother fought the good fight, and it brings us comfort that she is at peace. Movie Night Sunday, September 9th at 5 PM! Love, Linda & Joe Bean For the September Movie Night, we ll be viewing the 1989 classic Field of Dreams. The movie is about an Iowa farmer, Ray Kinsella, and his reaction when he hears a voice in his corn field tell him, If you build it, he will come. He interprets this message as an instruction to build a baseball field on his farm, upon which appear the ghosts of Shoeless Joe Jackson and the other seven Chicago White Sox players banned from the game for throwing the 1919 World Series. When the voices continue, Ray seeks out a reclusive author to help him understand the meaning of the messages and the purpose for his field. Festival of Sharing G oal: 50 Missouri Student Dental Packs We are hoping to get enough materials together to take 50 Missouri Student Dental Packs to the Festival of Sharing. The items needed are children s toothbrushes, adult toothbrushes, tubes of toothpaste (at least 6 ounces), and a packet of floss. All items need to be unopened, and you can deposit your donation at the back of the Sanctuary in the corresponding bins by October 4th. If you prefer to donate money to the cause, that is fine too. Just make sure to designation it on your check.

4 SEE YOU AT THE POLE New Youth Meetings The August 25th Youth Rally at the park was just the beginning. Regular cooperative youth meetings will be held on the first and third Wednesday of each month at the De Soto Community Center. These meetings are in partnership with First UMC and Victoria UMC. The churches involved will work together to bring interesting youth programming to all who attend. We look forward to this new partnership and hope you ll make plans to attend. The meeting dates for September are the 5 th and 19 th. Meetings will begin at 6:30 PM and end at 8 PM. Refreshments will be served. SEPT 26 Next Gen Academy You should already know about this if you re between the ages of 13 and 18. This is just your reminder about NextGen Academy. September 22 Columbia 9:30-3:00 PM This is a free event, and lunch will be provided. Registration must be completed by September 14 th at noon, and if you have any concerns about transportation, please contact the church office. Youth 2019 is for all United Methodist youth, grades 6-12, and their leaders. Join thousands for 4 days of discipleship, worship, Bible study, service opportunities, and life-changing fun! 6 DeSoto Farmer s Market News September 15, 2018 is Celebrate Our Heritage. There will be demonstrations during the morning at the market, and then come that evening to see the market transformed into a true shindig. There will be demonstrations, a cake walk, dessert auction, barbecue, and more. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for kids. You can purchase tickets in the church office, at the market, and at other locations around town. Get Healthy DeSoto News Also in September, Get Healthy DeSoto has partnered with the De Soto Chamber of Commerce to host a Cycle Parade as part of the Fall Festival on September 22 nd. Targeting kids, this is a chance to ride Main Street, be creative, compete for a prize, and get a free bicycle helmet. 6
