Syria is the home of our Patriarchate which is located on Straight Street in Damascus where St. Paul was taken to regain the sight he lost when encountering Jesus Christ (Acts 9) and has maintained continuous succession in the Apostolic Faith. 3 SUNDAY, JANUARY 13th, 1:00 pm The Outdoor Blessing of Water and Cross Dive in celebration of Theophany will be held at the home of Alice & Len Hawrilenko 5214 Pale Moon Drive; Pensacola In Perdido Bay Country Club Estates There will be two divisions of Cross Divers: (1) Children up to 8th graders (2) 9th graders through adults ******************* Following the Cross Dive, we will break bread together with an indoor picnic. Please bring a dish to share: vegetable, salad, fruit, or dessert. Hotdogs, hamburgers, and soft drinks will be provided by the Parish Council. Cutting of the Vasilopita (St. Basil s Bread) for January 1st sponsored by Sisterhood of St. Photini Antiochian Women Each of you are invited to bake a St. Basil s bread (Vasilopita) for the Feast of St. Basil, celebrated with the Divine Liturgy on Tuesday, January 1st, 10:00a.m. Contact Syd Werthmuller to obtain a gold dollar coin to place in your bread or cake in keeping with St. Basil s tradition, or you may obtain your own. The Cutting of the Vasilopita will take place in the Great Room following the Divine Liturgy for St. Basil the Great and Circumcision of The Lord. At this time, each person is given a slice of a bread or cake maybe YOU will be one to receive a gold coin! The Sisters request that each person/family make a donation of your choosing when you receive your slice: Donations received at the cutting of the Vasilopita during Coffee Fellowship on January 1st will be given to Fr. David s Discretionary Fund. Please let Fr. David or Betsy Werre (rbwerre@att.net or ) know by Tuesday, January 1 of those who are planning to participate in the Cross Dive, along with sweat shirt sizes. 4 Fr. David will be blessing homes throughout January, following Theophany on January 6th. Please contact him to schedule the blessing of your home. BLESSING OF HOMES The central sign of our acceptance of God s sanctification of the creation is the blessing of the homes of faithful Orthodox Christians. We annually bless homes: a. To reveal the home as what God created it to be, a way to heaven. b. To rid the home of every evil. c. To show that the family is a small church unit in Christ. d. To consecrate the home and all activity in it to God, filling the home and all who live in it with the fullness of God. Only the Church reveals what life is, and She alone is the Kingdom of God on earth. The Church lives within Christ, revealing Him to us. As the Church, we sprinkle blessed water throughout the home, as we chant, By Thy baptism, O Lord, in the river Jordan worship of the Trinity hath made its appearance, for the voice of the Lord did come forth to Thee with the testimony naming Thee beloved Son; and the Spirit, in the likeness of a dove, confirming the truth of the word. Wherefore, O Thou Who didst appear and lighted the world, O Christ, glory to Thee. The priest consecrates the home to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and, in this act, the Church blesses, reveals and sanctifies. When the priest comes for the house blessing, please be mindful of these guidelines: 1. Have as many family members present as possible. 2. Set up a place for prayers, in the dining room or kitchen, with an icon and a candle. (or this can be done at your family s icon corner) 3. Print the first names of those for whom special prayers are to be offered, including all family members on a sheet of paper. 4. Take this time to get to know the priest better, asking any questions you may have. 5. If a child wants some time to talk to the priest alone, respect his/her privacy and make the opportunity. 6. Make the priest aware of any special needs you may have. 7. Tell the priest about any family members who are in nursing homes or in need of a visit. **************************** Fr. David will begin the Blessing of Homes during the week following the Feast of Theophany celebrated on Sunday, January 6th.
