1 T HE ILLUMINATION N EWS FROM ST. DAVID S EPISCOPAL CHURCH St. David s Episcopal Church 1015 Old Roswell Rd. Roswell, GA We Want You To Become An Episcopalian!...Calling 50 Adult Parishioners to Confirmation or Reception into The Episcopal Church. In the spring of 2007, the Rector s regular Sunday morning Sunday school class will be devoted to preparing adults for confirmation or reception into the Episcopal Church. A great many of our parishioners are not confirmed. This is the time to prepare for Confirmation. If you are in love with the Episcopal Church and want to join now is the time! If you have been at St. David s for a long time and still have not been confirmed this is the year! If you think the Episcopal Church needs to change, you need to be a member to have a voice. This is the year! In this class, the Rector will teach the history of the Episcopal Church and why Henry VIII did NOT create the Anglican Church. He will teach about the worship in some detail, with emphasis on The Book of Common Prayer, the Anglican approach to Holy Scripture, and the structure and workings of the Episcopal Church. There will be plenty of time for questions, answers, and good discussion. I am looking for 50 adult parishioners to make this important move. Classes begin in January. Look for more details to come soon. The Rev. P. S. Winton, Rector African Team Ministries Crafts and Jewelry return! The African crafts and jewelry returns to us again this fall! We hope you will join us. Please call Lisa Puckett, facilitator, at , or Betsy Candler at , ext. 118 if you have any questions. Calling all social butterflies! St. Martha s Guild evolves! Once upon a time, St. David s operated a St. Martha s Guild, a social committee, responsible for parishwide events such as Mardi Gras parties and summertime al fresco dinners. These gatherings provided an opportunity for the adults of the parish to enjoy food and fellowship, to get to know each other outside of worship and ministry involvement. We are interested in resurrecting St. Martha s Guild and are looking for folks who would like to help plan and produce roughly three, purely social, adult get-togethers per year. Anyone who enjoys cooking, decorating, entertaining, or socializing will be blessed by involvement on this committee. For more information and to volunteer to serve on the committee, please contact Betsy Candler at , ext. 118 (betsy@stdavidchurch.org). Christ Child s Closet Grand Opening on Sunday, Nov. 12! The Christ Child Closet (sponsored by St. David's Guild of the Christ Child) is a "shop" for needy families in and around St. David's church, for parents expecting a child or with a baby 0-12 months of age. Items that are donated from members of St. David's and beyond will include basically everything but clothes for a new baby. Those who attend will be able to "shop" for free. We plan on opening up the Christ Child's Closet once per quarter. The date of the first opening will be Sunday, November 12, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the House, the property that St. David's owns. The address is: 975 Old Roswell Rd., Roswell, GA -- just 2 doors down from the Church. If you have questions, or need additional information, please contact Lisa Puckett, facilitator, at Couples Night Out for October The next Couples Night Out, will be held on Friday night, October 20, and we will go to Benihana Restaurant on Mansell Rd. and Northpoint Pkwy. Childcare will be provided at the church, and the cost for this care will be $10 per child with a maximum of $20 per family. Childcare will open at 6:10 p.m., and we will meet at the restaurant at 6:30 p.m. Please call the church reservation number at , ext. 126, by Monday, Oct. 16, to reserve your spot and to inform us of your childcare needs. 4 THE STAINED GLASS WINDOWS 20 QUESTIONS! Twenty Questions About the Windows To answer the following questions, don t depend on just the previous articles about the stained glass windows that have been published in The Illumination. Many of the details mentioned in these questions were never even included in the articles, but were left for you to discover, as are countless other details yet to be discovered by both you and me. With Advent and Christmas coming in a few short months, the two windows associated with those seasons will be the final ones to be written about in this series. I hope that your enjoyment of my commentary on the windows has been equal to the pleasure I ve had in writing and sharing my thoughts with you. You ll have to spend time sitting in the nave (or looking at the framed water color reproductions around the building) and carefully inspecting the details of each window to arrive at many of the answers. This will probably require multiple sessions to answer all 20 questions, and these quiet moments will provide ample opportunity for you to offer thanks to Almighty God for the many gifts that the stained glass windows represent. Foremost of those gifts is His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. But also give thanks for the Holy Spirit, who inspired the artisans, as well as inspiring the generous donors of these magnificent works of religious art. Finally, prayerfully give thanks for the precious souls of the beloved people in whose memory these beautiful gifts were made. Bruce Thomas, Lead Verger 1. Many doves are shown in the windows, especially those windows symbolizing the Holy Spirit. Which window contains a raven? 2. What detail is common to the window for St. Martha and the central rose window above the altar? 3. Which window demonstrates the refraction principle of optical physics? 4. How does the nimbus behind Jesus head differ from other people s nimbi in the windows? 5. In which window is there a building with an impressively tall spire? 6. Can you find which window has striped window awnings in its detail? 7. There are two windows that contain curtain rods. Can you spot them both? 8. How many (and which) windows show flames? 9. Only one window shows the image of someone from the Old Testament. Which window is it, and can you identify both Old Testament persons depicted in it? 10. Can you spot a cattail in one of the windows? 11. Two different windows show the stone tablets representing the Ten Commandments. But what is peculiar about the writing on the stone tablets shown in one of those windows? 12. Can you spot an actual basketball in one of the windows? You can only see it from certain locations in the nave. 13. In which window can be found a number of gold coins? 14. How many windows display poisonous things? Crane your neck, and don t forget to include the round windows in your search! 15. John the Baptist is shown wearing a canteen at his waist. Can you find someone else s canteen in a different window? 16. Which window shows a man using a pair of crutches? 17. When St. Jerome, in the 4 th century, translated the Bible 4 October 4, 2006 from the original Hebrew and Greek into Latin, he misinterpreted a Hebrew word in the Book of Exodus that describes how Moses face shone ( rays of light ) after he came down from Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments. Jerome thought the Hebrew word meant horns instead! Since then, artists have delighted in representing Jerome s mistranslation by depicting Moses with horns. Is this tradition maintained in the windows of St. David s? 18. In the Baptism window, a flag flies from the staff held by John the Baptist. Find the other window that shows this same flag. What is the verse in the first chapter of the Gospel according to John that links these two displays of the Banner of Victory? 19. Jesus told his disciples, some of whom were fishermen, that he would make them fishers of men. Where is there a fish shown in the stained glass? 20. The artist who designed all these windows was trained in the symbolism and style of heraldry, which explains the use of the red escutcheon (shield) on which he drew the various scenes and symbols. The escutcheon is in turn displayed on a background of translucent blue and turquoise rectangles. Can you spot the window where the artisans who translated these designs into stained glass inserted a few panes of the background on top of the escutcheon instead? Don t forget to purchase the book, The Windows of St. David s. Call Linda Thomas in the church office at , ext. 104, or her at linda@stdavidchurch.org to purchase your book where all the articles are in one place with new photos and other extras!

5 ST. DAVID S OUTREACH Holiday Families Gift-Giving Every year St. David's pledges to support North Fulton Community Charities with their Holiday Families program. This helps our neighbors, who are less fortunate, have a nice Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday. St. David's agrees to help approximately 40 families each year. We provide a $40.00 gift certificate for groceries to each family at Thanksgiving and another at Christmas. We also provide gifts for the families. Each family member gets to request 3 items that they wish for Christmas. These items are put on a star, which is then attached to the family's angel poster in the Parish Hall. The Christmas gift angels will be up the Sunday before Thanksgiving. More information about these will be in future newsletters. Volunteers are needed to help staff the donation tables, prepare the Angel posters, set up posters, and prepare the gifts for delivery. Please call Jacquie Tracy at to volunteer or her at tracy4@bellsouth.net. The committee is also looking for someone to donate the use of a tractor/trailer in which the donated items will be stored and sorted. Plan now to join the Katrina Relief Mission Team The Katrina Relief Mission Team will be traveling to Long Beach, Mississippi, for a 4 th mission relief trip. We will again be staying at Camp Coast Care. We have reserved spaces for St. David s in the month of October. Please mark your calendars! We plan on arriving Thursday, October 26 th, and will be returning home on Sunday, October 29 th. What are the Accommodations? Each volunteer pays $20.00 per day to cover the cost of food. The Camp serves 3 meals a day. Sleeping accommodations are on cots and if you prefer to camp, there is space for tents. There is air conditioning and showers. We have lists of personal items and clothing you will need that will be disbursed once you make the decision to make the trip. What if I am not sure if this is something I could do? Please call Jan Georges to discuss any reservations you may have about going, OR if you have made the decision to go, please call so that a reservation can be made. The Camp is very busy in the Fall. 7 50TH ANNIVERSARY THANK-YOU S Hail Thee Festival...Weekend! The 50 th Anniversary Celebration weekend was glorious! As James said in the Epistle,...I will show you my faith by what I do. St. David s showed its faith in countless ways, from the very first meeting of the 50 th Planning committee, to the last sweep of the broom Sunday afternoon, and in the two Senior Teas to come. The building has changed and will change again, people come and go, but the one constant at St. David s is the joy with which we show our love for the Risen Lord and each other! So many people contributed their time, energy, creativity, dedication and just all around willingness to help. One of the most moving things to me was how many people, representing every part of our family, helped make this such a success! We had the youth all the way to our most senior members, new members and long time members, our Hispanic family members, just about every ministry, men and women all the people who make up this beautiful, vibrant parish. My heart is filled with love and pride to be a member of this parish. long time; Laura Dover and Leonard Ferrand for ensuring we were well fed Saturday and Sunday; George and Joanie Rhodes for the delicious cakes and pastries; Stacy Wilson for coordinating the gorgeous flowers; Doug Fallon for all his work and creativity on the inspiring DVD; Linda Thomas for the truly memorable Memory Book; Carole Ann Padgett and her group for compiling the fascinating history document and Rich McIntosh for pulling it together; Bruce and Linda Thomas for the beautiful Stained Glass Window book; the Folkmassters for the lively entertainment on Saturday at the cookout; Reggie Dill for the moving bagpipe accompaniment; the Staff for all their hard work; Ernest Plunkett and the choir for such beautiful music during the services; Beth King and Laura Dover for the two upcoming teas; Fr. Paul for his leadership and patience; and the countless others who were integral to the success. Thanks be to God for every one of you! Amanda Scott In particular I would like to thank the planning committee: Susan Watts, Linda Thomas, Carlyn Romeyn, Mike Copps, and Rev.
